Unrecognized GEDCOM data: Unknown GEDCOM tag: _UID D69EA39675F57848AF865CC7056F9989C5AE. Jacob Lentz It will be noticed that I show several of Jacob's sublings with the surname LENTZ/LANCE. I do not show Jacob with the LANCE surname at all, because he stayed in NC after his father, B71- Charles LENTZ moved his family to Murray Co., GA, in about 1847 and at some point after that, changed the surname from LENTZ to LANCE. There is no evidence that he ever changed his name to LANCE.

(Edited from LENTZ HERITAGE entries, Chap IV, p. 64.)
B711- Jacob LENTZ was born 26 Mar 1827, according to Organ Church records, and died 23 Jun 1919, buried in Stony Point, Alexander Co., NC. His second wife and mother are buried there as well.
His first wife was D423- Catherine LENTZ, b. 23 Aug 1826, d. 31 Jul 1861, a daughter of D42- Henry LENTZ of Statesville, NC. They were married on 17 Jul 1850 and were third cousins. They had three sons, Max, Milan, and Bobb. Catherine's tombstone shows her as 'Wife of Jacob LENTZ, Jr.' Since B711- Jacob LENTZ was living near his grandfather, B7- Jacob LENTZ, he was often recorded as Jacob LENTZ, Jr., to keep them separated in the books
His second wife was Louisa Jane Alvira LUTZ, b. 10 Jan 1835, d. 27 Jan 1903, daughter of Jacob and Harriet R. Mehaffy LUTZ, of Catawba Co., NC. They were married on 23 Oct 1862. They had five children, two sons and three daughters.
Jacob and his uncle, B78- Adam LENTZ, married sisters and operated water-powered circular saw mills in Catawba Co., where Jacob's first wife Catherine died. Their mills supplied timber for the railroads. Adam had the first circular saw mill in Catawba Co., and Jacob had the first one in Alexander Co., NC, where he converted an old water sawmill to a new one during the first part of the Civil War. He moved his family and an orphan girl, Jamima Lusk, to this mill and log house near Stony Point, NC, in late Oct 1862.
He was usually of Stony Point, NC, but he returned from Cherokee Co. to Iredell Co. in 1847 to help take care of his grandfather.

Military Service

Jacob was conscripted on 2 Nov 1863 as a private in Co. A, 29th Regiment, NC Infantry, from Alexander Co., NC. One of his muster rolls describes him as 'light complexion, dark hair, black eyes, 6 ft. 2 inches tall. He was paroled as a 'Mill Wright' several times, and the family always said 'he was not in very long.'
He was captured at Chattahoochee, GA, on 4 Jul 1864 with 100 men who were left to protect the bridge while the army retreated over the river; they were trying to defend Atlanta. He was sent to the POW prison in Camp Douglas, IL.
In IL, he came down with the dreaded diarrhea that killed so many in Civil War prisons. He got word to his brother Jesse E. LENTZ in Anna, IL, who was instrumental in getting Jacob released to him, and Jesse took him to Anna where he 'nursed him back to health until he was able to work,' according to the story passed down to John Paul LENTZ and others. One of Jacob's and Louisa's daughters, Addie Jarrett LENTZ, was b. 24 Jan 1864 while he was in prison, where he made a ring for the new infant.
On 14 Apr 1865, Gen. Stoneman's Cavalry raided from Statesville to Taylorsville. The orphan girl was at the house with 9-year-old Bobb, Jacob's son by his first wife Catherine, and the baby Addie Jarrett. A neighbor sent a little Negro boy to warn them that the 'Yankees are coming.' She took the deeds and everything of value, including a lot of Confederate money, and buried them in a manure pile at the barn. The Union troops searched the house but took nothing. Jacob's second wife, Jane, and the two oldest boys were up on the ridge with their only horse plowing and planting. The soldiers unhitched her horse and were about to take it away, but an officer made them hitch it back up, saying, 'She needs it worse than you do.'
He shows on page 423, Roster of Confederate Soldiers as: 'LENTZ, Jacob, NC 29TH Inf, Co. A.'

Post-Civil War

At home again at Stony Point, NC, by Sep 1865, he walked to Statesville and laid brick for 50 cents a day to get his mill in operation and was hauling lumber in a wagon with a horse and an ox to Statesville, with son Dobb, age 11 or 12, driving. He often went to Statesville one day and returned the next.
While working in Statesville, Jacob met and invited a young boy named Joseph Franklin Gibson to spend the weekend at Jacob's home. While there, Joseph fell in love with the orphan girl, and they married on 18 Jan 1870. Their daughters, Annie and Jennie, are in several Lentz family pictures.
In 1871 Jacob built a new house, sawing the logs in the old house for the flooring and ceiling. The house still stands (at least it did as of the time LENTZ HERITAGE was written in 1986).
When Jacob celebrated his 90th birthday on 26 Mar 1917, the newspaper account said that he and his brother J. K. P. LENTZ were the only members of the family still living. They had not received word that J. K. P. LENTZ had died in Washington State on 21 Feb 1971.
He is quoted in newspaper accounts of his birthday celebrations as being the oldest of 12 children, 9 boys and 3 girls, and his father before him was the oldest member of his family.
(From Chap IV, Bastian Section, addendum, p. 20:) Railroads were built through Cherokee Co., NC in 1884, and B711- Jacob Lentz and brother Jesse visited brother Peter Lentz there after 1884. Account of this child have not been found. He probably originated in the Watts research records, but no documentation has been received.
In the Organ Church Baptismal Records there is a baby listed as born on 12 Oct 1796, but this is shown as Bastian (Lentz), baptized on 12 Nov 1796, parent Dewald Lentz, sponsor John Luckenbille.
No Dewalt Lentz (or similar spelling) shows in his age bracket on the 1820, 1830, or 1840 censuses of Rowan Co. We found no records.1 Henry, Abraham and Dewalt was probably a free white male, under 10 years old, in Bastian Lentz's household on the 1800 Census at Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina; Bortian Lence Jr. 1 male 26-44; 1 female 26-44 (this is Sebastian Levi Lentz). There is also a "Bostian Lence" near Devott [sic] and Michael Lence. "This" Bostian has 3 males 0-9, 1 male 26-44; 1 female 0-9, and 1 female 26-44. 3 males 0-9 could be Henry (8), Abraham (6), and Dewalt (4). The 1 female could be Caty (9.)3 Dewalt Lentz and Bastian Lence B15- Dewalt Lentz, b. 12 Oct 1796, from Van Poole records as reported by others. Account of this child have not been found.
