That is mere hearsay. There is no record of the emigration of Cockermouth Fletchers at that time, nor any mentions of an overseas Robert Fletcher during the time Robert Fletcher of Concord was flourishing in Massachusetts, nor any record of Robert's arrival in Massachusetts, for that matter. What's more, there isn't any record of the baptism of a Robert Fletcher in Yorkshire matching the emigrant. (Obviously, it is impossible to prove that such records never existed, but the point is that no one has ever brought forward any evidence to support this notion that Robert Fletcher came from Yorkshire. As I said yesterday, the simple fact is that the Yorkshire Fletchers were prominent, and there do exist many records about them, so researchers in America would always start with them in trying to dig up Robert's ancestry. Unfortunately, these folks have all failed. However, some of them evidently passed along their unsupported suspicions to William Whellan as 'fact', leading him to spread the rumor further.) > How does this fit wth your theories, for surely that is what they are if you > cannot be sure about where William was born. There were many Fletcher > families in England and certainly one of many thrived in Cumberland at that > time. Quite so. We cannot rule out the Cockermouth family. However, without even the tiniest shred of evidence pointing to Robert Fletcher's origins, it is absurd to pick a particular family as 'it'. > It may be that this information is suspect and based on assumptions by > Whellan, but it is the only solid information I have come up with in four > years of research. Have all the dates quoted been verified? The point is that *no* dates have been verified. Robert's birth is deduced from the age he stated ('about 80') when he wrote his will in 1672/3. That is undoubtedly close to the truth, but it is by no means 'verified'. In short, Whellan's account is so far from solid that country folk would instantly recognize its consistency and naturally avoid stepping in it.
