Johann Jacob Meisenheimer1

M, b. circa 1679, d. 12 February 1733
FatherGottfried Meisenheimer2 b. 1644, d. 1735
Johann Jacob Meisenheimer was born circa 1679 at Waldalgesheim, Mainz-Bingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.3,1 He married an unknown person in 1718 at Waldalgesheim, Mainz-Bingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.1 He is included in the biography of Johann Jakob Misenheimer and Anna Margaretha Ritter; JOHANN JACOB MEISENHEIMER moved his family from Berks County, PA, in the summer of 1775 after the first British military action of the American Revolution to a part of Mecklenburg County that is now Cabarrus County, NC. He was born in Germany and is the pioneer ancestor of the family that settled in wester North Carolina. Recently discovered Lutheran Church records from Germany reveal that there was a Johann Jacob Meisenheimer with a recorded birth of 15 August 1718 in the town of Waldalgesheim, and that he was the son of JOHANN JACOB MEISENHEIMER and ANNA ELIZABETHA MOG. This is the only lead uncovered as to the parentage of our pioneer ancestor. Waldalgesheim is in the same Pfalz-Rheinland region as the city named Meisenheim on the Glan, a tributary of the Rhine River in west Germany. The city Meisenheim is over one thousand years old, and is likely the source place name of our surname. It is common in Germany for a person [usually the aristocracy] to have a surname that began with the word "Von" which means "from". Like Johann "Von" Meisenheim and most likely it later changed to Meisenheimer, the German spelling found here. In America, the English changed it by dropping the first "E" as they could not pronounce it right–Misenheimer. It is important to keep in mind that the old world was the only Life Johann Jacob knew, and there were stories that would be told of the Roman Empire conquest. Today, if we were to visit Germany, there would be homes, churches and buildings still being used that Johann Jacob would have seen.

The exact reason for Johan Jacob Meisenheimer to come to the new world may never be known, but a number of factors, such as religious wars (i.e., various rulers forcing their religion on people) during the late 1600s and early 1700s did devastate the Pfalz-Rheinland region; the results of these wars were lack of food, death, burning, plundering, and high children mortality rates. Many parents, in the Pfalz-Rheinland region wanted their adult children to have a better life, and would help them go to the new world for that opportunity. This may have been the case of our pioneer ancestor considering that he married shortly after his arrival in America which only a free man could do. An indentured servant could not marry without the permission of the indenture holder.

Johann Jacob made his way down the Rhine River to the port city of Rotterdam to book passage for the new world. He sailed from Rotterdam to the island of Cowes off England, then across the ocean to America on the ship Lydia. In the English Captain's ship records, his age was entered as 23 years old. The ship arrived in Philadelphia, PA on September 19, 1743. It is likely that Johann had a birthday while on the voyage crossing the Atlantic since the church record gives his birth month as August, and this would account for the difference in the departure ship records logged by the English Captain at the port of Rotterdam. So Johann on this five month voyage must have turned another year older, and it is not uncommon for anyone to be off one year in age additionally, considering the German language translation to English. The next day after arrival, since Johann was a foreigner, by law he had to take the oath of allegiance to the Royal Crown of England, and was hurried to sign incompletely his signature at the court house in Philadelphia.

On November 16, 1746, Johann and ANN MARGARETHA REITER were married at Augustus Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trappe, Philadelphia County (now Montgomery County) PA and their marriage is recorded in the church's history. Officiating was Pastor Heinrich Melchior Muhlenberg, the founding patriarch of the American Lutheran Church.

He was 69 years of age. He left a widow and three children. Mr. Thomas was a soldier in the Mexican War. He was then quite a young man. In 1862 he enlisted in the 60th regiment of Illinois Volunteers and again servd his county in the field. In one of the severe fights in which the regiment was engaged, he lost an arm. He was discharged in 1865 and has lived at Elco ever since. He received a land warrant for service in the Mexican War and selected the land which he has since occupied as a homestead under it. His life was interesting and eventful. But he has paid the debt of nature as we alll must do sooner or later. One by one the older soldiers answer the last roll call and are mustered out."10,9
