Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory
Gerald “Jerry” Francis Henry of Selah passed away July 6, 2017 at Garden Village. Gerald was born in Tacoma, Washington on August 6, 1939. His family later moved to Richland, Washington, where he attended high school. After living in Richland, he found his forever home in Selah, Washington.
Gerald, who preferred to be called Jerry, was married for 28 years to Gerry Henry, “Jerry and Gerry” as they are known in the Selah community. Jerry had such a beautiful love for his wife; you could just see it in his eyes every time he looked at her. Their love for each other was undeniable.
Jerry had a love for the Selah community, for 30 years he worked with Selah Community Days and built the Selah Float. That float was his pride and joy and even in his final days he would still talk about his days building the float with his wife.
Jerry was an active and proud Selah Kiwanian for many years. Jerry was always willing to help anyone in need, but usually he would tell you a joke beforehand. He loved to tell jokes, if you ran into him he always had a new one on hand. Jerry worked at Kwik Lok in Yakima until his retirement in 2010. While working for Kwik Lok he had the privilege of traveling the world. Jerry learned to speak several languages during his travels; everything came to him with such ease. Jerry always had a love for adventure, whether it was scuba diving, traveling, or eating exotic foods in different countries, he embraced life and lived it to the fullest. He did things most of us will only dream about.
His favorite moments were telling his grandkids stories of all the places he had been, or helping them with their homework and then correcting the teacher’s mistakes on the paperwork. Anyone who knew Jerry knows this was so him, he was very intelligent. When the grandkids were younger he would take them to the dump and then out for ice-cream. He loved his ice cream and chocolate.
In his younger years, he served his country in the Navy and was proud to be a veteran.
Jerry was the type of man that worked hard and never wanted any recognition for his efforts. His strength, courage and love for everyone always came shining through. When you had a problem, you could always go to him and he knew just what to do. Jerry will be missed by so many people.
He is survived by his wife Gerry Henry, a brother, Paul Henry, a sister, Helen Fa’amoe, 6 children: Miki Landis, Tami Wilson, Kevin Henry, Louis Seaman, Diane Frenzel and Kristi Lunning, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a new great grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orlan and Gertrude Henry, and a brother, Noel Henry.
Jerry will forever be in our hearts, never forgotten. His spirit, smile and laugh will live in our hearts forever!!

Ph.D. work done in India, dissertation on Agricultural land topography -- wind and rain soil cycle.1 He was DFBA54F0AA8C3B4FAF7BD4EEF82D188F5548.2 He was Episcopalian(?)1 He died on 21 April 2013 at Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, at age 81; Joel Max Andress, 81, of Newport, VT, died on April 21, 2013, while visiting his son and daughter-in-law in Clarkdale, AZ.

Joel was born July 1, 1931, in Bethlehem, PA, the son of Ruth and Joseph Andress. In 1988, he married Sunnie Andress and they celebrated 25 years together shortly before his death.

As a young boy, Joel’s family lived for ten years on the family farm in Beebe, Quebec where he had many happy times with his Canadian friends and with his Uncle and Aunt, Edwin and Eileen Earle, in Derby Line. After moving to Wellesley, MA he continued his schooling, graduating from Wellesley High School in 1949. Joel was a veteran of the Coast Guard, serving aboard the Nantucket Lightship and also on Wake Island. After his military service, he attended the University of the Pacific for his B.A. and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in geography from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Andress joined the Central Washington University faculty in 1966 and taught classes in cartography, climatology, Asian studies and geography.

After his retirement, Joel and Sunnie moved to Vermont…a state he loved and remembered fondly from childhood. He enjoyed being close once again to his Aunt Eileen and his much loved cousins, Nancy Earle, Lydia Bredemeier, Eileen Linzi and Peter Earle and their families. He had an extensive knowledge of family history and enjoyed sharing his memories with family and friends. He had a dry sense of humor and made a point of being a “Grandpa” who thought that each of his grandchildren and step-grandchildren should be a bit of a “scamp”…and that it was up to him to teach them.

Joel is survived by his wife, Sunnie Andress of Newport.
Also survived by his children, Peter Andress and his wife, Penny, Katy Fogg, Laura Andress, and Rebecca Reid and her husband, Ken and his grandchildren, Zachary Andress, Evelyn Reid and Duncan Reid. And survived by his brother-in law, Rev. Gary Rolph and his wife, Jean and three nephews, Matthew Rolph, Marcus Rolph and Micah Rolph and their families.

Donations in Joe’s memory may be sent to the Best Friends Animal Society at www.bestfriends.org.3 He was buried on 14 September 2013 at Quebec, Canada.3

Although her maternal grandfather was of Jewish descent, Gayle was raised in a Christian home by believing parents. Her ancestors included many Christian ministers, including some early ministers of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). After the death of her younger brother from typhoid fever, her family decided to relocate to California. They moved to a farm in the Dixieland near Madera, CA in 1919. She remembered singing special numbers with her father (who taught music) and sisters at church services in Madera. Gayle met her first husband, James 'Jimmy' Shirk, at the First Christian Church of Madera, CA. They were married in 1923 and had two daughters, Martha and Gleeda. Gayle and Jimmy both believed church to be an important part of their lives. They read their Bibles daily. Gayle was an active participant of the mission circle of all the churches she attended and served as a deaconness. Gayle and Jimmy moved to Tulare, CA when their two daughters were young and actively participated in the Tulare First Christian Church for over thirty years. (Jimmy's great uncle, Rev. A.W. Dewitt had helped found the Tulare Christian Church.) Gayle especially enjoyed singing in the church choir. After Jimmy retired from Tulare Union High School they moved to Santa Ana, California, in 1968 to work as resident caretakers of the Santa Ana Christian Church. In the early 1970's they moved to San Diego, California, where Jimmy died in 1977. As a widow Gayle found great comfort in her many church and senior center activities. God blessed Gayle in the mid 1980's with another wonderful Christian husband, Paul Marvin of La Mesa, California. Together they attended worship and other church functions, but also enjoyed visiting shut-ins and resthomes. They had time for some wonderful trips together to many places in the world. Gayle was talented at sewing and crotchet . She shared these talents with others all of her life. She was a dedicated Christian and churchgoer, a faithful tither to the church and supporter of missions. She is survived by her husband, Paul Marvin, of La Mesa, California two children, Martha May McMillin of Packwood, Washington and Gleeda Mary McAfee, Riverside, California 7 grandchildren 13 great grandchildren 3 great great grandchildren This eulogy was written by Linda Jean (McMillin) Rolph, eldest grandchild of Gayle and Jimmy Shirk. He was born near Waterman, Ind., Dec. 12, 1869, the youngest of four sons and the only one who is located in California. His father, Isaac Shirk, Sr., was also a native of Indiana, and was a farmer near Waterman; where he likewhise engaged in flat-boating on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. He died of cholera on his twenty-first trip betwen Wabash and New Orleans. His wife, formerly Sarah Williams, was a native of Illinois, and the daughter of Zechariah Williams, of Pennsylvania, who settled in Edgar County, Ill., and later became the pioneer hotel man in Newport, Indiana . Mrs. Shirk died in her home in Indiana. Isaac Shirk Jr. was reared on the paternal farm in Indiana, where he attended the district schools and assisted his mother i the home duties. After he attained his majority he became manager of the home place, which he conducted until 1878, when he went to Champaign county, Ill., for a period of two years and engaged as a farmer. He then located in Douglas County, Ill., where he remained until 1888, in which year he came to California. He spent a part of his first year in Napa county, when he came to Tulare county, and has since made this his permanent location. He purchased the present property, which consists of one hundred and twenty acres, at that time being all pasture land. He has made many improvements and now raises grain and alfalfa, and also devotes some time to stock raising. He is located within six miles of Visalia, his land is well improved and cultivated and his success as an agriculturist has given him a substantial position in the community in which he resides. In Woodville, Tulare county, Mr. Shirk married Laura DeWitt, a native of Douglas County, Ill., and a daughter of James DeWitt, who also came to California, where he died in this county. They are the parents of five children, namely William, Sarah, Hope, Anna and James. Mrs. Shirk is a member of the Christian church, to which Mr. Shirk gives liberal support. In his political convictions Mr. Shirk is a staunch Republican. --History of the State of California and Biographical Record of the San Joaquin Valley, California, by Prof. J. M. Guinn, A.M. The Chapman Publishing Co., Chicago 1905, page 1223. He Isaac Shirk Jr. never saw his father. His father Isaac Shirk Sr was a farmer near Waterman, Indiana and also engaged in flat-boating on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. He died of cholera on his twenty-first trip between Wabash and New Orleans. He was buried in New Orleans. (His son Isaac Jr. was born 3 months after his death). His body could not be brought back to Indiana because of the epidemic of cholera. Isaac Shirk Jr. attended school in Indiana and managed the home ranch with his mother until 1878 when he moved to Champaign County, Illinois for two years. He then moved to Douglas County, Illinois where he remained until 1888. Laura Louisa DeWitt was a native of Douglas County and was teaching school there when he met her. My father's cousin Will Shirk and his wife Vera and daughter Harriet, a school teacher visited us from Kingman, Indiana. He was the son of David Shirk. I remember that they said that Isaac had followed the school teacher to California. For many years my grandmother shirk (Laura) and mother (Hazel Shirk) corresponded with Vera and Will Shirk. My mother and father visited them in Indiana in the fall of 1952 or 1953.
