Andrew Cruse was born on 24 August 1822 at Rowan County, North Carolina.1,2 He married Elizabeth "Eliza" Iseralda Gray on 16 January 1849 at Rusk County, Texas.3 Andrew Cruse died on 25 March 1907 at Flower Mound, Denton County, Texas, at age 84; Andy Cruse was born in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1823, the fourth child of a family of six children. His parents, Phillip and Mary Cruse, moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1826. His father was of German descent and was a blacksmith by trade at which he worked all his life. At the age of twenty two, he and several friends left Tennessee in 1845 and headed for Texas. Their journey was made on horseback. When they reached the Texas border in Bowie County, two of the individuals decided Texas was not what they wanted. They returned to Tennessee by following the route they used in their journey south. The four individuals remaining in the party continued on by following the trail of a group of missionaries travelling a few days ahead of them. Their route went south along what is now Cedar Springs in Dallas and eventually they crossed the Brazos River. On their journey they had seen the old Cedar Pole Courthouse at Bonham and recalled killing deer and buffalo for food. Farther south, they saw the capital of Texas in disrepair and evidence of an Indian attack two years earlier. Andy was present for the ceremony of Texas becoming a state. In late 1846, he went to Rusk County and opened a blacksmith shop. He married Eliza Gray on 1-16-1849 in Rusk County. In 1860 he and Eliza moved to Flower Mound and opened a blacksmith shop. Andy (1823-1908) and Eliza (1826-1911) are interred in Flower Mound Cemetery. Their daughter, Modena, married Jesse Howard Crawford.
