Elisha Cox1

M, b. say 1786, d. 1832
Elisha Cox was born say 1786 at Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont; 1810 census says he was 16 through 25, born between 1785 and 1794. Based on his marriage, I have guessed the earlier date (Gary Rolph Jan 2014)
son of William Cox and Beulah Batt
--
"William Cox was a native of MA the exact place of his birth is not known. He resided some years in Waltham, from which town he enlisted as a soldier in the French war, and was a member of the company commanded by Capt John Brown. The good qualities he displayed as a soldier secured his promotion and he was soon appointed lieutenant of the company, in which capacity he served at Lake George in 1758. After the expiration of his service he returned to Waltham where he married Beulah Batt, a Dutch lady, Nov 29, 1759. In that town three children were born to them, viz. Sarah, Betsey, and Beulah. In 1772 Mr. Cox came to Pittsfor and bought of Moses Hill one right of land which he located on the east side of Otter Creek. It included the farm now owned by Junia Sargent, with some other lands in that vicinity. The deed of this purchase was dated April 1 1772. He cleared the land and bult a house on the east bank of the Creek, near the most easterly point of a short curve in the streatm, and the house stood within four or five rods of the water. The following winter he spent with his family in Waltham, but in the spring of 1773, with his wife and children, he set out on horseback for th place in the wilderness which he had selected as his future home. The limited supply of clothing and furniture belonging to the family was packed upon the horses, and in this manner they proceeed on their journey , being guided some part of the distance by marked trees." p 3-40 (55-56 of 804).1,2 He married Abigail Clifford at Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont, on 6 March 1806.1,3,4 Elisha Cox was made freeman on 2 September 1806 at Pittsford, Rutland County, Vermont, Sept 2 1806 List of persons admittd and qualified as freemen as the law directs. . .Elisha Cox" VT Pilltsford History p. 334 (360 of 804.)5 Elisha was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census at Pitsford, Rutland County, Vermont, The official enumeration day of gth 1810 census was 6 Aug 1810. Based on the inclusion of 1 daughter under 10, I suspect the actual enumeration day was say 1 October 1810 - Gary Rolph Jan 2014
