To dau Sarah Benjamin, 7 pounds, paid her by Thomas in 7 years. To grandchild William Fenner, 5 pounds when of age, paid by testator's son Thomas. Savages Gen Dictionary lists second wife as Mary, widow of John Cooke of Warwick RI, married 1655/or 1656. Thomas prob lived some time before marriage in Warwick. [Prob because first wife remarried 1651 and had obtained a divorce from him) Savages Gen Dict says children Thomas, Sarah, Deliverance, and Benjamin [but Benjamin is last name of dau Sarah] and grandchild William Fenner and cousin Samuel Stafford and Samuel Relf, son by first marriage named in will The South in the Building Nation, Vol. I, p. 415 (S Historical Pub Society, Richmond, VA, 1909; in Andover Newton Theo Sem Lib): 'There may have been settlers in Albermarle before 1653. It may be true that Roger Green did lead the first colony there in that year. Certainly, before the year 1663, John Battle, Thomas Relfe, Roger Williams, Thomas Jarvis, and perhaps others had purchased lands fr the Indians who dwelt along the waters of Albermarle Sound and settled them.. The grant to George Durant by Kilcocanen, chief of the Yeopim Indians, dated 1 Mar 1661/1662, for a tract line along the Perquimins River and Albermarle Sound is the oldest grant for land in NC now extant.' The Early Records of the Town of Providence (Being the Providence Town Papers) Vol. 1, 1639-April 1682, No. 0120, starts with grant of land from Connonicus and Miantinomie to Roger Williams and from him to thirteen 'loveing ffriends and neighbors' 1 Oct 1661; later Nathaniell Waterman, Thomas ffield & William Harris dispute the validity of this grant, calling it a 'pretence of a grant from Coowesett Indians beareing date the 23 of June 1662,' and summon 'John Harrod, Roger Burlingham, and Thomas [Relfe] of Warwick' to court 17 Nov 1677. The land is called 'Meshantatack & by some Paquabuck within the foresd boundes and lands of patuxett.' Relfe, Harrod, and Burligham have been settled on the property since 13 or 14 May 1663. Evidently Waterman, ffield, and Harris lost their claim, because Thomas in his will (proved 1682) mentions his land in 'Meshantaca.' Subject: [ROLFE-L] Rolfe Surname Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 21:33:37 -0500 From: Ken Poole To: ROLFE-L@rootsweb.com Hi all, I've been gone, back now. Missed talking. I've been looking and have found the name Rolfe spelled: Roffe, Woofe, Wolfe, Wroth, Relph, and sometimes Rolfe (grin). I put all (of them) in the computer as Rolfe, and make a note in the notes field of the actual name I'm finding it under. Making some progress doing it that way, as I find at times, the same man under different spelling, and can merge them. Some Rolfes in James City Co., Norfolk area. Some Rolfes (early spelling) and Relphes (same name in later years) in Pasquotank area of NC. Used the Rolfe name at first. Many entries. Thomas Rolfe Gent., took land there about 1666. That was first time land opened there. That Thomas Rolfe said to be of the Pocahontas connection. In fact, some believe it was his last known entry of any nature. A Thomas Rolfe (a younger one) showed up to take the land, a lawyer perhaps, many things he signed off on. Any help here, I can use it. Two Rolfes into Virgina 1635, 1640, two different men. Anyone tell me of the origin of the use of the name Varina, connected to a 1640's Rolfe? Clearly it has been miswritten about. Ken.1 He was Name-Standard.
