Part II–The Morgan Family
The particular Morgan family presented in this book descends from Morgan ap Rhydderch ap Dafydd ap Grufydd of Wales in southwest Great Britain, who lived during the 1600s.
[i] The Welsh naming practice at that time was patronymic, which meant a child’s surname was the father’s given name, with “ap” or “ab” meaning “son of.” The conversion to fixed surnames began with the upper classes, working downwards and was more common along the border with England, moving westward. By 1850, most Welsh people had adopted a family surname. The children of Morgan ap Rhydderch began immigrating to Pennsylvania around 1700, and they took the name of “Morgan” as their surname at that time. They left Wales and the still fresh memory of the harsh religious persecution for William Penn’s Commonwealth and the liberty they sought.

[ii[:UND]]
Little is known of the ancestry of Morgan ap Rhydderch other than what is given in his name: Morgan ap Rhydderch ap Dafydd ap Grufydd. Therefore, in the first generation, Grufydd was the father of Dafydd.
In the second generation, Dafydd ap Gruffyd, who was the author of several books, was the father of Rhydderch. There is a possibility that Dafydd was also the father of Iago ap Dewi, also known as James ap David, who was a poet and distinguished translator.[iii] Born in 1644, Iago was a native of Llandyssul in Cardiganshire, Wales, lived for many years in Pencader and died in 1722 in Llanllawddog, Carmarthenshire.[iv] (However, Iago’s birth in 1644 makes it suspicious he was a brother of Rhydderch, who had a son born in 1620, making Iago 24 years younger than his nephew.)3,1 He married wife ? say 1624 at Wales.3 Morgan ap Rhydderch ap Dafydd ap Grufydd died between 1626 and 1690 at Glamorganshire, Wales.3

Chapter 10–Morgan ap Rhydderch
The date and place of birth for Morgan ap Rhydderch are not known, but since his brother Rhees was born in 1620 in Llanwenog, Cardiganshire, Wales, Morgan may have been born in the same place, possibly between 1620 and 1630.
In 1662 the Act of Uniformity was passed by the English Parliament during the reign of Charles II. It required the use of all the rites and ceremonies of the Book of Common Prayer in all Church of England services and Episcopalian ordination of all ministers. This resulted in the Great Ejection in which 2000 clergymen left the established church. Morgan was one of those persecuted when ordered by the king’s officers not to preach. However, he persevered for twenty years until his death.
In 1667, he was baptized at Rhydwilim, one year before the Baptist church was formed there. Rhydwilim was the closest Baptist center to him. It was situated in a beautiful valley on the bank of the Eastern Cleddau River in Pembrokeshire, Wales, southwest of Cardiganshire. Rhydwilim means “William’s Ford” and got its name from the ford in the river at that spot. The site was chosen for its remoteness during the time of religious persecution. The day after the church was organized in 1668, Morgan was set aside as a deacon, and in 1669 he was ordained a deacon. Shortly thereafter, he began preaching as an assistant preacher, but not as an ordained preacher.[i]1,2
" He married Jane ? circa 1670 at Cardiganshire, Wales.2 Morgan Ap Rhydderg died circa 1680 at Wales; "Morgan died around 1680, leaving Jane with four children under the age of ten. Though he left his children prematurely, he instilled in them a strong Baptist faith, as described in their ensuing biographical sketches."2
