Peter Lence B44- Peter Lentz was born on 27 Jan 1801, sponsored at baptism on 15 Mar 1801 by B2- Peter Lentz, uncle, according to Organ Church Baptismal Records. (His birth also shows elsewhere as 21 Jan.) He married on 12 Aug 1825 in Union Co., IL, to Mary 'Polly' Lingle. Mary Lingle was a daughter of Anthony & Margaret (Cauble) Lingle. Peter and Mary had 7 children.

'LANCE, Peter, Pvt., served in Capt. B. B. Craig's Co. of Mounted Volunteers in the Illinois Militia in the Black Hawk War.'

We have a special puzzle in that there was a B443- Caleb Lentz who was inadvertently omitted from the listing of this family in Lentz Heritage, Chap IV, pp. 62-63. This would lead to a possible future problem in the numbering of descendents. However, his sister Sarah who was born immediately after him, luckily for us never married and so had no descendents. I am, therefore, using the number B443- for both Caleb and Sarah. Caleb's descendents will continue on from him as B443-.

Peter served in the Black Hawk Indian War of 1832, probably in the IL Militia, and settled in Dongola Township, Union Co., IL.
The following, about this war, is from Compton's Encyclopedia: 'The name of this war comes from Black Hawk (1767-1838), the American Indian chief of the Sauk tribe. Black Hawk was the leader of the last war against white settlers in the Northwest Territory. He had a band of about 1,000 followers, many of whom were women, old men, and children.
'Black Hawk was born in a Sauk village near the mouth of the Rock River in IL. In the War of 1812 he was recruited by the British to fight against the U.S. government. The Indians' grievances increased after the war as settlers continued to take over their fields and homes.
'In 1804 several members of the Sauk and Fox tribes had signed a treaty ceding all their lands east of the Mississippi River to the U.S. Under Chief Keokuk, some of the Indians moved across the river to Iowa, but Black Hawk claimed the treaty was not valid. Forced to move in 1831, Black Hawk led his warriors and their families back into IL the following spring. American troop, aided by the IL militia, set out after them, and fighting soon broke out. Other tribes failed to help Black Hawk's band, and it was crushed in August.
'Black Hawk was imprisoned for a time and then was taken East, where he met Pres. Andrew Jackson. Later he was allowed to return to Iowa. His autobiography, dictated to a government interpreter, is an American classic. He died in Iowa in 1838.' Unrecognized GEDCOM data: Unknown GEDCOM tag: _UID 34FE55D885FBDC47B2170BC11A8DD551641E.
