# Note:

The information I have on John R. Allcorn, comes from copy's of his Civil War records. His place of birth is listed in two places, each showing a different place of birth. Randolph Co., Arkansas, and Jackson Co., Ak. Randolph Co. is on the Company B. 14th. Reg't Company Muster-in and Descriptive Roll, At Benton Barracks, Mo. dated, March 20, 1865. Another is listed on the Declaration for Pension, dated, Feb. 6, 1907.

His discharge shows that he enrolled as a private and Co. B. 14th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry on Oct. 14, 1864. In the records that I have obtained, showing his military history, and applications for a pension, there is a form from the Adjutant General's Office, Washington D.C., dated July 16, 1873, pension number 184570, list him on the roles as enlisted on April 15, 1864 at Patterson, Wayne County, Missouri, in the third Regiment, Mo, S.M.( Missouri State Militia) Cavalry. He was mustered in as a private on May 9, 1864 at Pilot Knob Missouri. Assigned to Co. L. 3rd. Regiment, Mo. S.M. Cavalry as a private. He was later transferred to the 14th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry. It was from this Regiment he was discharged. He was 6' 1 1/2" inches tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. The records show that he was born sometime in the year of 1828, in Jackson County, Arkansas. This birth place is listed on the Declaration for Pension, dated, Feb. 6, 1907. Throughout all the records I have, his last name is either spelled, Allcorn, or Alcorn. In the paperwork that I have where he signed his name, he signed it, John R. Allcorn, two L's.

On, or about July 15, 1864 in an engagement with the enemy near Elkchute, Missouri, (See history of the 3rd. Regiment, Mo. State Militia) the day being very hot, he became overheated, causing sunstroke and bleeding from the ears, and temporary deafness. He was treated at different hospitals and released. He was further injured when thrown from his horse, in an engagement with the enemy, and other "bush-wacker's" near pilot Knob Missouri, on, or about October 10, 1864. (see history, 3rd. Regiment, Mo. S.M.) He landed on his back causing injury to his back and spine. Treated in different hospitals. Then, on Dec. 5, 1864 he was transferred to Co. B. 14th Missouri Cavalry. On Co. B.'s roles for March and April 1865, he was reported Present, sick. He was discharged May 11, 1865. It was from Co. B. of the 14th Missouri Cavalry, that he was discharge.

The following is information I received from a civil war historian. Kirby Ross.

Subject: 3 MSM Cav.
"It is my educated belief that the action that resulted in your ancestor suffering from sunstroke involved a scout that took place from 18 July '64 through 6 August '64. On 18 July Major James Wilson left Pilot Knob, Missouri, with 200 men and two howitzers belonging to the 3rd MSM Cavalry. Proceeding to Bloomfield, the command joined forces with a detachments of the 2nd MSM Cavalry, the 1st Mo. Cav. Vol., and 6th Mo. Cav. Vol., all under the overall command of Lt. Col. John T. Burris of the 10th Kansas Infantry. All told 500 Federal troops were involved in what developed into one of the largest and longest scouts in that area during the war and ultimately engaged Confederate regulars (Confederate 2nd Missouri Cav) and guerrillas (under the command of Dick Cowan, Sam Hildebrand and Nathan Bolin) in Mississippi, Stoddard, New Madrid, Pemiscot and Dunklin Counties in Missouri, and Greene and Mississippi Counties in Arkansas.

The task force proceeded down into the booheel area of Missouri, and on into Arkansas. On 4 August, the Feds engaged Confederate forces at Elkchute and Company L of the 3rd MSM was definately involved in this action. They started the morning by raiding Scatterville, Ark. which was headquarters for the guerrillas. The Feds cleared out the village and then burned it to the ground. They spent the day chasing guerrillas through the brush, which turned out to be quite a turkey shoot. Col. Burris later reported killing 30 Rebs, wounding another 30-40, and taking 28 prisoners that day. This was the most active day of the campaign as the overall mission resulted in 50 Rebs killed and 57 prisoners taken. To give you a better idea of the turkey shoot of 4 August around Elkchute, the Feds lost only one man killed and two slightly wounded. The one Fed killed was Captain Evan Francis of Company L, 3rd MSM. It would be my guess that your ancestor suffered his sunstroke by the aggressive chase that took place that day.

The event in which your ancestor hurt his back was probably a skirmish at Ponder's Mill on 3 October '64 between Doniphan and Poplar Bluff. I have not been able to find any action reports of this event."

After his discharge, he must have lived in, or near Greenville, Wayne Co. Mo. Records show his address there until sometime before August, 1876. From August 1876 on, he lived in Boone Co. Arkansas.

On December 3, 1890 John Allcorn was examined by a physician to show cause for an increase of his pension. He indicated that he had pain in his limbs, a discharge from his left ear about once a month, and can't perform hard labor. His pulse was 80, temperature 98, height 6' 1", and his weight, 170 pounds. He was 62 years old.

In a declaration for pension, dated April 6, 1907 he gave his residence as, Lowery, Boone County, Arkansas. His pension, starting May 12, 1865, to Dec.7, 1882 was $4.00 a mouth. From Dec. 8, 1882, to Dec. 2, 1890, was $8.00 a mouth. From Dec. 3, 1890 to Jan. 28, 1908, was $17.00 a mouth. From then to his death on November 20, 1910, his pension was $20.00 a mouth.

In the 60 pages of documents I have, his certificate No. for pension up to about the year to 1907 is, 184570. From then to his death, the certificate No. is, 521363. Why the difference?, It could have been because he was in two different regiments.

John ended his military service in captain Ewing's Company B, 14th Regiment, Missouri Calvery. He was discharged May 24, 1865 at Benton Barracks Saint Louis Missouri,
