Philbert Wright Sr.1

M, b. circa 1690, d. say 1737
Philbert Wright Sr. was research possibilities are Parents of RICHARD WRIGHT, SR. I am trying to find documentation on the parents of Richard Wright, Sr. (b 1730). Any additional information would be appreciated.

1. "JP Dick" by V. Stewart-Novak says that he was the second son of Daniel Wright (b 1674) of Glastonbury, CT and Eleanor Benton (b 1674) who, shortly after marriage, moved to Virginia, then to North Carolina and then settled in Rowan Co., North Carolina. Richard was one of 9 brothers. On the other hand, Curtis Wright states that Daniel Wright had only one daughter, Ruth and stayed in Connecticut. This also seems unlikely since Richard's parents would have been 56 years old at his birth.

"Inscriptions From Old Wethersfield" published in 1899 ( LDS film 0908332), page 319 "Here lies interr'd the Body of Mr. Daniel Wright who died June the 8th 1764 age 90 years." "Here Lyes the Body of Mrs. Ellen Wright, Wife of Mr. Daniel Wright, who Died Sept'r 27th 1749, in ye 79th year of Her age."

2. Grant Wright of Salem, Indiana states that "Tradition has it that Richard Wright, Sr. was born in England, emigrated to Wales, came back to England, an he, with four brothers immigrated to America probably sometime about 1746. They came to the Eastern shores of Maryland. Here they separated. Two went into New England, one to NY and Richard and one brother came into VA and then to Randolph Co., NC where he spent the remainder of his life".

3. "Major Francis Wright and Ann Washington, with Allied Families" by Ann Reed Ritchie 1973 and "Memorial Record of Rowan County" states that Richard Wright is descended from Captain William Wright of Westmoreland Co., Virginia and two generations back from Major Francis Wright and Ann Washington.

4. The “Wright Family History Volume I, Genealogy of Benjamin Wright, Sr. who was the son of Richard Wright, Sr.” by Knouf 1949 states: “Oliver P. Wright’s son, Ora Lee wright, told me that his father had done some research on the Wright family and was probably responsible for the account of Larkin Wright in this history, which was published while Oliver P was still living. It is interesting to note that it gives the father of Larkin as, Benjamin j. Wright, born in Rowan Co., North Carolina in 1752, the son of Richard Wright who came to America during the colonial epoch in the history of this country.”

5. "The Composite History Of Jackson County, Indiana 1816-1991 Dodrasquicentennial Edition" (Preston and Wylda Wright) The records for the history of the Preston and Wylda Wright family may be traced to Saxon the Vikings, settling in Normandy (Bayeaux, France) approx 400 AD. Later founders of Kingdoms in Essex, Sussex and Wessex (England). Two Wright's (originally Wryde or Wryta) were knighted. William (Capt. of the body guard of Wm. the Conqueror) and Richard. The U.S. Census of 1790 showed the name as Right, Write, Reyt and Wright. I. Sir William Wright (born early 1700's); First Wright in America; settled in Rowan Co. North Carolina. II. Richard (1730-1785). Children: Benjamin, Peter, Richard Jr., John, William, Evans, Amos and Philbert.

6. "Pioneer Preachers of Indiana" by Madison Evans 1862 says the Wrights came from England.

7. "History of Greene County, Iowa" 1887 says that Richard Wright's (Sr.) grandson was of scotch-Irish descent.

8. "Baltimore Co. Families", 1659-1759, by Robert W. Barnes:

WRIGHT, PHILBURD, had two sons, both of whom went to North Carolina where they served in the Rev. War; PHILBURD, Jr. moved to Orange Co., NC; RICHARD, d. c. 1786 in Rowan Co., NC. Ref: Waters, Margaret R. Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Indiana. 2 vols. in 1 (1949, 1954) Repr. Baltimore: 1970.

9. Some people believe that Daniel Wright and Eunice Loomis of Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut are the parents.

The most authoritative document i have found of their children "Loomis Families in America" gives a whole different set of children than the pedigree charts that are used as sources.2 "Baltimore Co. Families", 1659-1759, by Robert W. Barnes: WRIGHT, PHILBURD, had two sons, both of whom went to North Carolina where they served in the Rev. War; PHILBURD, Jr. moved to Orange Co., NC; RICHARD, d. c. 1786 in Rowan Co., NC. Ref: Waters, Margaret R. Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Indiana. 2 vols. in 1 (1949, 1954) Repr. Baltimore: 1970.
Another entry in the same reference, which is interesting: WRIGHT, Richard, d. by 2 April 1664, leaving a widow Ann who m. as her 2nd husband, sometime before 16 July 1664 David Fox. Ref: Archives of Maryland, vol 1- Baltimore: 1883.1 Philbert Wright Sr. was also known as Philburd Wright.1 He was born circa 1690 at England; No information on Philbert has been found prior to 1709. Dae of birth MAY not be correct. Philbert may have been somewhat older than Esther, thereby preceeding her in death before 1738
The first record of Philbert Wright is 16 May 1709 when he is mentioned in the estate of Matthew Mockbe.1,3 He married Esther Becraft, daughter of Peter Becraft and Rebecka Cansfield, on 3 December 1712 at Queen Anne Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland.4 Philbert Wright Sr. died say 1737 at Anne Arundel County, Maryland; Information is speculative, since no death date has been found; however certainly before June 1738. AGE is also speculative since no information has been found about when he was born OR where. He may be considerably older.3

John Beard was born in Randolph County, N. C., Aug. 2, 1780, of Irish ancestry, and his wife was born in Hagerstown, Md., of English descent, and when young moved with her parents to Randolph County, N.C., where she married Mr. Beard. They came to Wayne County, Ind., in the fall of 1805, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Mr. Beard died in February, 1859, and his widow in October, 1860. They were the parents of nine children - Sallie; Jane, born Dec. 9, 1805, was the first white child born in Boston Township and the first person buried in the county; Isaac Noble, Martha, Eli, Philbert, Mary W., Melinda K., and one who died in infancy.
John Beard was one of the first Grand Jury of Wayne County. He was a preacher in the New Light church.
[From "History of Wayne County, Indiana" Vol. II, Inter-State Publishing Co., Chicago, 1884, p. 499.]

Note: Andrew W. Young's," History of Wayne County, Indiana", (Robert Clarke & Co., Cincinnati. 1872), adds that John Beard came to Wayne County after spending one year in Tenn. JOHN BEARD, JR.
Born August 2, 1780, Randolph County, North Carolina, "of Irish descent."
Married Mary Wright (born Hagerstown MD, according to sketch of Isaac N.)
"in Carolina, in 1803; removed with two children to Tennessee, and thence , a
year after, in 1806, to a few miles below Hunt's settlement, now in Union
County, and in October, 1811 to the present township of Harrison, cutting his
road a part of the way through the wilderness, and driving his team with his
family and household goods, and a cow and a calf, without assistance"....
" moved from NC to Tennessee where he stayed for about a year, then briefly
to ____OH, then to Wayne County, Indiana in (fall of 1805, sketch of Isaac).
(to Union Co., near Hunt's Settlement, then to Wayne Co. in Oct. 1811, sketch
of John.)

Springfield MM, NC records (Hinshaw) show John Beard, Jr. "con his
MOU" 10,6, 1804 (meaning he admitted and apologized that he had married at a
non-Quaker ceremony) and gct. West Branch MM, Ohio 3, 5, 1808. The Beard's
daughter Jane was the first white child born in Wayne Co. John was on the
first Grand Jury in Wayne Co. He became a was a member of the Christian
Society at Jacksonburgh and one of their preachers; he later became a
"Universalist". (Universalists were a Hicksite Quaker sect -a "Universalist
Controversy" occurred ca. 1827-28.) An alternative Hicksite meeting was
formed in Wayne County, IN. John died February 13,1859; buried with Masonic
ceremonies by Milton Lodge on Feb. 15. Mary died October 16, 1860;
photographs of both of them and of their son Isaac Noble Beard are reproduced
in the 1884 History of Wayne County. John's will, made September 16, 1856,
probated March 1859, leaves $800 in trust for daughter Melinda K. Justice.
with provisions to keep it out of the hands of he husband Henry C. Justice.
Isaac N. Beard, executor; witnesses John S. Newman, Jesse P. Siddall. "His
farm, on which resided the remainder of his life, is now owned by his son,
Isaac N. Beard, who lives about a mile northeast from the old homestead"

(History of Wayne Co., 1884).
John Beard, Jr. was on the list of debts due to John Allen & Co. store ca.
1819 (the store was founded ca. 1803; John married 1803 and left the county
circa 1805.) The Allen store accounts also mention an otherwise unaccounted
for Michael Beard.2 John and Mary Wright Beard
John Beard, Jr. was one of the earliest settlers in Wayne County, Indiana, and according to cemetery records of the Beard Cemetery in Economy, Indiana, his tombstone states he came to Indiana in 1806. This is born out by Andrew Young's 1872 Wayne County Indiana History which states he came first to Union County, Indiana, and then five years later in October 1811 moved to Wayne County. The History errs a little as Union County was part of Wayne County until it was set off in 1821 but at least it lets us know the areas where he lived. He married Mary Wright in Randolph County, North Carolina, and was dismissed from Springfield MM on 5/3/1806 for his marriage out of unity. Their marriage may have taken place as early as 1803. John & Mary must have made their peace with the Quakers as their move to Indiana was formalized by a certificate to West Branch Monthly Meeting in Ohio on 3/5/1808. There were at that time no meetings in Indiana to receive the certificate. John & Mary were parents of Isaac Noble Beard whose descendants are chronicled in the Beard Bible. John & Mary also had a daughter Jane who died on 1/3/1808, age 2yrs 4mo 26dy. She was the first burial in Elkhorn Cemetery located south of Richmond in Wayne County, Indiana. Elkhorn Cemetery is the oldest organized cemetery in the county. (Yount, Tombstone Inscriptions) Additional children of John and Mary were Mary W. Beard who married Jacob Sinks 12/22/1836 in Wayne County; and Melinda K. Beard who married Henry C. Justice 3/22/1844 in Wayne County. John died 2/13/1859 and Mary died 10/16/1860 in Jackson Township, Wayne County, Indiana. We will be adding a page for John and Mary. There are portraits of John and Mary and of Isaac Noble Beard in the History of Wayne County, Indiana, 1872 (portrait of John W. from the History. A reprint of the history is available from The Bookmark, Knightstown, Indiana).3 John Beard was born in North Carolina, August 2, 1780. His parents emigrated from Londonderry Ireland and settled in North Carolina in 1770. He married Mary Wright in Carolina in 1803; removed with two children to Tennessee, and thence, a year after, in 1806, to a few miles below Hunt's settlement, now in Union County, and in October 1811, to the present township of Harrison, cutting his road a part of the way through the wilderness, and driving his team with his family and household goods, and a cow and a calf, without assistance. He had a full measure of the experience of pioneer life. He is represented as having been an honest, industrious, and estimable citizen. He was for a time a member of the Christian society at Jacksonborough, and one of their preachers; and at a later period embraced the Universalist faith. He is spoken of by one who knew him well a a "patriot, and a true lover of his country, at all times manifesting a deep interest in the prosperity of the United States, and the perpetuitiy of our free institutions;and in that faithful dischage of his duties as a husband, a parent, and a neighbor, "he left behind him an example worthy to be followed." He died Feb 13 1859, in his 79h year. Being a member of Hall of Milton Lodge of Free Masons, he was buried with the usual Masonic ceremonies on the 15th. His wife survived him less than two years. She died at Milton, Oct 16 1860, in her 81st year. She proved a valuable helpmeet to her husband amidstg the hardships and privations of pioneer life, and possessed in a high degree those qualitities which adorn the female character, and which fitted her so well for the discharge of her social and domestic duties. The children of John Beard were: 1, Sarah, wife of Robert Willits, who died in Iowa.2 Isaac N [Sk] 3. Mary W, wife of Jacob Sinks, deceased; resides with her daugher, wife of Kilby Ferguson, Indianapolis. 4. Malinda K w3ife of H C Justice, who went to the far west some thirteen years ago, and is supposed to be dead. She resides with her brother, Isaac N, in Harrison.4 John Beard was born on 2 August 1780 at Randolph County, North Carolina.1 He married Mary Wright, daughter of Philburd Wright and Elizabeth Reagan, in 1803 at Randolph County, North Carolina; or married 1803 Wayne County Indiana.1 John was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census at Wayne County, Indiana. John Baird [sic] 1 male 10-16 (Isaac Noble); 1 male 26-45 (John) ; 1 female 10-16 (Sarah) ; 1 female 16-26; 1 female 26-45; 2 engaged in agriculture.5 John was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at Milton Washington Township, Wayne County, Indiana. 25 26 John Beard 69 male farmer 6000 NC; Mary 70 female NC; Mary W.
