John Dillow was a witness From Konrad Dillow: We know nothing more about her than is stated in MHD's will in 1797. 'A daughter Hannah Dillow is also identified in Michael Hartman's will, as being unmarried. Since she was unmarried in 1797 it has long been assumed that Hannah was the youngest of the children of Michael Hartman and Anna Margareth. The writer is of the opinion that Hannah may have been one of their earliest children, and perhaps the mother of the base born child John Dillow, born in about 1784, who was a part of Michael Hartman's household in the 1790 census, and who was bound to William Embler on 10 May 1797, the day after Michael Hartman wrote his last will and testament.' , p. lii with Hannah Dillow.2 John Dillow was born circa 1784 at North Carolina.1 He Rowan County Apprenticeship and Guardianship Cases, 10 Nov 1797, 'John Dillo, a base born child, bound to William Embler to learn the cooper's trade the boy being 13 years and two months old till he attains the age of twenty one years the master to comply with the Act of Assembly.' 'The 1790 census records show one male, under 16, in the Michael Hartman's household. While John has not been identified, it seems likely that he, born in September of 1784, was probably a grandson of Michael Hartman, the son of one of his daughters. William Embler was a plantation owner with an extensive coverage.' , p. xxvi.2,1 He died between 1798 and 1874 at North Carolina.3

Thomas Chavis1

M, b. 1813, d. circa 1856
Thomas Chavis was born in 1813 at North Carolina.1 He married Dicey ? circa 1829 at Tennessee.1 Thomas Chavis and Christina Barringer Thomas was married and had a number of children by his wife. Thomas was a neighbor of Christina and Michael. This was evidently an 'affair' without marriage or living together. Ewen was raised in his mother's household. Jacob Tripp, who complained to the Pension Board about a pension being given to Michael Dillow, wrote in 1901, 'I remember passing Michael Dillow's house one time before the Civil War and seeing his wife's negro son Sandy there. It made an impression on my mind as that was about the first time I had ever seen a negro. Michael Dillow did not seem to care anythign about his wife Christena giving birth to a couple of negro sons. Thre was an old free negro named Cain and generally called 'Old Negro Cain' who was said to have been the father of Sandy Dillow. The other negro was named Ewen. I believe an old negro named Shavus was said to be his father. Ewen wasn't so dark as Sandy, who is black, but anybody could see that Ewen was part Negro. Ewen died four or five years ago, but Sandy Dillow still lives at Pullman, IL and works in the Pullman shops. The reason the white sons all left home so young was that they were ashamed of their negro brothers.' Darrel Dexter, A House Divided: Union County, IL, 1818-1865, p. 71. circa 1847.2 Thomas Chavis married Christina Barringer, daughter of Peter Barringer and Mary Dillow, say 1848 at Union County, Illinois; probably not a proper marriage 0 see note.3 As of 1850, Thomas Chavis was also known as Thomas Chavous.4 Thomas was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census at West Part of District No 2, Union County, Illinois. 419 409 Thomas Chavous 37 male mulatto farmer NC; Disa 38 female mulatto TN cannot read write; John 20 male mulatto farmer TN cannot read write; Noel 16 male mulatto farmer TN; William 15 male mulatto farmer TN; Manda 12 female mulatto TN; Malinda 10 female mulatto TN; Robert 8 male mulatto TN; Nathan 4 male mulatto IL.4 He died circa 1856 at Illinois; inference based on a charge against him of playing cards was dropped between April and Oct 1856.1
