Nathaniel Adam Lentz1,2

M, b. 23 November 1819, d. 20 April 1900
FatherJohn Jacob (Jakie) Lentz1 b. 1777, d. 1 Jul 1867
MotherMary Yost Jr.1 b. bt 1777 - 1778, d. c 1867
Nathaniel Adam Lentz B78- Nathaniel Adam ('Adam') Lentz was born on 23 Nov 1819 in NC. The last two children of B7-, including B78-, are not shown on Organ Church Records, but later census records show them born in NC.
We have been unable to locate his father, B7- Jacob, anywhere in 1820. It was at first believed that he went with other members of his family to IL in about 1818 to help build houses and barns since we was known as a carpenter, but we have been unable to locate him on any census in IL.
In Nov 1841 in Iredell Co., Adam married FIRST D421- Mary Ann Lentz, who was born 23 Oct 1823 and died 6 Oct 1892. She was a daughter of D42- Henry Lentz & Susana Knup. Adam and Mary Ann had 11 children. She was Adam's second cousin once-removed.
Adam was a millwright for water-operated saw mills and had the first circular saw sawmill in Catawba Co., NC, selling most of the lumber to the new railroad system. The saw mill was on Lyles Creek.
On 28 May 1859, Adam sold 27,506 feet of lumber to the railroad Station House at Newton, (Catawba Co.), NC.
Adam and his nephew B711- Jacob Lentz of Stony Point, NC, married sisters and operated the saw mill as a common project until B711- Jacob's wife died of fever in 1861. Jacob then moved to Alexander Co., NC, where he was conscripted, and Adam moved to Iredell Co., where he was conscripted.

Adam Lentz's Old Trunk Containing
Correspondence Written During the Civil War

Adam served in the senior reserves with the Confederate Army, and his old trunk has many letters and other papers connected with the Civil War. He had moved back to Iredell Co. during the war and later bought a farm in Rowan Co. several miles northwest of Salisbury.
John Paul Lentz extracted the following choice items from the trunk's contents:
CSA records: Adam Lentz, Co. A, 2nd NC Training Bn (Reserves), paroled at Greensboro, NC, 3 May 1865, as employed by L. C. Hanes, Capt., & A.Q.M. at Salisbury, NC. He was released several times as a millwright to go work on private mills that must have been providing supplies to the Confederate army.
Apparently Adam spoke a broken German-English dialect. In a letter home, he stated, 'Ve git more den ve kin et.' Envelopes were scarce, so the soldiers had steamed many of them open, turned them inside out and reglued them with flour paste. Both sides show a variety of correspondents.
An application for a 30-day leave for Adam Lentz shows that he had dark hair, grey eyes, fair complexion, and over age 45. It was signed by Capt. T. G. Morrison, Co. D, 2nd Regt, Senior Reserves, dated 10 Sep 1864 and included, 'Please furnish transportation to Statesville, NC.'
The trunk collection included a letter to Adam from Thomas A. Freeland who married D4A- Sophia Caroline Lentz, who was an aunt of the wife of Adam. The letter is also written in a German-American dialect, dated 12 Sep 1864. In it, Freeland tells Adam that there will be no more details (groups assigned for special work) and those on detail will be called back to camp. He tells Adam to report back 'as soon as your permit is over or sooner if you can. They are sending home for all those absent with or without leave.' He said that 'Elich' (D4B- John Eli) Lentz (uncle of the wife of Adam) 'was here today and told us you were at home.' (Eli Lentz took an oath on 12 June 1865 as Pvt., 5th NC, Jr. Guard, Stanly Co., NC, and may have been D236- Eli A. Lentz, but this one would not have had any knowledge about who was at home in Iredell Co., so the reference must be to D48-.) ('Elich,' no doubt is the German equivalent of 'Eli.')
Adam was sent a letter to Happy Home, NC, where he had been furloughed to work as a millwright, ordering him back to camp in Salisbury, dated 1 Feb 1865, Happy Home Post Office, Burke Co., NC.
A lot of history could be put together from the contents of this old trunk that once belonged to Adam Lentz. Adam helped build the St. Paul's Lutheran Church on the south edge of Statesville.

Post-Civil War

On 4 Jan 1894 Adam married SECOND to Maria Eddleman, bride age 55, groom age 73.
Adam died on 20 Apr 1900 and was buried in the Franklin Cemetary, Rowan Co., NC. His descendents own the farm he bought at the time of the Civil War, probably with Confederate money.
