Frank Ripley Brown, Sr., 91, of Charlotte died at Asbury Care on Wednesday, December 29, 2004. Funeral service for Mr. Brown will be held at Dilworth United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 2, 2005 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall at the church. Interment with military honors will be in Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery on Monday, January 3, at 11:00 AM.
Mr. Brown was born November 24, 1913, in Nantucket, MA, son of the late Herbert L. and Annie Nickerson Brown. Frank was retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Lt. Colonel having served in World War II and during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of Dilworth United Methodist Church and the Charles P. Bowles Sunday School Class.Mr. Brown was also retired from WBT Radio where he was employed as a transmitter engineer. Frank enjoyed a variety of activities and hobbies that included golf, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, and making Nantucket Lightship Baskets.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Rena Morgan Brown of Charlotte; son, Frank R. Brown, Jr. and his wife, Ada of Winterville, NC; daughters, Anne C. Gardener and her husband, Bruce of Pacifica, CA. and Betsy Brown and her friend, Kirk Johnson of Asheville, NC; sister, Mrs. Helen B. Olcott of Martha's Vineyard; grandson, Morgan Brown and granddaughter, Emilia Brown of Winterville, NC and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Charles P. Bowles Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Dilworth United Methodist Church, 605 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203.

Eugene Debs Horner, 31, a former businessman of Mounds, died at the Anna State Hospital, Friday afternoon, January 23, at 2 o’clock, following a nervous breakdown which occurred some two years ago. Gene, as he was familiarly called, was born at Wetaug, Ill., December 13, 1899. He lived in Wetaug until about 18 years of age, when he came with his parents to Mounds to reside.
For 13 years he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in the capacity of brakeman. After the service rendered for the above railroad he entered into business for himself and continued therein until his health broke down.
About eight months ago he confessed Christ as his personal Savior thus preparing for his exit from the scenes of this immortal life.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and of the order of B. P. O. Elks. He leaves to mourn his departure his mother, Mrs. Hattie Horner; three brothers, Dillard, Claude, and Joe, all of Mounds; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Cockrum, of Christopher, Ill., and Mrs. Mildred Jones, of Mounds. Gene’s death will also be mourned by a large number of other relatives and friends.
The body was brought to the home of his mother in this city and by Undertaker G. A. James. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Mt. Pisgah Church, Wetaug, the Rev. H. B. Shoaff officiating. Interment was made in the Wetaug cemetery.

For 13 years he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in the capacity of brakeman. After the service rendered for the above railroad he entered into business for himself and continued therein until his health broke down.
About eight months ago he confessed Christ as his personal Savior thus preparing for his exit from the scenes of this immortal life.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and of the order of B. P. O. Elks. He leaves to mourn his departure his mother, Mrs. Hattie Horner; three brothers, Dillard, Claude, and Joe, all of Mounds; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Cockrum, of Christopher, Ill., and Mrs. Mildred Jones, of Mounds. Gene’s death will also be mourned by a large number of other relatives and friends.
The body was brought to the home of his mother in this city and by Undertaker G. A. James. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Mt. Pisgah Church, Wetaug, the Rev. H. B. Shoaff officiating. Interment was made in the Wetaug cemetery.
(Daniel Horner married Hattie P. Lentz on 1 Jan 1889, in Pulaski Co., Ill. His marker in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery near Wetaug reads: Eugene Debbs Horner Born Dec. 13, 1899 Died Jan. 23, 1931 Aged 31 Yrs., 1 Mo., & 10 Ds.—Darrel Dexter).1,2 He married Josie Mae Martin on 1 August 1937 at Charleston, Mississippi County, Missouri.1 Delbert Joseph Horner died on 22 January 1957 at Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois, at age 46.1
