FatherDavid D. Lentz b. 15 Aug 1815, d. bt 1871 - 1880
MotherMartha Sides b. 12 Aug 1815, d. bt 1881 - 1900
John D. Lentz was Marriage; Person Source.1 He He was a Confederate soldier, died at Elmira Prison, NY. Apparently never married. His records as a CSA soldier are all we know.
John D. LENTZ, b. 1840 by CW records, mustered in at Salisbury, 3 Mar 1862 for the war with a bounty of $50. Pvt, Co D, Gibbs Prison Guard, 42 Regt, NC Infantry. Listed on 30 Jun 1862 as 'absent sick.' He was present from Jul 1862 through Feb 1864. 31 Aug 1864 shows him 'missing in action since 3 Jun 1864. 11 Jun 1864 shows him captured at Coal Harbor (sic. Should be 'Cold Harbor'), VA on 3 Jun 1864, transferred to Elmira, NY, 12 Jul 1864. He was received at Elmira on 17 Jul 1864. On 30 Sep 1864, he requested to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and be allowed to go to Jonesboro, IL (a request which apparently was disallowed). (He must have known about his cousins living in Anna, very near to Jonesboro, IL, and probably wanted to join them. It also possible that he knew about B711- Jacob Lentz, who was released to his brother in Anna after he came down with a severe case of diarrhea. Jacob's brother nursed him back to health until he was able to work; many, such as D2113- John D. Lentz, were not so fortunuate.) John D. died in the POW prison 18 Feb 1865 with chronic diarrhea and was buried in grave no. 2264 in the Woodlaw Cem., at Elmira.
. (John Paul LENTZ, compiler of Lentz Heritage, without citing his sources, argues that Northern prisons were worse than Southern prisons since 12% of prisoners in northern prisons died, whereas only 8.3% of prisoners in southern prisons died. Apparently he got his basic figures, at least on northern prisons, from an article in the 'Confederate Veteran' magazine by Henry T. Williams, which showed that northern prisons held 170,136 Confederates and that 22,878 of these died in prison--which comes to 12.9%. Where he got his figures, and what they were, on southern prisons is unknown.
(1866 U.S. statistics showed that the North held 220,000 Confederates, 26,476 of whom died--12%--and that the South held 126, 000 Union troops, 22,576 of whom died--17.9%. In 1906, a Northern historian, John F. Rhodes, compiled records showing that the North held 215,000 Confederates, 26,436 of whom died--12%--and that the South held 194,000 Union troops, 22,570 of whom died--15.5%.
There will never be a way to prove which side's figures are more accurate. Generally speaking, Northern records were more complete and accurate than Southern records, but on this particular point this statement proves nothing either way. The hard fact is that most American families of that time, including ours, lost loved ones who fought on BOTH sides; BOTH sides were guilty of war crimes, and this is true of all wars. Whether one side or the other was moral or immoral and whether it was honestly led or dishonestly misled is unquestionable today. Whichever side they fought for, however, our ancestors were fighting for what they saw as their patriotic duty, and in that sense they were ALL heroes. The Civil War is history and a tragedy all Americans mourn. Let us pray that we are never so stupid as to repeat such a thing as the Civil War
Had the South won, chances are that the South, if not the entire United States, would be composed of many little countries like those in the Balkans, continually hating one another and continually fighting internecine wars throughout the rest of history. He was born on 2 April 1846 at Rowan County, North Carolina. He died in August 1846 at Rowan County, North Carolina; This date of death is an estimate based on Rev. Rothrock Diary. (See burial info.) He was buried on 15 August 1846 at Rowan County, North Carolina; Unknown GEDCOM info: 15 1900 Rev. Rothrock Diary states: 'Sat., Aug 15, 1846--Went to John Lentz's to attend to the funeral of Ambrose Lentz's child but was too indisposed to officiate.'
It cannot be said positively that this is the child referred to, but, based on all the info available, this seems most likely to be the one. It is interesting to notice, also, that the Sun, Nov. 15, 1846 entry states: 'Sun., Nov. 15, 1846--Preached Ambrose Lentz's funeral at St. Stephens Church from Job 14:14.' Is it possible that this was the same child? Perhaps the child was actually buried earlier than Nov 15 and the funeral was preached then.3
