Lucy Rolph is included in the biography of Murchertach (Murty) Loughlin and Jane ?; Notes for MURCHERTACH (MURTY) LOUGHLEN:
Letter from Beatrice Conklin Allegany, N.Y. Aril 29,1982.
Dear Steve Guy,- It is very refreshing to learn there are really some relatives who are interested in our ancestry. 1 spent a good deal of time on it about ten years ago and have neglected it since then. However, I think I know the Mildred Loughlen, (Forest's wife who lives in Portageville, N.Y.) Forest is Michael Loughlen's second wife's son. I have talked to him but he knew practically nothing about Michael's early days. Also I think the Iva Loughlen,(your grandmother you spoke of) is the Iva I met in Washington, D.C. some years ago. Was she a pianist? And was her husband an engineer the manager then of the Engineer's Club in Washington, D.C?

Anyway I can see you are the descendant of Burdette a son of Michael. I do not know the names of all of Michael's first family but can easily get it from Mildred if she is still alive. I have written to her but so far have not heard from her. But I know you are interested in the Irish family that came from Ireland. In 1846 the family left Ennystymon Ireland on a sailing vessel for America. They consisted of the father Murty (for Murchertach and old Irish name) Jane, the mother, Michael 16, Peter (my grandfather) Ellen 8years Susan and Nancy six and four I believe. Peter was 12 years old I might add. The father Murty is said to have been buried at sea and Jane the mother died soon after landing. This was not unusual as the voyage was long on poor vessels and the food would give out and I have read that the parents gave the food to the children. These were distressing days. At the pier people gathered to adopt the homeless children and the Loughlen family had the good luck to be taken by a Rolfe family who had only one child, a daughter. I see you have her name Lucy.

Even though we had our grandfather Peter to learn more about his early times no one ever gleaned anything more from him except that he knew nothing of Ireland but poverty and starvation and really seemed very reluctant to talk about it. he said all they had to eat was potatoes and sour milk. I used to talk with him when a small child and he would sing Irish songs about the cucoo and the blackbird. Incidentally, I have heard the blackbird in Ireland and it is really a songbird. Now you have Michaels birthdate wrong. Peter's was 1833 and Michael's was 1830.
My uncle Dr. Thomas Bernard Loughlen, (Peter had two sons medical doctors) went to a convention in Paris when he was a young man and he made a quick trip over to Ireland to Ennystymon and got Peter's birthdate from the Church there from a Fr. Sheehan. But he did not inquire about any of the others or perhaps he could not get it. Grandpa had told him where to go and to look at the new church in Cluona which was just outside Ennystymon and was close to where the Loughlens lived. Peter said it was being built the year they left. And sure enough when I was there in 1963 I saw the brass plate on the church. It read " Built in 1846, the year of the famine." So you see they at least started out in 1846. Peter also told Dr. Tom to look for Fanny O'Day's Place and to have a flip. And Dr. Tom left a note saying he did. I have this note. If you have read any of the books about the famine you know these days must have been unbelievable.

Now the sad part comes as the little family became separated and that is why we know so little about each other. The Rolfes were protestant and they wanted to bring the children up in their belief. Michael accepted it and eventually married Lucy Rolfe. Peter did not and the story goes that one Saturday when carrying water he decided he did not want to go to the Rolfe's church the next day and he ran away. He returned later and got Ellen at night. These two retained their Catholic religion they brought from Ireland ( Ireland was 99% Catholic). Peter never had anything but praise for the Rolfes and often spoke of mother Rolfe's large loaves of bread. They were good people to take the little family but of course many took the children to work on their farms. It is all very sad.
Peter returned many times to Michael when he was married and tried to have him return to his religion. Mildred Loughlen or I think it was Forest who said that Michael would say when Peter came-" Now if you have come to talk religion you can go."
These were the Penal Days in Ireland when a Roman Catholic was stripped of his land and could not go to school unless he became a Member of the Church of England or as the English called it "Converted from Popery". I have seen records of those who retained their land by going over to the English. That started the Irish to have the so called "Hedge schools". No Catholic could hold public office until the time of Daniel O'Connell who became educated in France and then was elected a member of the Parliament. His Uncle Morgan O'Connell was a smuggler and had the money to send Daniel to France. Irish could not export their wool so there were evidently smugglers who carried on the trade from caves, I have read.
Now I have been twice to Ireland once in 1958 and then 1963 when Kennedy was visiting there. I have looked up records in Dublin Castle and in the Library of Congress when I lived there. There is a book in the library of Congress, the only one in the United States (A very scarce volume which tells about what happened in the County Clare
It is called "The History and Topography of the County Clare. In that book is the proof of the importance of the O'Loughlen family in old Ireland-they owned half of western Ireland and had 22 castles. The O'Connors owned the other half with as many castles. Roderick O'Connor was the last king of all Ireland he was divested of his kingdom by Henry VIII who nevertheless would never imprison him. By the end of Elizabeth I reign they had lost everything-Owney O'Loughlen was hung outside his castle of Glinn. Then of course came Cromwell who I have heard the British say even the English did not like him. He gave the Irish estates to Dutch followers.
If you want an argument for preparedness for war-Ireland was a good example. They had no cannon only battle-axes -it is said that only one cannon conquered eastern Ireland. Irish leaders had their own poet, their barrister or brehon each in his own castle. I have a list of the castles owned by The O'Loughlen and location. Ballyvaughan was the Chiefs castle. Its ruins are still there.

I am just tearing this off so you will have to excuse the mistakes. From your letter you will welcome any information. I heard from Forest's wife yesterday. o:he has been in the hospital but will return to Wiscoy, the old home of your grand or great, great grandfather. In the meantime I have found her note to me about Susan and Nancy but I still do not know the names of all of Michael's children - however she will certainly know them and she will write me after the 21st of May. I can recall three names-Robert, Elmer and Burdette. I heard my mother mention these but she didn't know them. You see by Mildred's note that Nancy called one of her sons Elmer. It is all very interesting. I didn't do much research on Michael's family I concentrated on Ireland.
Perhaps you are not interested in the Ireland part. Let me know. 1y niece Marion Horey, is married to the Surrogate of the County and he ha- a Xerox in his office. She could have some of these papers done. Let me tell you there is no one left who has as much as I have and I really should have gotten it together long ago.
I am going to close now and will send you Mildred's letter later on.
Sincerely,

Beatrice Conklin.

Pc.. After spending much time in Dublin Castle and in records in Dublin
I was able to find no trace of the family (immediate) that Murty came from. Basil O'Connell of the Genealogical Bureau in Dublin Castle said that it could be done but that it would take an American task force and a lot of money but most of all time. The people went underground in the Venal Times. I have never known anyone who could go beyond 1820. There might be families that hid their records but even a deed to property meant nothing.

10/17/2005 e-mail from Nita Mc Guinness [mcguin@eircom.net] .........From an Ireland census a book, a page with the heading "Occupiers of land in the Parish of Clooney (Corcomroe) on 4th January 1834" contained the foolowing entry, O'Loghlin / Murty / Keilkille / Clooney (Corcomroe.)2 Lucy Rolph witnessed the census 1820 of Stephen Rolph and Electa Rolph; Caph Rolf 1 male 0-9; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 26 thru 44; 3 females 0-9, 1 female 16-25; 3 persons engaged in agrculture
Stephen (36) could be the 1 male 26-44; Electa (22) the 1 female 16-25. Havie (5) would be the 1 male 0-9. The 2 males are unknown, but appear again in 1830. The 3 females 0-9 could include Luiza (8); the other 2 females are unknown, unless the census was not completed until 1824, when Maria and Lucy could be included.3 Lucy Rolph was born in 1824 at Perry, Genesee County, New York; date based on 1850 census; place is conjecture.1 She witnessed the census 1830 of Stephen Rolph and Electa Rolph; close by is Nathaniel Wells, maybe relative of Diadema Wells?
Stephen Rolph 2 males 0-4; 1 male 10-14; 3 males 20-29; 1 male 40-49; 2 females 5-9; 1 female 15-19; 1 female 30-39.
Stephen (46) would be the 1 male 40-49 and Electa (32) would be the 1 female 30-39. The 2 males 0-4 would be Lyman (4) and EA (1). Haver (15) could be the 1 male 10-14. We do not know who the 3 males 20-29 might be. Maria (8) and Lucy (6) would be the 2 females 5-9; Luiza (18) would be the 1 female 15-19.4 Lucy Rolph witnessed the census 1840 of Stephen Rolph and Electa Osborn; now Livingston County; Havoe [sic] Rolph 1 male 20-29; 1 female 15 thru 19; 2 total in agriculture
Stephen Rolph 2 males 5 thru 9; 2 males 10-14; 1 male 50-59; 2 females 0-4 2 females 15 thru 19 1 female 50 thru 59
Havoe and wife are not otherwise known. Stephen would have been 56 in 1840, Electa 42 (perhaps the 1 female 50-59 is misplaced). Benjamin (8) and Nelson (7) would be the 2 males 5-9. Lyman (14) and Edwin (11) would be the 2 males 10-14. Harriet (3) and Jane (months) would be the 2 females 0-4. Maria (18) and Lucy (16) would be the 2 females 15 thru 19.5 Lucy Rolph 1850 census-- age 26 in 1850.1 Electa, Lucy, Benjamin, Nelson and Electa was listed as a household member living with Stephen Rolph on the 1850 Census at Portage, Livingston County, New York; 201 301 Stephen Rolph 66 male farmer $2700 b CT; Electa 53 female b NY; Lucy L. 26 female b NY; Benjamin 18 male farmerb NY attended school; Nelson 17 male farmer b NY attended school ; Jane 10 female b NY ; Susan OLaffen 17 female b Ireland.6 As of say 1851,her married name was Loughlin.7 She married Michael Loughlin at Portage, Livingston County, New York, say 1851.7,8 Lucy Rolph died on 22 November 1885 at Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington.9,10
