Moses Rolfe was baptized on 14 September 1735 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.2 He was born on 14 September 1735 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.1 He married Judith Newman on 29 November 1759 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.1 Moses Rolfe died on 19 September 1762 at Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 27; The posted obituary of Moses Rolfe, the original of which is in the Historical Society of Olde Newbury at Newburyport, MA is as follows:
Newburyport Sept 30 1762
Capt Moses Rolfe of this town sailed from hence for the West Indies the 28th of last May, in a brig with 6 men, 1 boy, and 1 passenger, 6 carriage guns, no swivels, muskets, nor cutlesses. And after he had been the sport of adverse winds and squalls for fifty two days he made Dizeado, a small island near Guadeloupe. Next morning a Spanish privateer sloop of ten carriages and twelve swivel guns and eighty men gave chase and came up with the brig about 11 o'clock. From that time until two in the afternoon many hot broadsides were exchanged, and the Spanierds made several attempts to board the brig, but Capt Rolfe ply'd them warmly with langrage and grape shot, that they were obliged to bear off after three unsuccesful attempts; and doubtless would have saved himself and people, by running the brig ashore on a reef, had not the passenger told him he coujld not swim, and therefore woudl be left a prey to the inhuman Spanierds.
But this excited his generous heart, and gave fresh vigor to his natural fortitude and courage. He put about and engaged the privateer the fourth time in hopes of getting into St. Anne's; but the platform of his two chases, which were his largest guns, and three pounders gave way, so that he could not take their bowsprit; hence the privateers got on the brig's lee quarter, and threw seventeen hands on her quarter deck.
Capt Rolfe was immediately surrounded by them; however, he laid the most of them for dead before they could gain the least ascendancy over him; but having reeeived many wounds in his head and elsewhere, together with many dry blows on his back and shoulders, at length they brought him down on the quarter deck, where he lay sometime covered with blood, and they thought he was dead.
One of the brig's men escaped by swimming ashore; three were put on board the privateer; and the next morning she sailed up to Dizeado, and plundered the island; but the inhabitants, rising upon them, killed three of the Spanierds, and five got on board much wounded.
Capt Rolfe revived, so that he could speak, with much entreaty prevailed with the Spanish captain to put him and his people ashore on that island, after he had treated them with great inhumanty.
From thence the generous and valiant Capt Rolfe got down to St. Annes in three or four days, and returned in Capt Bachelleur as far as Cape Ann, on the nineteenth day of this instant, where he lay sick of his wounds five days and died. But before his death, God, of his infinite and adorable grace, caused him to triumph in Christ, and the eternal glory through him.
"Try Thine ethereal voice," in funeral numbers and doleful song, Rolfe the upright, the generous and the young, "Rolfe the friend is dead, O empty name of earthly bliss. His body is brought to this town, and buried last Monday evening; and as a testimony of respect to men of merit, his funeral was attended by a very great procession of all degrees."1

He is numerated in the 1790 census as "Samuel Roff" with one boy under the age of sixteen and two females in the household. By 1800, Samuel "Roff," aged 26-45, was the head of a Biddeford household consisting of a young man aged 16-26 (probably his son Joseph, born 25 May 1785), a wife his own age, and two girls aged 10-16.

There were Rolfes in Biddeford in the 18th century according to Revolutionary War military records. They include Jeremiah Rolfe, a resident of Biddeford and member of the militia, possibly the same Jeremiah who was a resident of Pepperellborough (later Saco); Timothy Rolfe/Roff of Biddeford; and Samuel Rolf/Rowf, also of Biddeford. See elsewhere in this database for information about these men.
