Wendel Cruse was named as sponser at Absolom's baptism. Twenty-five years earlier Absolom's grandfather, Johann Philip Cruse, had helped in the construction of the church building. Absolom's parents, Henry C. Cruse and Susanna Cress, were married in this church by Pastor Carl August Gottlieb Storch. Shortly after the death of his grandfather in 1805, his parents left NC for OH. Apparently his aunt and uncle, Anna Maria and Jacob Lingle, were already in Butler County, OH when Absolom's family arrived there. In October 1816, the family moved to Daviess County, IN and in 1820 made their way with the family of Martin McCoy (Rebecca's family) to Washington Township, Marion County, IN by June of that year. The two families had gone up the White River in a boat to within eight miles of Indianapolis and the rest of the way in wagons. The family settled on Fall Creek where they remained for several years. Absolom and Rebecca were married in Marion County in 1824 and several children were born to them there. Rebecca's family was from KY. Her mother died in 1821 in Marion County, IN. Her father was a great hunter and trapper. He was with the Indians most of the time. When he was missing, it was supposed that he had been killed by the Indians. Nov 23, 1827 Absolom was present at the sale of the estate of Thomas West in Hamilton County, IN. In Marion County, Washington Township, IN in 1829, Absolom was listed as taxable in the Assessment Rolls of taxable persons -- 1 poll, as was his brother, Solomon. The 1830 census of Marion County, IN shows Absolom with - one male under five, one 20-30, two females under 5, on 5-10, and one 20-30 in his household. Sometime in 1837 or 1838,Absolom moved his family to IL. A land transaction recorded in the courthouse at Salem, IL shows that on Feb 5, 1839, Absolom purchaed for $400, thirty-eight acres of land in Marion County designated as - The southeast quarter of the northeast quarrter of Section No six, Township No three, north of the base line in range No two, east of the third principal meridian. Absolom is listed in the 1840 census with - two males under 5, two 5-10, one 40-50, one female under 5, two 5-10, one 30-40. The 1850 Marion County census names seven of his children and states occupation as farmer. Rebecca died in 1852, leaving small children and in 1853, Absolom and Elizabeth HInes were married in Marion County, IL. About 1859, Absolom once again sought new territory; this time in Parker County, TX, close to the Tarrant County line. Two of Absolom's children by his marriage to Rebecca McCoy, Eliza Ann and Job accompanied Absolom and Elizabeth to TX. A creek ran through his property. Possibly on this property was the first location of the Walnut Creek Baptist Ch as described in The History of Parker Cnty. Walnut Creek Baptist Ch sits nestled in the bend of Walnut Creek in the northeast part of Parker County in the little community of Reno. Little is known of the church history from 1866 to 1886, as the church records were torn up or destroyed. It is believed the church was organized on or about July 25, 1866 in a log cabin near Walnut Creek on the old Cruse place with thirty charter members. Included in those thirty charter members were Eliza Ann Cruse Lawrence (dau of Absolom), her husband, Beverage Lawrence; her mother-in-law, Nancy Lawrence, and Beverage Lawrence's sister and brother-in-law Nancy Lawrence Pruet and Madison Floyd Pruet. Elizabeth died in childbirth in 1868. Approximately two years later, Absolom was married to Jane (Nix) Castleberry. Absolom was a farmer and raised wheat and cotton. The cotton he took to Fort Worth and the wheat to Weatherford, TX. At one time he raised hroses for the fire department at Weatherford. It is told that Absolom did not die peacefully in bed. When he was 92 yrs old, he started to the gin in Fort Worth with three bales of cotton on his wagon. The wagon hit a tree stump, throwing him out of the wagon and a bale of cotton fell on him. About a year after Absolom's death, for the sum of $1/ 00, Jane deeded Absolom's land to his children by his second wife, Elizabeth. The deed was not actually recorded for twenty years in 1915. Jane died of paralysis in 1917 and was buried in the Nelson Cemetery, but not beside Absolom. Absolom and Elizabeth were buried side by side in the Nelson Cemetery and have identical tombstones.1 He was Farmer.3 He married Rebecca McCoy at Marion County, Indiana, on 9 February 1824.3 He witnessed Rebecca McCoy's death at Patoka, Marion County, Illinois, on 26 January 1853. "buried in Cruse Farm, Patoka, Marion Co, IL.".3,6 He married Elizabeth Hines at Salem, Marion County, Illinois, on 6 September 1853.3 He witnessed Elizabeth Hines's death at Parker County, Texas, on 1 December 1868. Buried in Nelson Cemetery, Azle, Parker County, TX.3 He married Jane Nix Castleberry at Reno, Parker County, Texas, in 1869.7,6 Absalom was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census at Enumeration District 136, Precinct Number 2, Parker County, Texas. 426 426 Cruse AB white male 80 married farmer unemployed 6 months NC NC NC; Jane white female 38 wife married keeping house TN TN; Biga white male 17 son single works on farm attending school TX NC IN; Didona white female 15 daughter single at school attending school TX NC IN; Rid white male 12 son single works on farm attending school TX NC IN; Dore white female 9 daughter single attending school TX NC TN; Lee white male 8 son single TX NC TN; Castlebury James white male 40 boarder single works on farm AL AL AL.8 He died on 26 January 1892 at Axle, Parker County, Texas, at age 92.3,6 He was buried at Nelson Cemetery, Azle, Parker County, Texas.3
