Jacob Motsinger Sr1

M, b. 1761, d. 1851
Notes Jacob Motsinger Sr. was born in Heidelberg township,Northampton county, Pennsylvania 1761 and died Rowan county,North Carolina aged ninety years,1851.

He was one of the boy soldiers of "The Swamp Fox", Francis Marion. His father, Felix, furnished supplies, horses and spied on the Tories of the area. His mothers name is not verifed but it is assumed she was an Idol. As the records of the church were burned there is no way to prove or disprove the assumption. (The proof of Jacob's service is verified by the entry of Armond V. Motsinger, who at the time of his entry in SAR lived at Aberdeen, Maryland.) After the Rev. War he with his family resided in Wilson county, Tennessee for a short time. His first entry of land in Northwest Territory was made in 1811, now located Pierce township,Washington Co., Indiana.

MOTSINGER TRADITION

Note from Durward B. Allaman:
Mr. Hobert L. Motsinger of Creal Springs, IL wrote my great aunt Laura
(Knight) Motsinger, Sept 29, 1935. She resided at Canton IL at the
time. Here is some interesting history obtained from R.E. Metzinger
of Metzinger, NE:

"The name Metzinger in German means 'Butcher'. This originated from
the name Metzger. Therefore it is supposed that every person with our
name is related, although there seems to be Metzingers that we know
nothing about. R.E. Metainger's grandfather came from the town of
Metz in Lorraine France. As you know, this country has belonged to
Germany, but now belongs to France, however we are thought to be of
Swiss-German descent. In regard to the name Metzger, They had in
Germany a rich relative who died interstate, leaving immense property
and wealth. One of the brothers was granted with the power of
attorney and went to settle the estate. He sold the land and other
property, got all the money, dug out and went to Holland to live, so
his brothers would not find him. He added the "IN" in his name making
the name Metzinger.

About 30 years ago R.E. Metzinger's uncle saw an item in a Chicago
newspaper, regarding an unclaimed fortune left by an deceased
millionaire.

He at once got his brothers interested and they hired lawyers to
investigate. They found the money to be there (several millions of
dollars) and they were also the legal heirs. According to the laws of
Holland any monies which laid unclaimed over fifty years reverted to
the government to be used for the relief of widows and orphans. Such
was the end of ill-gotten wealth.

When the Metzingers went to the Carolinas some changed their name to
Motsinger and practically all go by that name, however some kept the
original.

-- H.E. Motsinger

Michael Motsinger, named in land transfer as son of Jacob and Hannah Motsinger, deeded that same land in 1835 to Dempsey Trowbridge. His wife signed, Barbary.
Book H, page 561.

In the settlement of the estate of Richard Gilstrap, Barbara Motsinger is named as an heir; showing her to be the daughter of Richard Gilstrap.

Barbara Motsinger married Thomas Wilson, Jan. 11, 1816, Washington Co.,Indiana. Thomas Wilson was a son of Elder John Wilson and his wife Sarah Skeen. They lived at least part of their life in Polk township, on the farm later occupied by Samuel Wilson, his grandson. Their children were:
1-John Wilson who married Christina Rickard, daughter of George. The red brick house in which they lived fro many years still stands on the road just north of where his father, Thomas Wilson lived.
2-Joseph Wilson who married Catherine Ardry and moved to Scott County, where he was the father of all the Scott Co. Wilsons. In 1837 he entered two tracts of land in Wash. Co., Ind. They were NW 1/2 NW 1/4 Sec-5 iN 6E,and NW~i4 Sec 6 iN 6E. These he sold to his mother ar an early date.
3-Hannan Wilsom who married James Hartley. They had several children, among them
Ben and Marion Hartley. They lived in Franklin township, Washington county, Ind.
4-Catherine Wilson who married Solomon Lockenour. They lived in Pierce township. Both Thomas and Barbara Wilson are buried in the Wilson-Meade cemetary, Polk Twp. near their old home. Charles P. Motsinger born 1853 told at the Washington county Historical meeting July 25,1942: "My father was Daniel Motsinger, my grandfather was Jacob Motsinger. My great grandfather was also Jacob Motsinger. My grandfather was in the War of 1812, then came to Indiana. My great grandfather was in the Revolutionary War. He never came to Indiana. He came from Germany. My grandfather settled in Pierce Township.
