Mark Shulse was also known as Mark Shults.2 He was born say 1760 at Rowan County, North Carolina; Note on Ancestry posted by pjroots:
He is calculated to be born before 1763... Mark Shults is in several land records involving the Sears family. There is another young Mark Shults from Rowan County, North Carolina who marries a Christina and moves later to Missouri so care has to be made to separate the two. No trail of them has been found after Rowan County. It is possible that Peter Shulse of Bourbon County is Mark Peter Shulse as Shulse researchers have said but no records have been found to figure this out.1 He married Barbara Sears, daughter of John Sears and first wife ?, say 1780 at Rowan County, North Carolina.1 Mark Shulse died between 1801 and 1850 at Indiana; "Barbara Sears is in a court record of her father in Muhlenburg County, Kentucky married to Mark Shults (Shulse family lived next to Johannes Zaher in Rowan County so assumed misspelt). In 1850 in Edgar County, Illinois page 154 age 88 and 1860 Edgar County, Illinois age 96 pg 613 say she was born in Maryland.1 [1] She married Mathias Hunsinger in 1782 at Unwharrie Creek, Rowan County, North Carolina.1 As of circa 1783,her married name was Hunsinger.1 They resided at Kentucky between 1788 and 1805. Mathias and Mary sold their land in Rowan Co 1 May 1788 and were in Fayette Co KY by 1 Dec 1788. They were in Clark Co KY by 1 Jun 1794, then in Shelby Co KY by 1796 (dau Mary "Polly" Vaught lised Shelby County as her birthplace in the 1850 census of Edgar Co. A uniu feature of the 1850 census of Edgar Co IL is that it listed county as well as state of birth; the only instance of this I've ever come across). They're listed in Clark Co 10 Oct 1796.      Matthias Hunsinger Story

Mathias Hunzinger (Hunsinger / Huntzinger / Hunsinger) was bap. 22 Nov. 1759 , son of Mathias Sr. and Carolina, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Holland, Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., Penn. His brothers Johan George bap. 1 Nov. 1761 and Jacob bap. 21 Oct. 1764. Between 1764 and 1768 the family migrated to Rowan Co., NC. and settled on Unwharrie Creek. Mathias Sr. is listed there in the 1768 tax list. The family must have converted to the German Baptist Brethern (Dunkards) in that 1764-1768 period. Mathias Sr. is found on a 1772 tax list for that area for the year 1771. There is no indication of any other surviving sons of Mathias Sr. and Carolina apart from Mathias Jr. and Jacob in the area of Rowan Co. There may have been daughters but the tradition in both the lines of Mathias Jr. and Jacob mention only these 2 brothers. Both lines had the tradition that the 2 brothers immigrated from Europe: Mathias Jr.'s line said "Germany" and Jacob's line said "Holland". I think Mathias father and son were confused and the Holland in Jacob's line was a confusion with New Holland, Lancaster Co. Jacob's line retained the tradition that the 2 brothers were sons of a Mathias. This family needs more research but it is likely that Mathias Sr. was the immigrant, possibly a young married man bringing his bride Carolina to America. Mathias Sr. almost certainly was dead by 1790. Mary Sears was born in 1762 in Frederick Co., Md. (age 88 b. Md.in 1850 census in Elbridge Twp., Edgar Co., Ill. with son-in-law John Vaught and dau. Mary "Polly" Hunsinger) or 1764 (age 96 b. Md. with Joseph and Elizabeth King in White Co., Ill. in 1860; relationship unknown), the eldest surviving child of Johannes Zaher (John Sears) and 2nd. wife Barbara Miller. I take the 1762 date as I have found in my 40 years+ of research that ages in earlier records tend to be more accurate. She met and married Mathias Hunsinger probably in 1782 on Unwharrie Creek, Rowan Co., North Carolina. Mathias and Mary sold their land in Rowan Co. 1 May 1788 and were in Fayette Co., Ky. by 1 Dec. 1788. They were in Clark co., Ky. by 1 June 1794, then in Shelby Co., Ky. by 1796 ( dau. Mary "Polly" Vaught listed Shelby Co. as her birthplace in the 1850 census of Edgar Co. A unique feature of the 1850 census of Edgar Co., Ill. is that it listed county as well as state of birth; the only instance of this I've ever come across.) They're listed in Clark Co. 10 Oct. 1796. By 27 June 1799 they're on the tax list for Muhlenberg Co., Ky. Mary Hunsinger is listed as one of the founding members of the Nelson Creek Bapist Church in Muhlenberg Co. 10 June 1803. Mathias is not listed. This was a Regular Baptist Church (meaning an English Baptist, not German Baptist Brethern). All of the other names are English and Scots. The major difference between the German Baptist Brethern and the English Baptist is that the English Baptist were not pacifists. Did Mary disagree with pacifism ? This is a very interesting event in the history of Mary and Mathias Mathias died in Muhlenberg Co., Ky. 21 Nov. 1805. Appraisers for the estate were his wife's brother-in-law William Imbler (husband of Mary's sister Frances), Isaac Davis and Samuel Small. Mary remarried Charles Grigsby, a neighbor of theirs on Cypress Creek, Muhlenberg Co., Ky. probably 1806-1807 (last record for Mary as Hunsinger is the 1806 tax list in Muhlenberg Co.) They purchased land in White Co., Ill. in 1821 but I doubt Charles ever lived there. Charles and Mary were still living in Muhlenberg Co., Ky. 1827 when they sold land there. Charles died 1827-1830. Mary probably went to White Co. shortly after Charles' death and lived with one of her children there. Mary (Sears) Hunsinger Grigsby died 21 Aug. 1861 in White Co., Ill. at the age of 99. Children of Mathias and Mary (Sears) Hunsinger: (Listed in loose pages in the Bible of Ezekial Hunsinger (1826-1908) of White Co., Ill., s/o Adam and grandson of Mathias and Mary. 11 children listed plus "4 others names unkown" ,believed to be children who died in infancy.): 1) Jacob b. 31 Mar. 1783-Rowan Co., NC; mar. After Micajah's death in the 1870's she went to live with her son-in-law and dau. Charles and Mary Anne (Hunsaker) Reeves in Arthur, Douglas Co., Ill. where she died 8 Oct. 1884, aged 82. Sally was buried at New Providence Presbyterian Church Cem., Elbridge Twp., Edgar Co., Ill. next to her first husband Ben Hunsaker. Benjamin Franklin Hunsaker was born 6 Dec. 1795 in Springhill Twp., Fayette Co., Penn. son of George and Susannah (Moser) Hunsaker, grandson of John and Magdalena (Beery) Hunsaker, great-grandson of Hartmann and Anna Hunziker, German-Swiss Mennonites and natives of Katzbach, near Aarau, Canton Bern (after 1803 Canton Aargau), Switzerland. Expelled from Canton Bern in 1728, they went to Weisbaden in the Rhineland of Germany; expelled from there they went to Rotterdam, Holland in 1730. The Rotterdam Mennonite Relief Committee helped Hartmann and Anna and their 7 children-6 daughters and only son Johannes (Hannes/ John)- to immigrate to America, landing in Philadelphia aboard the "Pennsylvania Merchant" 10 Sept. 1731. In 1796 Benjamin's widowed grandfather John led 4 married sons and 1 married dau. and families and 2 unmar. sons down the Ohio River on flatboats to Muhlenberg Co., Ky. from Fayette Co., Penn. Most of the family migrated to Union Co., Ill. c. 1805-1810 but Benjamin's parents George and Susannah and family remained in Muhlenebrg Co., Ky., until 1828 when they with son Benjamin and Sarah and family, a married dau. and family and 2 single sons and 1 single dau. (all but eldest son John and family) migrated to Elbridge Twp. Edgar Co., Ill. Benjamin Franklin Hunsaker died 9 Mar. 1855 in Elbridge Twp., Edgar Co., Ill., bur. The list ends note "4 others not remembe.1 He was baptized on 22 November 1759 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Holland, Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; son of Mathias Sr and Carolina.1 He was a church member between 1764 and 1768 at Rowan County, North Carolina; "The family must have converted to the German Baptist Brethren (Dunkards) in that 1764-1768 period."1 He married Mary Sears, daughter of John Sears and Barbara Miller, in 1782 at Unwharrie Creek, Rowan County, North Carolina.1 They resided at Kentucky between 1788 and 1805. By 27 Jun 1799 they're on the tax list for Muhlenburg Co KY.".1 Mathias died on 21 November 1805 at Muhlenburg County, Kentucky.1
