Josiah Mathias Lingle was born on 12 January 1852 at Cobden, Union County, Illinois.3 He was 'He as single in 1883 and managing the home farm, acc to Perrin's History' [Konrad Dillow], DescendaDates in 1883 at Union County, Illinois.2 He married Nella Cora Coveer on 25 November 1884 at Makonda, Jackson County, Illinois.3 Josiah Mathias Lingle died on 21 March 1898 at Makanda, Johnson County, Illinois, at age 46; "Josiah died 21 Mar 1898 in Makanda, Jackson Co IL and was buried 22 Mar 188 in Evergreen Cem., Makanda, Jackson Co."
"The following is extracted from Josiah' obituary: 'Josiah became ill on 6 Mar 1898, one day before the death of his mother, who had often expressed the desire that she might be the first of the two to die. Josiah expressed his convictions in these words, spoken soon after his mother's death: 'I shall not leave here till I am borne away.' He spent many of his last hours in prayer, praising God fr His goodness to him. He assured his faithful wife that he had no fear of eath, being certain of a home beyond. His death was a quiet one and apparently free from suffering. Josiah was a man whom everyone loved. He was humble, meek, quiet, honest and compassionate. His patience and Christian fortitude were shown, not only during his illness, but all through his life. He has left many warm and loving friends in Makanda as well as at Cobden."3

Bastian Lence1

M, b. 12 October 1796, d. 1840
FatherDewalt Lentz Sr2 b. 26 Jun 1766, d. bt 1831 - 1840
Motherwife ?1 b. c 1775, d. bt 1818 - 1820
Bastian Lence was Marriage; Person Source.3 He B42- Boston (Bastian) Lentz was born on 12 Oct 1796, sponsored at baptism by John Luckenbille, as is shown by the records of the Organ Church in Rowan Co., NC. This may be the other grandparent sponsoring the second child as was the custom for Lutherans. This may be a lead to the name of the wife of B4- Devault Lentz.
D1- Anna Mareretha Lentz apparently married John Luckenbille as shown by various family connections. This is believed to have been the case. Their children are not known to us. If B4- Duvall Lentz did marry their daughter, he would have married a 1st cousin once-removed. It appears that the Lentz people had a preference for marrying cousins. This is John Paul Lentz's 'preferred ' guess since sponsors did not show outside of their immediate family line without unusual circumstances. It also fits the sponsoring custom of the Lutheran congregations.
He married on 20 Feb 1817 in Rowan Co., to B22- Elizabeth Lentz, who was born 8 Jun 1790 and died in 1824 in IL. They had five children. This must be the same person as in 'Rowan Marriages 1853-1868,' p. 236: LENCE, Boston & Betsey LANCE, 20 Feb 1817; John Lence, bondsman; Milo A Giles, witness.
He married SECOND on 24 Dec 1824 in Union Co., IL, to Mrs. Sophy Elizabeth (Hartline) Lentz, who was born about 1795 and died between 1850 and 1860. She was the widow of B25- Peter Lentz, Jr. There were four children in this marriage.
B42- Boston Lentz died in 1840 in Union Co., IL. Sophia was appointed guardian of Bostian Lentz's minor children in 1845. Bastian Lence was also known as Bastian Lentz.1 He and Elizabeth Lentz Also see 'Rowan Marriages, 1753-1868,' p. 236: Lence, Boston & Betsey
Lance, 20 Feb 1817; John Lence, bondsman; Milo A. Giles, wit. Bastian Lence and Dewalt Lentz B15- Dewalt Lentz, b. 12 Oct 1796, from Van Poole records as reported by others. Account of this child have not been found. He probably originated in the Watts research records, but no documentation has been received.
In the Organ Church Baptismal Records there is a baby listed as born on 12 Oct 1796, but this is shown as Bastian (Lentz), baptized on 12 Nov 1796, parent Dewald Lentz, sponsor John Luckenbille.
No Dewalt Lentz (or similar spelling) shows in his age bracket on the 1820, 1830, or 1840 censuses of Rowan Co. We found no records.1 Bastian Lence was born on 12 October 1796 at Rowan County, North Carolina; Source states: 'Born Oct 12, 1796, Bastian (Lentz), baptized Nov. 12, 1796, parents Dewald Lentz, sponsor John Luckenbille.4,1' He was baptized on 12 November 1796 at Zion (Organ) Lutheran Church, Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina; See birth info, which includes baptismal info.1 Bastian Lence was also known as Boston Lentz.2 John and Bastian was probably a free white male, under 10 years old, in Dewalt Lentz Sr's household on the 1800 Census at Rowan County, North Carolina; Davott Lence 2 males 0-9 (John 6; Bastian 4); 1 male 26-44 (Dewald); 1 female 0-9 (Elizabeth); 1 female 16-25 (wife 1).5 Bastian Lence married Elizabeth Lentz, daughter of Dewalt Lentz Sr and wife ?, on 20 February 1817 at Rowan County, North Carolina; Source states: 'Lence, Boston & Betsey Lance, 20 Feb 1817; John Lence, bondsman; Milo A. Giles, wit. at Rowan County, North Carolina.1 Bastian Lence and Elizabeth Lentz B22- Elizabeth Lentz was born 8 Jun 1790 in Rowan Co., NC. Her birth and baptismal records are in the Organ Church records, but no sponsor shows in the entry. She was married on 20 Feb 1817 to B42- Boston Lence (Lentz), and the marriage was bonded by B41- John Lentz, his brother. Elizabeth and Boston were first cousins. They moved to IL, where she died in 1824 or before, and B42- Bostan Lentz married SECOND to widow Sophia Lentz, widow of his cousin B25- Peter Lentz, Jr. Sophia is believed to have been a niece of the wife of B2- Peter Lentz, who was Maria Magdalena Hartline. (See B9- Michael.) Elizabeth had five children. Their children and descendents will be found under the family number of their father after this. Her five children: B221- Rebecca Lentz, b. 1816, m. 23 Feb 1839 in Union Co., IL to Paul Hoffner, who was born in 1813 in NC. B222- Elizabeth Lentz, b. c. 1819 B223- Adam Lentz, b. 20 Jan 1816, d. 19 Jul 1901, m. Mary Ann E. Lingle. B224- Parmelia Lentz, b. c. 1822 B225- Jacob Lentz, b. c. 1823, m. Rosanna Laws, b., c. 1824, Union Co.
