     Richard Puttenham was also known as Richard Putnam.1 He was born circa 1490 at Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire, England.1 He was w.p. 26 Feb 1556-7.2 Richard Puttenham was also known as Richard Puttenham of Slapton and Woughton.3 He was born circa 1500 at Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire, England.1 He lived; England.2 He married Joan ? in 1514 at England.1 Richard Puttenham died on 12 December 1556 at Woughton, Hertfordshire, England.2 Richard died between 12 December 1556 and 25 February 1557 at Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England. Or 26 Feb 1556 in Yardley, Worcestershire, England;
He was in Slapton, Bucks in 1528. HIs wife was named Joan. He wrote his will on Dec 12 1556 and it was proved on Feb 25 1556/7., He is buried in the churchyard in Woughton.
IN the subsidy rolls of 1523-24 the name is clearly written "Putnam" in 1538-39 he acqired by an indenture lands and messuages iin Slapton whih had previously belonged to the Abbey of Barking. His name appears on the Coram Rege Roll of 1517 as of Slapton (Michls 8 Henry VIII) and on the same roll is Nicholas Putnam as of Edlesborough..1 He was buried at church yard in, Woughton, England.2 He 'Richard Putnam of Woughton on the Green by his will, dated 12 Dec 1556, proved 26 Feb 1556/7, devised his houe in Slapton 'to Joan my wife for life, with remainder to John my son.' He also leaves a legacy to his son John and the latter's wife and their children. He further names his son Harry and his daughter Joan. The executor and residuary legatee was his son Harry Putnam (i.e. the Harry Putnam of Woughton on the Green, whose will dated 13 July 1579 was proved 3 Oct 1579, Arch Bucks, Filed Will) and the overseers were 'John Putnam my son' and Richard Brinclow (Arch Bucks, Bk. 1556-7, fo. 35). There can be no doubt but that John, son of Richard of Woughton, is identical with John Putnam of Rowsham the testator of 1573. That the estate in Slapton was settled by the latter, before his death, on his eldest son, John, who died testate as of Slapton in 1595. This evidence enables us to state that Richard Putnam of Woughton on the Green who died in 1556-7 was the father of John Putnam of Rowsham, who died in 1573, and who in turn was the father of Nicholas Putnam of Wingrave and Stewkley, whose son John of Aston Abbots emigrated to Salem, MA in 1640.' G. Andrews Moriarty, 'The English Ancestry of John Putnam of Salem, MA' American Genealogist, 15;10. 'Major Putnam [in his Putnam Genealogy 1892] proceeded to make Richard of Woughton the son of Henry Puttenham, who was a younger son of Nicholas Putenham of Penn, co Bucks, who was in turn a second son of William Putenham of Putenham, Esquire, the he d of the ancient and knightly house of Putenham. Major Putnam more than thirty years ago admitted to the writer of this article that he had no scrap of evidence to prove that Richard was the son of Henry beyond the occurence of the common names of Nicholas and Henry in both the Penn and Woughton families. Here the matter rested until last year, when A. Vere Woodman, Esq., of Wing, co. Bucks, a descendant of the Buckinghamshire Putenhams, and a keen local genealogist, and Frederick G. Gurney, Esq., a distinguished Bucks antiquary, became interested in the problem. Thanks to their efforts we are now able to show the probable descent of Richard Putnam of Woughton from the ancient lords of Putenham.' G. Andrews Moriarty, 'The English Ancestry of John Putnam of Salem, MA' American Genealogist 15;10. 'Both Mr. Gurney and Mr. Woodman from their knowledge of local conditions are of the opinion that the logical place of origin for Richard Putnam of Woughton was in Edlesborough, which is hard by Woughton. Slapton, where Richard owned lands, adjoins dlesborough. John Putnam of Slapton, the testator of 1594/.5, son of John Putnam of Rowsham and grandson of Richard of Woughton, owned land in Edlesborough at Northall. It should also be noted that Traymor Smyth of Edlesborough was the supervisor of the will of Thomas Putnam of Rowsham (son of John of Rowsham) in 1576, and one of the witneses of the will of Thomas Putnam of Edlesborough in 1575' Ibid, p. 11 'There can be small doubt that Richard of Slapton and Woughton , the testator of 1556, was a younger brother of the father of Richard of Toternhoo and of John Putnam of Slapton and Edlesborough and that he belonged to the Edlesborough Putnams, who we e a cadet branch of the Putenhams of Putenham.' Ibid., p. 11-12. 'The English Ancestry of John Putnam of Salem, MA' by G. Andrews Moriarty, Vol. 23, pp. 93-95. 'Reflecting to my article upon the English ancestry of John Putnam, which appeared in the American Genealogist for July 1938, pp. 8-15, I have recently received certain additional records from A. Vere Woodman, Esq., of Wings, Bucks, which enable me to make certain additions to the pedigree there given. After eight years of reflection I am convinced that the descend there given is substantially correct and Mr. Woodman agrees with me that the ancestry of the Wingrave Putnams must be sought in Eddlesboro and that my pedigree is substantially correct. If one will examine the map of Buckinghamshire it will be seen that Slapton adjoins Northall, a hamlet in Eddleboro; Woughton is 11 1/4 miles NW of Slapton and Wingrave is 4 1/4 miles from Slapton W by S; Rownsham is a hamlet in Wingrave 1 1/2 miles W. by S. of Wingrave proper; Puttenham is 6 miles SW of Eddlesboro, 5 miles SSW of Slapton and 2 1/2 miles S of Wingrave; Totenhoe is a hamlet in Leighton Buzzard 1 3/4 miles NE of and adjoining Eddlesboro; Long Marston is a hamlet in Tring 3/4 of a mile NE of and adjoining Puttenham and Aston Abbot adjoins Rowsham and is 1 1/2 miles to the N. It will thus be seen that the places associated with the immediate ancestors of John Putnam all lie hard by Eddlesboro, while Penn, whence Major Putnam deduced them, lies in another part of the county.' 'In the subsidy of 1524 John was of Slapton and Mr. Woodman suggests that at this time his brother Richard was probably living with him. In the subsidy of 1549 John had returned to Eddlesboro, while Richad remained in Slapton and Woughton.' Ibid. Richard not son of Henry Putnam 'of Edelsborough,' as Eben Putnam thought. 'of Edlesborough in 1524, and Woughton, Herts., Eng.2'

     Nicholas Putnam was also known as Nicholas Putynham.2 He was born circa 1478 at England; Putnam Genealogy says "eldest son."1 He was born circa 1480 at Edlesborough, England.2 Nicholas Putnam was also known as Nicholas Puttenham of Eddlesborough.3 He 'Nicholas Putnam, of Penn, Bucks, who was named in his father's will, and in the Bucks Visitations (see Eben Putnam's 'Putnam Family' and references therein). He had, by his wife, whose name has not been preserved John, named in the Herald's Visitation Pedigree and Henry Putnam (of Eddlesborough, 1526), named in the will of his brother, in 1526. He probably died intestate, having issue, by his wife, name unknown Richard Putnam, who removed from Eddlesborough to Woughton; will dated in 1556.' History of the Putnam Family, p. cliii. This disagrees in several respects with the later Putnam Pedigree. Nicholas may have been the father of Richard -- see under Richard, son of Richard of Woughton and Slapton. The other two children, John and Harry, are actually nephews, sons of Richard of Woughton and Slapton. 'The English Ancestry of John Putnam of Salem Ma' G. Andrews Moriarty, Am Genealogist, 23; 94 'In 1511 Nicholas Putnam, gentleman, sued Thomas a Dene of Dagnall for trespass, in that on 16 April 1510 the said Thomas broke into his close at Dagnall and took away four horses worth five marks. Thomas denies the injury, because the trespass was supposed to take place in a pasture containing 30 acres called Bloxes Croft in Dagnall, whereof the said Nicholas was seized and which he held of Thomas Lucy, Thomas Cavendish and John Smith by rent of 17/6 per annum. And because the rent was 52/6 in arrears the said Thomas a Dene, as their servant, entered the said close and took the said horses by way of distraint. Nicholas says that long before the trespass he was seized of the said 30 acres of pasture called Bloxes Croft and other 30 acres of land in Dagnall by rent of a head of a gillyflower and not by a rent of 17/6. (DeBanco Roll 997, Mich 3 Hen VIII, m. 53). (Lucy, Cavendish and Smith were the heirs of Brecknok). This is an important record as it proves taht Nicholas was the eldest son and heir of John Puttenham of Eddlesboro, who held this land of John Brecknok in 1476 and so we get the name, hitherto unknown, of the father of Richard of Toternhoo, the testator of 1530, and the brother of John and Richard Puttenham, the latter the ancestor of the American family.. . .In 1517 Nicholas Puttenham of Eddlesboro and Richard Puttenham of Slapton were associated together in a riot. Reference to be sent later. This Richard may be Richard of Woughton, brother of Nicholas, or Richard (d.s.p. 1530), the son of Nicholas. This Nicholas Puttenham of Eddlesboro is not identical with the Nicholas Puttenham of Penn from whom Major Eben Putnam derived the American family, because in 1606 Margaret, widow of Nicholas, held lands in Penne (Common Pleas, Deed enrolled 976, m. 3d).2 He married Mrs Nicholas ? circa 1500 at England.1 Nicholas Putnam died between 1516 and 1530 at England; does not appear to be alive when son Richard makes will in 1530;
The eldest son Nicholas Puttenham, gentleman, sues Thomas a Dene for trespass in hnis close at Dagnall 1511 (De Banco Roll 997, IVich 3 Henry VIII m. 53). The Sheriff ordered to arrest Nicholas Putnam, gent. and others for certain trespasses 1516 (Coram FRege Roll KB 27 Mich 8 Hen VIII).1 He witnessed Richard Puttenham's death at Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England, between 12 December 1556 and 25 February 1557. Or 26 Feb 1556 in Yardley, Worcestershire, England;
He was in Slapton, Bucks in 1528. HIs wife was named Joan. He wrote his will on Dec 12 1556 and it was proved on Feb 25 1556/7., He is buried in the churchyard in Woughton.

will dated 14 Nov 1573[?].1 He was buried on 2 October 1573 at Rowsham and Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England.2 He Named in Herald's Visitation Pedigree. History of the Putnam Family, p. cliii, has John's brother, Henry Putnam (of Eddlesborough, 1526) as the father of Richard Putnam. 'John Putnam. . .in his will dated 19 Sep 1573, proved 14 Nov 1573, names his sons Nicholas, Richard and Thomas. To his son Richard he left his house in Wingrave with eight yards of meadow lands and a close called 'Smythes Green' (Arch Bucks, Filed Will). The Wingrave Court Roll for 1573-4 shows that at his death John Putnam held a house there of the Honor of Berkhamstead by knight's service, which house was 'sometimes the town house, with a close called Smythes Green and 8 yards of meado in franchise and 3 acres of arable land. Richard Putnam is his heir, of full age, whereby 4.4 is due the Queen for his relief' (Court Rolls and Ministers' Accounts, Berkhamstead, Portfolio 155, no. 38). It must here be noted that Richard was not the eldest son, but is described as heir because he was devisee of this land by his father's will. The eldest son of John Putnam of Rowsham and Wingrave was a John Putnam. He is not mentioned in his father's will, but there is ample evidence upon this point.' G. Andrews Moriarty, 'The English Ancestry of John Putnam of Salem, MA' The American Genealogist, 15;8 'John of Rowsham, son of Richard of Woughton, was assesed at 'Wingrave with Rowsham' on 18 Feb 37 Henry VIII (1545/6) on 7 pounds in goods, for 4/8 (L.S. 78/148) and again on 20 April 3 Edward VI (1549) for relief on 12 pounds goods, 12/ (L.S. 79./163), which proves that he was born as early as about 1515-1520.'
