At the time of his death he owned lots 28 of Grammers Donation andlots 79,80, and 81 of Grammers addition to the city of Jonesboro. Adam asked that a guardian be appointed for his minor siblings, Sarah Jane, Alexander, Serena, and Elenor."4,3 He was buried at Jonesboro Cemetery, Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois.3

He was born 16 Feb 1820, in Rowan County, NC, and came to Union County with his father, Henry Cruse Sr, arriving 20 Oct 1820. He was a merchant in Jonesboro in the early 1860's, and 24 years ago he moved to his farm a few miles south of Jonesboro. He married Nancy Ury 12 Feb 1864. He left a widow, and two daughters, Rosella wife of Joseph Eddleman and Isophene Cruse. He also left three brothers and three sisters, Peter Cruse and John Cruse of near Mill Creek, Alexander Cruse of Mississippi, Christina wife of S. P. Troutman of Montgomery County (He was 72 and a veteran of the Mexican War), Caroline wife of John M Hileman, and Leah wife of Thomas Ury. He was a charter member of Salem Lutheran Church.".11 Peter H Cruse died on 9 February 1895 at Union County, Illinois, at age 65; The Cairo Citizen Thursday 14 Feb 1895:"Peter H Cruse, an old resident of Union County, died at his home one mile east of Mill Creek, on the Dongola road, last Saturday after an illness of only nine days. The deceased was born in the house where he died, on October 29, 1829, which made him 65 year old at his death. He leavs a widow and three daughters, also one brother and three sisters. The community where he lived suffered a great loss in his death.12,1 "

He got a job on the river and went to New Orleans on flat boats for four months. He sailed by ship around the coast to Philadelphia where his grandfather had landed almost 100 years earlier. He then went down the Ohio River to Marysville, KY. Philip went to Tere Haute, IN, then to Washington, Daviess County, IN. He worked until he could afford to open his own store selling hardware goods.He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He owned an 80 acre farm in IN and also kept a hotel-tavern where the Presbyterian Ch now stands. See History of Daviess County, IN.
In "The History of Knox and Daviess Counties Indiana," published by the Goodspeed Publishing Company, Chicago (1886) at page 758 it states: He [Philip] married three times, the first to Sara Ruddick, who bore him these children: Seth H, Minerva, John R, Joseph W and Elizabeth. Only John is now living."
