Joseph Brown was born in 1729 at Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.1 He married Mary Greeley, daughter of Moses Greele and Mehitable Page, on 22 September 1768 at Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.1 Joseph Brown died in 1819 at Industry, Franklin County, Maine; He and Nathaniel Davis moved from Winthrop ME tothe uninhabited wilderness (now Farmington ME) in May 1781. Their wives were the first females who movedinto the town. Their first abiding place was a temporary camp, which had to answer their purpose until he could build a more substantial home. He built his first house on the intervale, where it was surrounded by water to a considerable depth in the great freshet of 1785, when the family had to make their escape in a canoe in the darkness of night. After this he built another log house on the upland. He put up the first frame barn in the upper part of the town about 1787, the board of which were fastened on by pegs. He was a soldier in the French war, in which he was made practically a cripple through life byh the lodgement of a ball in his leg, which was never extracted. He removed to Industry ME about 1796.1
