Catherine Caty Lentz was Marriage; Person Source.2 Unrecognized GEDCOM data: Unknown GEDCOM tag: _UID F50F24F1A72FD848A205B49ADF69DA284E37. She was born circa 1791 at Rowan County, North Carolina.1 Catherine was probably a free white female, under age 10, in Bastian Lentz's household on the 1800 Census at Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina; Bortian Lence Jr. 1 male 26-44; 1 female 26-44 (this is Sebastian Levi Lentz). There is also a "Bostian Lence" near Devott [sic] and Michael Lence. "This" Bostian has 3 males 0-9, 1 male 26-44; 1 female 0-9, and 1 female 26-44. 3 males 0-9 could be Henry (8), Abraham (6), and Dewalt (4). The 1 female could be Caty (9.)3 Catherine Caty Lentz married Henry Hoffner Powlas, son of Adam Powlas and Mary Dillow, on 6 April 1816 at Rowan County, North Carolina; The source states: 'Powles, Henry & Caty Lentz, 6 Apr 1816; William Powles, bondsman; Geo. Dunn, wit.' (William was either his brother or father, most likely.)4,5,1 Her married name was Powlas.1 Catherine Caty Lentz Person Source.2 She and Henry Hoffner Powlas Marriage bonded by William POWLAS, his brother or father. Also see 'Rowan Marriages 1753-1868,' p. 327: 'Powles, Henry & Caty Lentz, 6 Apr 1816; William Powles, bondsman; Geo. On 3 May 1817, Bk. 33, p. 62, Rowan, B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr. sells Henry Powlas for $500, 191 acres in Rowan and 3 acres joining it in Cabarrus Co. (See LENTZ HERITAGE, Chap. VII, pp. 83-85 for Land Map.) Both pieces were granted to B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., by the state of NC and joined the county line.
The 1820 census shows both she and her husband as age 26-45, with 2 boys under age 10, so she would have been born before 1794.
It is believed that one of these boys was B141- Charles Lentz, born 29 Jul 1815, baptised by grandfather Bastian Lentz, Jr. on 15 Jun 1816. If this is the case, Henry Powlas probably sponsored B141- Charles Lentz at baptism because B141- was living with the Powlas family at the time. B141- was a son of B14- Abraham Lentz and wife ___ Poole, who died when Charles was born. He is back with his father Abraham on the 1830 census. Henry Powlas was the sponsor of Charles when his grandfather B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., had him baptised.
16 Jan 1833, from NC Archives, Raleigh, H: 581: The Will of Henry Powlas, wife 'Caty,' probated Feb 1833, shows only two sons: (1) Charles Powlas (B121-) born before 1820, and (2) Alexander Powlas (B122-), believe born after 1820. Executors were (B13-) Henry Lentz and Jacob Yost. (Henry was Catherine's brother.)
Will of B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr, 14 Jan 1851, Bk K, p. 171, Rowan, he names daughter Catherine, wife of Henry Powlas, if both were alive and gives her $5 in addition to what he had already given her.
We have no further records on this family, and no other children have been found.1

Peter Joseph Joe Lentz B18- Peter Joseph 'Joe' Lentz, born 4 Aug 1805 by Bible records. He is not shown in Organ Church records. The bible is owned by Mr. and Mrs. J. Samual Morgan, Rowan Co., off of the Bringle Perry Road. They are both great-grandchildren of Peter ('Joe') and Polly Lentz, from Mrs. Myrtle Lentz Plyler, Rt 7, Box 238, Statesville, NC 20677.
This also is in agreement with the Dr. Van Poole Bible records sent to Mrs. Oscar J. File by Mrs. Thomas N. Vincent, 2805 Cherryridge Road, Englewood, CO, 80110. Peter Joseph 'Joe' Lentz married FIRST to 'Polly' (Elizabeth Hornberger on 21 Feb 1824, in Rowan Co., NC, bonded by Wm. Dickson; witnessed by Hy. Giles.
He a farmer, tailor, and gristmiller.
He does not show on the 1830 census of Rowan or Cabarrus Co.
He married SECOND to 'Polly' Mary Barringer Kesler on 8 Aug 1833, bonded by John M. Eller. She was born 15 Sep 1812 and died 23 Sep 1889, buried at the present Liberty Methodist Church cemetary, near her son, B189-- Peter Joseph Caldwell Lentz. She had seven children. 'Polly' was the daughter of John Kesler.
On the 1840 census (County not shown in Lentz Heritage--probably Rowan) shows Peter Lentz, age 30-40, hired help (?) age 30-40 (for 2 males), 1 son under 5, 2 daughters under 5, 1girl 5-10, 1 girl age 10-15. This is a perfect fit except that the oldest dau Nancy, age 15, is missing and probably staying with her aged grandfather Bastian Lentz, Jr., but the 1840 census record for the grandfather's household shows her as age 5 (probably a mistake on the census for the grandfather's household.
The 1850 census (probably Rowan) shows Peter Lentz, age 44, Polly, age 39, Lutishia, 16, Robert A., 14., Joicie, 12, Julia A., 10, Rose, age 7, and Alfred, age 4. The two older girls must have left home.
Peter 'Joe' Lentz died on 21 Jun 1851, buried in an unmarked grave at Liberty Methodist Church cemetary, Stokes Ferry Road. The old cemetary, one-half mile from the bridge, back in the woods, back of the third house on the right as you enter Liberty (crossroads), all tomb rocks are gone now and no evidence of graves. His burial place is shown (listed) in both of these bibles. The bible of 'Polly' Mary Kesler is by his SECOND wife and the first children may have their dates slightly in error as 'Polly' Kesler would know them only from other sources.
On 27 Feb 1859, his estate was settled (Rowan Co., Bk 42, p. 20.)
On 27 Feb 1859, his estate divided as below:
Widow - 'Polly' Lentz, 18 acres............$112.50 - Lot No. 2.
(B181-) Nancy Wormington, 3 acres...............21.50 - Lot No. 8.
(B183-) Lutitia Eller, 23 acres.............107.00 - Lot No. 3.
(B184-) Robert Lentz, 29 acres... .........116.00 - Lot No. 5.
(B186-) Elizabeth, 23 acres.............105.00 - Lot No. 1
(B187-) Rose Lentz, 28 acres.............100.00 - Lot No. 6
(B188-) Alfred Lentz, 29 acres.............116.00 - Lot No. 4
(B189-) Joseph Lentz, 33 acres.............115.00 - Lot No. 7 Total 186 acres $793.00
NOTICE: B182- Eliza Lentz does not show on the land settlement, and may have died or married and left the state before Feb 1859. It is possible that she did not belong to this family.
The 1860 Rowan Co. census shows his widow Mary Lentz, age 47; Robert A., age 23; Julia Ann A. E., 20; Rose L., 17; Alfred L. M., 14; Peter J. C., age 11; and Mary age 6. The first three girls had married and left home, and B185- Joicey had died. Added to this census record was a Mary Lentz, age 6, who is not known to us at present. She seems to be an orpham, age 6, b. c. 1854. She needs to be placed in a family.
Estate of B18- Peter 'Joe' and Polly Lentz, Rowan Bk 44, p. 478, 5 Oct 1868, she sells to sons B188- Alfred and B189- Peter J. C., for $467.
Only 2 sons and their wives were at home with widow Polly Lentz on the 1870 census, and the girl named Mary Lentz was added at age 16, b. 1854. She is not shown on the division of the estate amd therefore must not belong to this family. B18- Peter J. Lentz died 21 Jun 1851 and could not be the father of a girl born in 1854, She could have belonged to one of her children and may have been a granddaughter. The census records have been found to be very accurate.
The family history of this line is picked up here and completed by the following researchers, and you should refer to their work:

Lentz and Charles Lence B141- Charles Lentz. born 29 Jul 1815 by IL records or 29 Aug 1815 by Organ Church records. Organ Church records say he was baptized on 17 Sep 1815.. According to LH, he was B14- Abraham Lentz's son by B14-'s first wife, ____ Poole, who died in childbirth. B141-'s grandfather, B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., stood for him at church with his son-in-law Henry Powlas as sponsor. The Henry Powlas family kept the child until after the 1820 census.. He shows with Abraham's family in 1830. McCubbins records show the wife as ____ Poole and one son. According to LH, descendants in IL say this was his story: 'He was seeing the wrong women and was given a bag of gold coins and told to 'git'. He left between suns.' He arrived in IL about 1838, m. 5 Dec 1839 to Mary Elizabeth Holshouser, b. 22 Oct 1819 in Union Co.,IL. She died __ Apr 1860 in Pulaski Co., IL, dau of Andrew and Elizabeth Holshouser. Records from his family Bible. Children: (1) Abram (named for his father?); (2) Elizabeth (named for an aunt); (3) Margaret; (4) Anna; (5) Lewis; and (6) a girl. The following is John Paul Lentz's analysis trying to show the proper place to put B141- Charles Lentz (See LENTZ HERITAGE, Chap. IV, JH, Bastian Section, page 78). It appears to be very good and the only reasonable explanation. Notice that the 1850 census of Union Co., IL, which follows this, shows him as age 32, which is probably not quite correct, as it would make his year of birth 1818.) His reported birth on 29 Jul 1815 in NC was BEFORE B24- (John) George Lentz and Magdalena 'Laney' Casper were married on 30 Jan 1818, bonded by B2- Peter Lentz (the yeoman), father of George. Therefore, Charles cannot be considered their child Organ Church baptismal records show the following (Nos. 1 and 2): (1) Peter Lentz had a son Charles, b. 29 Aug 1815, baptized 17 Sep 1815, sponsored by Bastian Lentz. This Bastian Lentz could be either B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., at age 56 or B24- Bastian Lentz, age 19 years. B24- is generally ruled out because the father of the child, Peter Lentz, would be a close relative and his younger brother B44- Peter Lentz would be only age 14. Therefore, it appears that this would be B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., as a grandfather.. It has been impossible to locate this Peter in a family. (2) Also: Bastian Lentz, baptized Charles Lentz, b. 15 Jun 1815 (some show 1816 and 1817, baptized on _______, sponsored by 'He. Paulus' (Henry Powlas). This has been taken to be B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr. having his grandson, B141- Charles Lentz, baptized, sponsored by the child's uncle and son-in-law of Bastian, named Henry Powlas. (3) However, Mrs. McCubbins records show that B14- Abraham Lentz married FIRST to ________ Poole who died during childbirth of a son. Ir is believed that the SECOND baptism is this son B141- Charles Lentz and that the records have become jumbled in translation or transcribing and that BOTH baptismal records refer to the same child. The wife of B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr. would have been age about 49 in 1815 and too old to have babies--only grandsons like B141- Charles. (4) The story that goes with the family of Charles Lentz and Mary Elizabeth Holshouser is that Charles starting running around with the wrong women, which displeased his father (and step-mother who may have had trouble managing the step-son), and Charles was given a bag of gold coins and told to 'git'. He left between suns. This would have had to be when Charles was about age 18 to 21, or about the year 1836 to 1838, and his parents would have to be some of the Lentz family who remained in NC that long or longer. They would have to be from the Bastian Lentz line, and they would probably be on the 1840 census of Rowan Co., NC. Here are the Bastian Lentz people who show on the 1840 chensu of Rowan: B1- Bastian, Lentz, Jr; B18- Peter Joseph Lentz; B14- Abraham Lentz; B13- Henry Lentz. His parents would have to be selected from these four families. (5) Charles was age 14 or 15 on the 1830 census. He would not be over 15. B14- Abraham Lentz is the only one in the Bastian Lentz line with a son age 10-15. There are no SONS age 15-20 shown in this line. (Charles was with the family of Henry Powlas, an uncle, in 1820 since his father Abraham had just remarried and shows only as man and wife.) John Paul Lentz could see no other place to put this B141- Charles Lentz. (6) Reports received show that Charles Lentz arrived in IL about 1838 and married 5 Dec 1839 to Mary Elizabeth Holshouser. (IL Marriage Index supports this.) * * * His mother, Elizabeth Poole, died in childbirth. His grandfather, B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., stood for him at church with his son-in-law Henry Powlas as sponsor. Charles Lence was Marriage; Person Source.2 He B141- Charles Lentz. born 29 Jul 1815 by IL records or 29 Aug 1815 by Organ Church records. Therefore, Charles cannot be considered their child
Organ Church baptismal records show the following (Nos. 1 and 2):
(1) Peter Lentz had a son Charles, b.
It is believed that the SECOND baptism is this son B141- Charles Lentz and that the records have become jumbled in translation or transcribing and that BOTH baptismal records refer to the same child.

I have given a lot of thought to this problem, and I believe the correct parents are B232- Charles LENTZ/LENCE and Elizabeth Mary CLEMENTS. The key to my thinking is found on the 1850 Census, Jonesboro, Union Co., IL, which was taken on 23 NOVEMBER 1850. The entry is found on written page no. 467, printed page no. 235, Dwelling/Family no. 1277: LENCE, Charles, age 30, male, white, farmer, RE owned $150, b. in IL, illiterate. This would make his wife's YOB 1825, before 23 Nov. This would make Mary's YOB 1842, before 23 Nov. This would make Catharine's YOB 1846, before 23 Nov This would make Henry's YOB 1847, before 23 Nov This would make George's YOB 1850, probably in February. I am, therefore, deleting these four children from the family of B241- Charles LENTZ/LENTZ. Also, since all the children listed for B241- are duplicated for B232- I am convinced that where LH states, at the bottom of p. 55, that many researchers do not include B241- as part of this family, I thoroughly agree with them. Before I deleted B241- and family, the note in LH stated that his second wife was shown as Mary Ann HINKLE, m. 29 Apr 1845.      Elizabeth Lentz was Marriage; Person Source.2 She B17- Elizabeth Lentz, born 6 Oct 1803, sponsored by Leon Klutz, Organ Church. She married FIRST to 'Big John' Hartman on 1 Aug 1823. Rowan Marriages, Vol. II, p. 184, shows 'Betsey (Elizabeth) Lentz married John Hartman on 1 Aug 1823.' They had two children. Their first child was reportedly born three years later. This is not in keeping with the times. One list is shown here. Lentz Heritage says that the first three may be by John Hartman's first marriage. He is known to have had several older children before his marriage to B17- Elizabeth Lentz. However, if she and John Hartman married in 1823, the first child shown was born in 1827, which would make sense for this marriage and not John Hartman's first marriage.

She married SECOND to Michael File on 17 Sep 1849, bonded by Caleb Klutts. She and Mr. File had no children. Elizabeth Lentz Hartman File is buried at Union Lutheran Church 5 miles east of Salisbury on the Bringle Perry Road.1
