Henry Wenger was born circa 1737 at Summiswald, Emmental District, Canton Bern, Switzerland.1 He witnessed the immigration of Johannes "Hans" Wenger and Anna Wenger on 16 September 1748 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; In 1748, he and his family immigrated to America on the ship Patience (Paliena) and eventually settled in Jonestown, Lancaster County (now Lebanon County) Pennsylvania. HIs place of origin was Switzerland, and he arrived in the Port of Philadelphia on 16 Sep 1748. John Brown was the ship's master from Rotterdam, last from Cowes.1,2 He married Sarah ? at Venango County, Pennsylvania, say 1779.1 Henry Wenger died between 1804 and 1827 at Venango County, Pennsylvania; : Born in Switzerland. The family of Henry Wenger is the least understood of the descendants of Hans and Hannah. Some researchers have identified Henry's descendants but others have attributed those descendants to Lazarus Wenger, 1715.11.15 1796.12.16, D, (i1735.8.26) the immigrant of 1735. What is known by tradition is that he married Sarah, 1750~?, ^ a Senica Indian and lived near Oil City, Venango Co., PA in the N.W. part of PA. He had land on the west bank of the river through Oil City and later sold that land. The Martin L. Wenger biography states that he settled at Erie PA but at the time of the French revolution removed to Canada settling on Black Creek. Not mentioned in his father's will. Arthur Jacob Wingard, 1888.12.20 1969.3.25, G1812561 stated that Henry was a Tory and as soon as the Revolutionary War was over he moved to Nova Scotia, became wealthy and founded a branch of the family. Evidence for this is not available. The following is from hand written notes of Norman Wenger Nauman; We learn from tradition that Henry Wenger left Lancaster Co., PA and went to Western PA some time before 1756. He was a good friend of the Indians and when the French and Indian War broke out he crossed Lake Erie into Canada. After the struggle was settled he returned to the Senica Indians and married a Senica Indian by the name of Sarah and probably lived among the Indians. This would account for his name not being found in the 1790 census list and among early histories of white settlers in Western PA. In Babcock's history of Venango Co. (Vol. 1 page 300) he relates of an unknown squatter who located on about 400 acres and made some improvements on the West Bank of Oil Creek just above its mouth. This may have been Henry Winger. On the East side corn planters of the Senica Indians owned a large tract of land which was a part of the gift made to him by the state of PA by Act of Assembly March 1796 for services rendered after the Revolutionary War. The unknown squatter who may have been Henry Winger sold his claim to Francis and Sarah Halyday in 1803 and the Wengers probably lived among the Seneca Indians on the East side of Oil Creek. I have been told by a few of the Winger descendants that Henry's son Joseph used to farm the land which is now Senica Street in Oil City, PA. The above from hand written notes of Norman Nauman. RDW gives that he lived on Halyday stream. DLW concludes that original information is needed on Henry's children.1
