Susannah ?1

F, b. circa 1610, d. 25 January 1672/73
Susannah ? was born circa 1610 at England.2 Susannah ? was also known as Susanna Wilterton Mary Lovering Holman believed that Susannah was a sister of Gregory Woltertown [Pillsbury Anc 1037-41] but in 1993 Sanborn, Anderson and Smith demonstrated that this could not be, and her maiden name remains unknown [TAG 68:160-175].3 As of 23 September 1633,her married name was Merrill.2 She married Nathaniel Merrill at Wherstead, County Suffolk, England, on 23 September 1633.2 She witnessed Nathaniel Merrill's death at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 16 March 1654/55.2 She married Stephen Jordan at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 16 August 1661.2 As of 16 August 1661,her married name was Jordan.2 In Stephen Jordan's will on 5 April 1667 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, Susannah, Susannah, Stephen, John and Elizabeth was named as an heir.4 Susannah ? died on 25 January 1672/73 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.2 She A.F. also has him m to Susannah Wolverton, Susannah Wellerton, Susannah Walterton, Susannah Wolterton, Susannah Peabody AF has her died Newbury, Essex, MA, but prob this indicates death of husband or second wife. Genealogical Guide to Early Settlers in America says 'Stephen came to America 1633/34 by himself in the Mary and John, his wife having died. related to the Captain Wollaston who in 1628 sold guns to Indians? see Andrews The Col Period of Am History, 1:340, 361-2 Genealogical Guide to Early Settlers in America says that Stephen married Susanna, the widow of Nathaniel Merrill. Was this wife 1 or wife 2? email: 'New England Marriages Prior to 1700' by Clarence Almon Torrey; Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc; 1985; page 504 has the following entry: MERRILL, Nathaniel (1601-1655) & Susanna WILTERTON / WOLLERTON (-1673), m/2 Stephen JORDAN; ca 1630?, in Eng?, 16 Mar 1635?; Newbury. 'The Family of John PIKE of Newbury, Massachusetts' by Allan Raymond Pike; Penobscot Press; 1996; page 713 says: It is supposed that Nathaniel was married before leaving England. However, Savage, in the 'Genealogical Dictionary of New England' (published in 1861) states that Nathaneil [sic] MERRILL married Susanna JORDAN (this may have just been copied from Coffin's 'History of Newbury' (1845). Torrey is generally considered a major successor to Savage's work and has had two supplements since his original volume was published. I have seen numerous references to Susannah being the daughter of Stephen WILTERTON of England but have yet to see documentation. Paul M. Noyes 4528 Robie Road Lilburn, Georgia 30047 (770) 978-3693 > The last I heard her name is not known. Hoyt says Susanna Jordan. Torrey says m2 Stephen Jordan. WOLTERTON has never been a *proven* surname for Nathaniel MERRILL's wife. It was *guessed* when after Nathaniel's death, young John went to Hartford to live with Gregory WOLTERTON. As Gregory was a wealthy, childless man, what young widow wouldn't send her son, when invited, to CT - to apprentice to a rich man?... young John became the adopted son of Gregory WOLTERTON and a rich man himself when Gregory died and left him his fortune! Gregory had 4 wives: 1) Susanna ( ) who died Hartford 1662 age 75, having had no children. Then a series of widows 2) Benet (TRITTON) STANLEY, widow of Thomas STANLEY, who d. Jan 1664/5; 3) Hannah (THURSTON) LORD, widow of Thomas LORD, who d. c. 1669, having given birth to one son Samuel WOLTERTON who died at age 7 months; and finally, 4) Jane ( ) (HOPKINS) WARD, widow of John HOPKINS and Nathaniel WARD, who survived Gregory and d. before 1679. In Gregory's will, (transcribed in 'Emily Angell') he remembered Jane, several nieces and nephews in England, the LORD step-children, plus many other folks around CT. He made John MERRILL his executor and primary heir of the 'tanyard' and all his 'howsing' and remainder of his large estate. There is no indication now that Susannah ( ), widow of immigrant Nathaniel MERRILL was any blood relation to Gregory WOLTERTON. Reghards, Muffy Moore.3
