During the Civil War, Tobias Brown was under contract with the Confederate States of America to grind into superfine grade flour all the wheat that was sent to him by Capt A Myes and other authorized parties. Lewis Tobias was b in the house of his grandfather Abraham Brown and he lived there until his marriage on Nov 4 1844 [sic] to Phebe Arey. An announcement of their marriage appeared in the Western Carolinian on Nov 13 1844. They moved to Iredell County where they made their home on the Catawba River near East Monbo. This unusual name is derived from "Mount Beau" meaning beautiful mountain. Monbo was on the Catawba County side of the Catawba River, and East Monbo on the Iredell Cty side. Tobias, like his father and grandfather, was a miller. Tax records show that by 1850 he owned the grist mill which since 1800 had been the property of John Cavin. This mill had the distinction of being the second mill built in Iredell County Over the years a saw mill and a woool carding machine were added. During the Civil War, Tobias Brown was under contract with the Confederate States of America to grind into superfine grade flour all the wheat that was sent to him by Capt A Myes and other authorized parties. This grinding was to be done in preference to other grinding. The Quartermaster DEpartment agreed to pay $2.75 per barrel for each barrel of flour ground under the contract. For an additional fee, Tobias was to "haul all the tax wheat from Troutman's depot and from Christy Clark's to his mill and to deliver all the flour and offal at Troutman's Depot." It is little wonder that the Yankees tried to burn Brown's mill during the war. Their attempt was thwarted, however, when the Catawba River flooded and they were unable to cross and carry out their plan."
