Hans Christian Ingwall Hanson1

M, b. 14 April 1858, d. 18 May 1914
Hans Christian Ingwall Hanson was also known as Hans Christian Ingvall Hansen.2 Hans Christian Ingwall Hanson was also known as Hans Christian Ingvall Hanson.2 Hans Christian Ingwall Hanson was also known as Ingwall Hanson.3 He was born on 14 April 1858 at Eiker, Buskerud, Norway; 'Our story opens in Norway in a community called Eiker near Drammen. Here, on the 14th of April, 1858, Hans Christian Ingvall Hansen was born to the 30 year-old shoemaker Hans Hansen Lysagereie and his 29 year-old wife, Jorgine Christoffers-Datter Hol st. Hans and Jorgine were members of the Lutheran Church of Haug Kirke, and on the 13th of June, 1858, their son was christened (per HCI's birth certificate). On December 2, 1860, Hans and Jorgine were blessed with a daughter, Matilda (it is very likely that they also had an older daughter, Hannah, born Nov. 7, 1855, who died at age 18 in Wisconsin) (per Hans Hanson Civil War records and notes left by HCI) The time in Scandinavia was a time of famine and sickness, due to crop failures resulting from years of poor weather conditions. Families were starving, while their small children begged in the streets for hand-outs. The Lutheran ministers dictated strictly to their members with the support of local sheriffs. The land of freedom to be found in America gave many Scandinavians their only hope for the future, and many sold all but their basic possessions to buy passage across the Atlantic. In 1862 Hans bought passage for his family and began their voyage accompanied by Andrew C. Holst (most-likely Jorgine's brother). Per a statement made by Andrew, 'Jorgine Hanson died aboard ship on April 16, 1862, some distance off Pirdice Light House, and I was present at her death' (per Hans Hanson's military pension records). After arrival at New York Harbor, Hans and Andrew, along with the Hanson children, began their journey to Wisconsin. (Per Holst family legend, John Holst was already residing in Wisconsin as a homesteader-- John was likely to be Jorgine and Andrew's brother). Many Norwegian families had immigrated to Wisconsin and began to settle the land along with Swedish and German immigrants. Residing in the community was another couple from Norway by the names of Amund and Emelia Nilson. On September 14, 1862, Amund passed away, leaving Emelia alone with two children and expecting a third. On February 8, 1863, Hans Hanson married Emelia Nilson. They combined their two families and on April 9,1863, Emelia's third child was born. They resided together in the town of Spring Brook, WI until February 27, 1864, when both Hans Hanson and Andrew Holst enlisted their services to the Civil War in the town of Bloomer Prairie, WI, and were mustered-in to the 4th WI Calvary. (Per Hans Military records, he was 5' 9' tall, had blue eyes, blond-to-light brown hair, and was fair complected. Hans called himself Hans Hanson Aker, also written in military records as H.H. Eger [I'm sure Aker was an Americanized form of Lysagereie]. Hans listed his occupation asa tanner and aquired a military nickname of 'Eager-Hans.') The 4th Wisconsin was sent to Baton Rouge, LA, where Hans became ill from -- as his medical records show, chronic diahhrea, including jaundice (probably Malaria, Cholera, or Yellow Fever) and was given a leave of absence to return to Wisconsin on September 27, 1864-- He returned to Spring Brook and passed away on January 12, 1865, from the disease at age 37. Andrew Holst remained actively with the 4th Wisconsin and was then transferred to Company F from Company K. He was mustered out on May 28, 1866 (WI State Historical Soc records). Per family stories, Hans Ingwall and Matilda were raised by one of the Holst families, possibly John's. -- Hanson Roots (2 pages, mimeo.)3,4 He was baptized on 13 June 1858 at Eiker, Buskerud, Norway; Lutheran Church Haug Kirke

The sale noted that the mortgage of $200, (assumed by Gordon Town) was now 'past due.' on 15 December 1863 at Mount Vernon, Winona County, Minnesota.2 He and Aurilla Putnam appeared on the census of 1865 at Mount Vernon Township, Winona County, Minnesota; 'We did find the C.D. [sic] and Aurila [sic] Porter family in the Minnesota State Census of 1865. The family was then residing in Mount Vernon Township, Winona County, Minn. One member, Josiah, is shown as being in military service. The 1865 Census shows only names and sex. Age and relationship are not shown' Letter 1/12/66 from Fred Thibodeau, Deputy State Archivist, State of Minnesota, State Archives and Records Service.2 He married Mary M Randall at Winona County, Minnesota, circa 1868.7 Oliver was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census at St. Charles, Winona County, Minnesota. 121 135 Porter OD 55 male white ins agent fire 600 150 NY; Mary M 52 female white keeping house 1000 200 NH; Randall, WC 30 male white farmer 6000 0 NH; -- Eva A 2 female white MN; Lane Abby 19 female white domestic servant NY.7 He and Mary M Porter appeared on the census of 1 May 1875 at Enumeration District 6, St Charles, Winona County, Minnesota; 87 Oliver Porter 68 male white VT VT VT; Mary M Porter 59 female NH MA MA.8 He witnessed an unknown person 's death at St. Charles, Winona County, Minnesota, on 25 February 1880. Mrs. Mary M Porter died in St Charles on the 25th of February, aged 65 years. Mrs. Porter was born in Keene, NH, came to Wisconsin many years since, from which state she removed to Minnesota fifteen or sixteen years ago -- most of which time she has resided in St. Charles. She leaves three children to mourn her departure-- Wesley Randall, now in Kansas; Mrs. Josephine Brainard, of Montevideo, MN; and Mrs. M W Green of the town of St. Charles..1 Rev Oliver Davis Porter died on 26 September 1895 at Kiona, Benton County, Washington, at age 82; "O D Porter Sep 26th 1895 Kiona Wash aged 82 years one month and six days" Rolph Jacob O Family Bible.1 He was buried at Kiona Cemetery, Benton City, Benton County, Washington.2 He Although Rolph family Bible lists O.D. Porter as born in 'Athen, Windham County, VT,' there is no birth record in the office of the VT Secretary of State, and Wyman's History of Athen, VT, does not contain a genealogy of the Porter family, acc to letter, 21 Dec 1965, to Gary Rolph from Lawrence J. Turgeon, State Librarian, Vermont State Library. Could the family possibly have moved early to Royalton, Windsor County, VT? Oliver and Aurilla Porter evidently lived in New York from 1835 through 1844. Florence is in Oneida County -- Lois Matthews, The Expansion of New England, p. 163, says 'Presbyterians were established early in western New York, and under these organizations many weak Congregational Churches placed themselves, under an 'accomodation system,' by which they retained most of their own peculiar administriv forms and their own creed, yet had the advantage of united support from their neighbor churches. The Congregational Church of Florence, Oneida County, was organized in 1816 with ten members, but soon joined the Presbytery on the 'accomodation system.' Rosina Putnam Porter was born in Oswego County, NY-- the others also? Moved between 1844 and 1850 to Lake County, IL? 'Whitewater Township. . .is generally very much broken. On the western part, however, nearly the entire length of the township skirts on Greenwood prairie, in Wabasha county. The township lies in T 108 N and R. 10 W. It is bounded on the north an d west by Wabasha County, on the east by Mt. Vernon township, and on the south by Elba Township. Whitewater lies in the extreme northwestern corner of Winona County. There are two principal valleys-- Whitewater valley and Beaver creek valley. Whitewater valley is six miles long, and runs directly north and south through the township. It is traversed by the Whitewater river, which enters the townshi on Sec. 35 and leaves it on Sec. 1 This river attains an average width of forty feet and a depth of three feet. . .Timber is abundant along the valleys, and trout plentiful in the streams.' (Ibid). 10 Feb 1857 -- Aurilla Putnam, for $214, buys from her brother Pliny Putnam 'all that part of the North West quarter of Section No. 1 which lis in the East Side of the White Water River, the middle of the said stream being the boundry line' 18 May 1857 -- Indenture between Oliver & Aurilla Porter and Dr. Sheldon Brooks (medical doctor in Beaver, Whitewater Twnshp, Winona County., Minn.) for $200.00 secured by mortgage of N.W. Quarter, Sec. 1, Township 108 Range 10, 'which lies on the East side of the White Water.' The mortgage was 'fully paid and satisfied this 9th day of October, 1876,' 'See Book 28 of Mtgs., 442'--paid not by O.D. Porter, but by Gordon Town, who bought the property from O.D. Porter in 1863 (see 15 Dec 1863, below). 30 May 1857. For $308, Aurilla Porter buys from Warren Blinn 'the South East quarter of the South West Quarter of Section No. One, Town No. 108N, R 10 W.' 19 Sep 1857 -- Indenture between Oliver & Aurilla Porter and F. C. Gibbs. Gibbs loaned Porter $100.00 secured by indenture of 40 acres of land, Town 108 N of Range No 10 W. . .the SE Quarter of South West Quarter of Sec No One. Indenture not repaid?? 1867 map of Winona County show that Gibbs owned the property at that date. 1858 - Methodist Episcopal congregation organized in Beaver Village, Whitewater Township, Minn; 'they at that time held their meetings in the schoolhouse; the prominent members were Pliney Putnam, Elder P. Richardson, and George Stoning; the first minister was Elder Wm. Sweet, now residing in Norton Township. . . (History of Winona County).See above, 18 May 1857. 1867 -- Map of Winona County shows a 'Porter' owning property in Mt. Vernon Township, the north west quarter of the north east quarter of section 6, Mt. The sale noted that the mortgage of $200, (assumed by Gordon Town) was now 'past due.' on 15 December 1863 at Mount Vernon, Winona County, Minnesota.2 She and Rev Oliver Davis Porter appeared on the census of 1865 at Mount Vernon Township, Winona County, Minnesota; 'We did find the C.D. [sic] and Aurila [sic] Porter family in the Minnesota State Census of 1865. The family was then residing in Mount Vernon Township, Winona County, Minn. One member, Josiah, is shown as being in military service. The 1865 Census shows only names and sex. Age and relationship are not shown' Letter 1/12/66 from Fred Thibodeau, Deputy State Archivist, State of Minnesota, State Archives and Records Service.2 Aurilla Putnam died on 6 October 1865 at Mount Vernon Township, Winona County, Minnesota, at age 58; "Aurilla Porter Died at Mt Vernon Minn October 6th 1865 aged 59 years 4 months and 23 days" Rolph Jacob O Family Biblle.1 She 'Aurilla Porter died. at Mt. Vernon, Minn..Oct 6, 1865, Aged 59 years, 4 moonths, and 23 days' (Rolph Family Bible. Genealogy Tables). This would make her born on June 13, 1806. History of the Putnam Family says b. 14 May, 1807, in Royalston, Vt. (but could this be Royalston, Mass.?-- 1850 census says she was born in MASS) Maybe born in Mass, then moved young to Royalton, Windsor County, VT? If so, did Cap. Daniel and Keziah Putnam die in Vermont? At least Capt. Daniel did, acc to History of the Putnam Family. The Illustrated History of Klickitat, Yakima, and Kittitas Counties, Wash., says she is a 'direct descendant of Israel Putnam, of Revolutionary War fame,' but this is not the case. For the last number of years of her life, Aurilla Porter was sick, and spent much of her money on doctors (see the indentures above). About a year before she died, she composed this poem, entitled, 'Ode to An Old Clock' (given to Gary Rolph by Velma Stoll) Take care of that old clock, Which, twenty years, proved true. For cold, it neer refused to work, Nor for a wind that blew. 'Twas by a worn line, The striking part was broke, But it continued counting time, And not a murmur spoke. Protect that mirror door, Which is so large and true, If I could have that glass once more, I'd gladly give you two 'Tis time, a thoughtless boy, Did that old glass deface, It has been done ten years and more, But still it keeps its place. Alas! that dear old clock, At length became despised, A new, and fancy one, was bought,- And very highly prized, For it could sound alarm, To rouse us, any hour, But soon the sleepers, slumber'd on, Regardless of its roar. But it began to fail, Before one year was gone, We could not make it strike at all, Methinks 'twill son be done, From it, a lesson learn, That worldly vanity, Will make a wondrous show, and sound, But quickly die away. Be careful of that clock, It must wear out, in time. May you, from it, a pattern take, To let the virtue shine. I loved that dear old clock, I prized its company, In suffering, sickness, mightyly dark, It seem'd light to me. Yes many weary nights, Whilst sick, in bed I lay, And listen'd to that dear old clock, Which, to me seem'd to say If you, a few more years, Prove faithful to your God, You'll change this world of pain and tears, For His secure abode. Composed Oct. 22, 1864, by Aurilla Putnam Porter.2
