Asahel Blodgett1

M, b. 19 June 1755, d. 2 June 1842
FatherJeremiah Blodgett1 b. 20 Jul 1721, d. 1796
MotherMiriam Provender1 b. c 1720, d. May 1800
The family was one of prominence and influence in a community where the simple manners and rugged features of the early New England life contributed to the development of sterling traits of character. . . He grew up on the paternal farm and arrived at manhood in the early part of the Revolutionary War. Two older brothers died in the service. . .[He served for 3 months 1776-1777, then' He does not appear to have entgerd the army again, and as the was the only surviving son old enough to manage affairs he remained at home with his parents, and for their support received the Homestead Farm. [After his parents died, ASahel built] a house on the ancestral place [in Hudson], which his son Caleb describd somewhat as follows. . .The house was a one-story, frame structure, a cellar under the whole. A door in the center of the front side opened into an entry from which access was hadto the large rooms, one on either side. A huge chimney in the centre had a fireplace in each room, large enough to burn 4-foot wood. There was a brick oven at the side of the fireplace in the kitchen and living room. . .The cooking was done over the open wood fire; a big crane, with swinging connections, was attached to one side of the fireplace, and from it depended hooks of graduated lengths, from which hung, as occason required, the various pots and kettles of the kitchen service. . .Once a week the big oven was heated and a week's supply of bread and pies baked, and the traditional pot of New England beans was seldom omitted...IN 1805 Asahel sold his farm at Hudson and bought one at Dorchester, whither he removed in the spring of 1806. . .2 Asahel Blodgett was born on 19 June 1755 at Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire; formerly Nottingham West.2 He Asahel entered the service in December 1776, as appears by the following record in New Hampshire War Rolls, Vol. i: p. 438. . .IN a Monthly Company Return his name appears as follows: Asahel Blodgett one months pay 3; billeting in New York 2.2 total expenses 5.2 pounds. .He was taken sick with a fever soon after arriving at Fishkill, NY, and getting a furlough went to Danbury Conn, where he remained until his short term of service, three months, was out."3 He married Catherine Pollard at Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 13 December 1781.4 He witnessed Catherine Pollard's death at Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 20 December 1795. Age 34 yrs; "The wife, Catherine, died Dec 20 1795, and was interred in the "Blodgett Cemetery" in Hudson..4 He married Lois Pollard at Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, between 1796 and 1797.4 They resided at New Hampshire between 1798 and 1810. All ch born Hudson except Betsey who was b Dorchester.5 Asahel Blodgett Spring 1805 sold home (but under agreement to stay for one yr) and went 1806 to Dorchester, NH. Hudson farm, about 100 acres, sold for $2,000. Dorchester farm 400 acres, bought for $2,000. Not a change for the better. Hudson farm on river, easily tilled, and with market near at hand for produce to sell. Dorchester farm was in a poor town, 70 miles further north, away from market, schools, or churches. Soil might be called 'strong' but cold, wet, stony, and hard to till. 1804 and 1805 extremely hot dry weather, crops at Hudson injured by drought. Dorchester farm looked better in 1805. 1806 ordinary temp, but 1807, 1808, 1809 and 1810 were cold and wet. 1809 very little corn got ripe in Dorchester. Information on Dorchester farm and children of Asahel are in Blodgett file. Also info on Caleb Blodgett, Jr, son of Caleb Blodgett, Dartmouth College Grad and lawyer and judge. Probably many of the Blodgetts in this area are from this Blodgett. Family style of living in Hudson very plain and simple. Milk, corn, and rye bread and bean porridge were staple articles of food, morning and night, with meat of some kind at noon. Wheat flour was unknown. First wheat Caleb saw was in Bow NH at age 12. Clothing nearly all homemade. Shoemaker came to house and there made boots and shoes for family, customer finding his own leather. Every man who employed a blacksmith found his own iron. Houses were poor, never plastered, and usually not clap boarded. Little money in circulation at Hudson; much less in Dorchster. Caleeb Blodgett recollections. Asahel son's Jeremiah bur family burial lot in Wentworth, NH. Asahel, Lois Pollard Blodgett, Sybil, dau of Asahel; Deacon Benia Blodgett and Betsey are all buried 3/4 mile from spot where Asahel Blodgett lived and died in Dorchester, 1 mile and 1/4 from Dorchester Town House. Blodget grave yard. Once a week, in a big oven, a week's supply of bread and pies were baked along with NE Baked Beans. Furniture and furnishings of house were primitve and simple. High corded bedstead supported straw and feather bed. Linen sheets used in summer. Woolen sheets of homemade flannel were found more agreeable in winter. Heavy comforter added for warmth. Patchwork quilt covered the whole. Tables and chairs of plainest description. Seat of basketwork. Broom stought handle of hemlock twigs bound of succesive layers until proper dimensions reached. A broom made inthis way did good work and lasted several weeks. Skeins of yarn were hung to dry after scouring from ceiling holes in kitchen. In autumn circlets of pumpkins and strings of corded apples were hung to dry for winter use. Lower room great open garret, broken only by the great chimney. Here older children slept. Corn spread to dry in fall. Roof of house shingled, but the outside walls were simple, feather-edged boards nailed to frame. Not clap boarded on outside, nor was it lathed and plastered on inside. only an inch of pine board protected from rigor of NE winter. This house was one of the best in the town. Illustrates manner of life of NE farmers at that time. 1800 it was a winter's work to cut and haul woood for a winter's supply. Oxen exclusively used for farm work. All farming implements were heavy and clumsy. Hay cut with scythe. Rye and oats cut with sickle and threshed with flail. Man's work hard; woman's more exacting. Beyond the daily routine of household cares, also was dairy work, clothing of family (card, spin, weave cloth with which family to be clothed; woolen fabrics sometimes died at home or sent to fulling-mill to be died, scoured, and finished. Garments made by hand. Women made own garments and man's everyday clothes. Professional tailors who came with fur sheers, pressboard, and goose made men's Sunday suits). Average farmer's family very frugal. Produced everything they consumed - staple articles of food were brown bread made of corn and rye mixed, beans, peas, potatoes and a moderate amount of meat, mostly salted. Tea and coffee not used to any considerable extent. Roasted peas and crust coffee were frequently used instead. Maple orchards furnished sugar. Cidar was a home product and universally used. Man's standing not impaired by moderate use of NE rum. Also had to buy salt, a few spices, and perhaps s a little calico and coarse cotton cloth. Mental improvement and recration limited. Went to meeting on Sunday and as a matter of course heard two sermons, usually of a doctrinal character. During noon hour men gatherd outside meeting house and discussed weather, crops, and politics. Inside women talked of matters intersting to feminine mind. Usuually owned as books -- the Bible, very likely the Pilgrim's Progress and prob Fox's Book of Martyrs and Josephus' War of the Jews. Farmers's almanac always hung in conspicious position and was consulted with great regularity. Asahal had 8 sons and 5 daus. Ten lived to attain within an average of 80, and 3 died under 30. between 1805 and 1842 at Dorchester, Grafton County, New Hampshire.3 He died on 2 June 1842 at Dorchester, Grafton County, New Hampshire, at age 86; "He died at Dorchester June 2 1842, and was buried in "Blodgett Cemetery," about one mile northwest from the Town House" - Asahel Blodgett, p. 35.5 He was strict Calvinistic faith.1

He removed with his father's family in March 1806 to Dorchester, NHY, where he co-operated with his father and brothes in clearing all of the forest and bringing into cultivation a large farm which proved of sterile soil, and in one of the poorest townships of the State. For a few years after the clearing of the land good crops of corn, potatoes, and rye were obtained, but after the stimulating effect of the ashes had ceased, it was found coldand unproductive. Like many other young men in those days, after coming of age he went"down country" and for a time worked in and about Boston; but his home was in Dorchester, and here he married June 21 1827, Sally Cheever, born in Danvers,Mass, Nov. 29, 1800.
