Troutman of Montgomery County (He was 72 and a veteran of the Mexican War), Caroline wife of John M Hileman, and Leah wife of Thomas Ury. He was a charter member of Salem Lutheran Church.".3 They mentioned in obituary of John A Cruse' at Union County, Illinois, on 2 February 1907; "John Cruse died last Saturday (2 Feb 1907) aged 81 years and was buried beside his wife in the old family burying ground at the homestead south of Jonesboro. His funeral was at the old residene one mile west of Springville. He was born about one and a half miles east of Mill Creek. His father moved to Jonesboro with another son, Charles Cruse, and owned a mercantile business. He left a son, Henry C Cruse, of Wolf Lake; one daughter Mrs. John Miller two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Ury and Mrs. John Hileman.8,9

George Sangster is included in the biography of David Shirk and Harriet Ann Sangster; David SHIRK, farmer, Waterman, was b. in this township on the same farm on which he now resides, his father, Isaac Shirk, having come to this part of the state in 1826, with his father, David Shirk, when quite young, and located on Coal Creek, he being the second settler in this part of the county. His mother, Sarah WILLIAMS, was a d/o Edward Williams, one of the early settlers in Vermilion Co. Mr. David Shirk is engaged in managing the farm of 156 acres belonging to the estate, his mother and one brother being still alive. His father d. in 1849, of cholera, while on a trip to New Orleans on a flatboat, in which business he had been engaged for a long time. At the time of his death he was on his 21st trip to that port. in 1861, Mr. Shirk enlisted in the 21st Indiana and in Nov. of the same years was discharged. He reenlisted, in 1862, in the 97th Ind. Reg. and served 3 years and was at Cornith, Vicksburg, and the battle of Jackson. He was marr. in Covington to Miss Harriet A. SANGSTER, d/o Capt. George Sangster, an old resident and who served during the war of 1812, and settled at Covington, Fountain Co, in 1840, and d. there in 1873 in his 85th year. Mr. Shirk has a family of two children: George E. and Sallie B. In politics he is a prominent member of the Democratic party. He does a large business in agricultural implements.
