He was a gunsmith, farmer and lived on the soth side of the Ipswich river, just east of his fthers farm. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and on the day of his death, he was looking for game. He was unsucessful and went fishing in the swan pond. A short distance from shore, he evidently made a misstep, turned the boat over and drowned

"He was a gunsmith and farmer and lived in North Reading on a farm which was situated on the soth side of Ipswich River, a short distance eastward of his father's farm.
The following obituary of him is copied from the Salem Gazette:
'Died in Reading 8th inst Mr. James Flint. He lost his life in the amusement of fowling and fishing, of which he was extremely fond through life. On the day of his death he entered a wood in quest of game, but not being succesful with his gun, he took his angling lines, with a small boat, and went out on Swan Pond, for the purpose of fishing. Having proceeded but a short distane from shore, he probably made a misstep, fell on the side of the boat, and turned it over. It was found bottom upwards. After a prompt and diligant search by raking the bottom of the pond for more than twenty-four hours, he was taken up and conveyed to his family. They deeply mourn the loss of an affectionate and faithful friend Under the constant influence of Christian principles and precepts, his faith was rational, his mind steady, his affections pure, and his passions regular. All the duties belonging to the important relations of husband, parent, and brother, he disharged with tenderness and fidelity. In him the Christian religion has lost a uniform friend and supporter, the community in which he lived an ingenious artist and useful member, and his country a true patriot. Let the manner of his death admonish the aged of their infirmities and men of every age to be also ready." Flint Thomas 1860 p. 21.3,6

Hi Linda,

After exhaustive research efforts it has been determined that
there is absolutely no evidence that Henry Jr. HERRICK married Lydia
WOODBURY. None of the WOODBURY families established at the time had a
daughter named Lydia, no widowed Lydia WOODBURYs were extant, and no
Immigrants have been detected named Lydia WOODBURY.

The Marriage record merely notes his wife was Lydia, women weren't
important enough to actually name them in the marriage records, yet.

Henerie HERRICK was next door neighbor to Edmund GROVER & 2nd wife
Margaret unknown. Edmund's son Nehemiah was the co-executor of Henerie
HERRICK's estate. If Henry Jr. GROVER did not marry Lydia GROVER there
were no other known family connections between the GROVERs and the HERRICKs
to justify naming Nehemiah GROVER as co-executor, unless his sister Lydia
GROVER married Henry HERRICK. The other co-executor was Robert MORGAN
whose grandson Samuel MORGAN Jr. married Sarah HERRICK, daughter of
Zachariah & Mary DODGE HERRICK. so the other co-executor did have a family
connection to Henerie HERRICK

Then we found this record:

Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County Massachusetts
vol. ii 1656-1662 Salem Essex Institute, 1912.

30 November 1659
Joan, wife of Robert HIBBURD, for railing and speaking several lies upon
Zachery HEREK, affirming that he was drunk, and went away from John STON's
house drunk about one or two o'clock at night. She took God to witness that
she did not speak them, etc.
Witness: Hendry HERECK Jr., Liddia GROVER and Marye HERECK. She was to make
acknowledgement or pay fine and costs. She paid the fine (pg. 190).

26 June 1660
Joane HIBBERT fined 10 shillings upon her presentment, for saying that
Liddea GROVER and Mary GROVER were the "veriest lyers att bass riuer
and they were able to ly the devill out of Hell. She confessed that
she said it and that it was true.
Henry HERRICK Jr., and Mary w/o Zackory HERICK, deposed that they heard
Joane HIBBARD say it. (pg. 222)

What is truly significant about these records is that Henry &
Lydia HERRICK married June of 1660. Note the dates above. What would a
single man in that day and age be doing so closely interacting with a
single woman, Lydia GROVER, the very month he married his wife named Lydia,
unless he was courting her and they were engaged to be married?

After digging around on the GROVERs we learned: there is no
mention of Lydia GROVER anywhere in any records after June of 1660 <above>>. No other marriage records exist for Lydia GROVER. And while a
death date is listed for her by some of 1672, there is not a shred of
evidence to back that up. Absolutely nothing we could locate on Lydia
GROVER disqualified her as being the true Mrs Henry HERRICK

So I can absolutely state that Lydia WOODBURY is an error passed
down. Best I can do regarding Lydia GROVER is state that it has not been
disproven after extensive efforts to do so. The ties to Henry HERRICK are
obvious in the probate records and they were neighbors, and when you couple
this with Nehemiah GROVER being the executor of the estate of Henerie
HERRICK it sure all fits together in a sensible manner.

I posted the entire write up on MAESSEX-L some time back where
they love to point out errors and discuss these types of questions and
challenged any listmember to prove Lydia GROVER was not the wife of Henry
HERRICK.

I still await an answer to my challenge.
