John Taylor1

John Taylor was born circa 1754 at Massachusetts; Date and place conjecture.1 He The John Taylor of Plymouth, VT (listed in 1790 census as Salteesh), is probably not the John Taylor husband of Mary Rolph. This John Taylor's wife was Abigail, and she is buried in Plymouth, VT. This directory is about this John Taylor (not ours) Business Directory of Windsor County, VT 1883-84, p. 174 (Town of Plymouth) - 'John Taylor, from Carlisle MA, came to Plymouth in 1784, and located upon the farm now occupied by his grandson Reuben Taylor. Mr. Taylor had a family of nine children, only one of whom, Mrs. Betsey Coolidge, of Rochester VT is now living. Reuben Taylor, father of the present Reuben, born on the old homestead, held many of the town offices, and died in 1876, aged eighty-two years. Carlisle in Middlesex County, just north of Concord. Vital records supposed to start 1755, although Town of Carlisle itself was established 1780 as District of Carlisle from parts of Acton, Billerica, Chelmsford, and Concord, made a town in 1805. There are 2 John Taylor families in 1790 census in Windsor County -- Saltesh Town, John Taylor, 1 male 16+, 1 male 16-, 1 female. In Chester Town is 1 male 16+, 4 males 16-, 4 females. Either is possible, although Stephen Rolph's probate records would tend to lean toward Chester Town. If so, where are VR for children? Princeton VR? or VT? Stephen Rolph1

M, b. 3 August 1747, d. between 1807 and 1818
FatherStephen Rolph1 b. 1719, d. 22 Nov 1792
MotherSusannah Stewart1 b. 5 Sep 1725, d. 24 Oct 1805
Stephen was born at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts, on 3 August 1747.1,2 He was 'a Revolutionary War soldier'-Fred Rolfe.1 He married Abigail Temple at Heath, Franklin County, Massachusetts, in 1770.1,3 Velonia Rolph, born in Corinth, Saratoga county, New York, February 28, 1806, died in the town of Poland, Chautauqua county, New York, October 14, 1890, eldest daughter of Benjamin and Asenath (Cook) Rolph. Stephen Rolph, her grandfather, came from England about 1770 to avoid service in the English army. Abigail Temple, sister of Henry, father of Charlotte Temple, came with him. They were married immediately on reaching New York. They settled in New England, near the Vermont-Massachusetts boundary line, but after five years Stephen was obliged to flee to avoid recapture by the British soldiers, and was never again heard from. It is believed he joined the revolutionary army under an assumed name and was killed.4 Stephen Rolph appeared on the census of 1771 at Marlboro, Cumberland County, New York; Ralf, Stephen 1771 census, Marlboro, VT (see Semi-Weeky Eagle of Brattleboro, 1850, p. 307. Marlboro was considered in Cumberland County, NY 1770-1777; after 1835ff Windham County, VT. He lived; MA, NY; 'husbandman w/out the government' in 1793 (Stephen 1.1 He In MA Soldiers and Sailors of the Rev War, Vol XIII, Rea-Sey (1905) are two listings for Stephen Rolph. Stephen Rolph, Private, Capt John Well's co, Lieut Col Timothy Robinson's detachment of Hampshire Co militia; muster roll dated Garrison at Ticonderoga Feb 24, 1777; enlisted Dec 23, 1776; enlistment to expire March 25, 1777; reported deserted Jan 2, 1777. Stephen Rolph. Descriptive list dated Deerfield, July 24, 1780, of men detached from Hampshire County militia, agreeable to resolve of June 22, 1780, and returned by Maj David Dickinson as mustered by him by order of Lieut Col David Wells; 1st or 9th co, 5th Hampshire Co regt; age, 31 years; stature, 6 ft; complexion light, hair, dark; eyes, light; engaged for town of Deerfield; term, 3 months. In History of Deerfield (MA). He VT Revolutionary Rolls, 1775-1783, by John M Goodrich (Rutland VT 1904) - 1781 has this entry: 'Capt Lemuel Carey (VT Militia); Stephen Rolph 24 miles, 3 days.' He research possibilities are I was hoping to find the family of Stephen Rolph embedded in the family of Daniel Ralph of Woodstock, VT, in the 1790 census (because Woodstock is the next town over from where Stephen's daughter Abigail lived). However, I am not so sure. Census for Daniel Ralph has 3 males 16+, 3 males 16- and 5 females. Here is one possible reconstruction:
male 16+ - Daniel Ralph, Jonathan Ralph, Phineas Ralph (unless one of them has his own household)
male 16- - Daniel Ralph, David Ralph, Amos Ralph
females -- wife Priscilla, daughters Priscilla, Prudence, Susan

At most only room for one male 16+ (if one of the Ralphs has his own census line) and one female. in 1790 at Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont. Stephen Rolph 'husbandman w/out the government' in 1793 (Stephen 1 probate records) in 1793. He was paid by bro in 1806 acc to Stephen 1's probate record. He died between 1807 and 1818 at Vermont.1 He Stephen (1) Rolph's probate record has this information Jonas Leonard's receipt Charlemont, Dec 6, 1796 Whereas Mr. Stephen Rolph of Princeton ----- by his last will and testament, bequeathed to the children of his son Stephen by his first wife each one part being near the sum of four dollars each whereas Mrs. Susanna Rolph being trustee for [sd?] children their being for the personal estate we have received our part of it being in full of said personal Estate recd by us. Jonas Leonard; Abigail Leonard x her mark; [Ezekiel Leonard, Bearer] there belong three [small?] children of the said son Stephen. . .we Stephen Rolph and Abigail Leonard, wife of Jonas Leonard, children of the sd son Stephen. Stephen Rolph, Jonas Leonard, Abigail Leonard, her mark. There was a John Roff in Albany County, NY in 1790 census (013 01 01 01 00 00). Also there was a Stephen Rolff in (p. 152) Reading Town, Middlesex County, MA in 1790. He is evidently still there in 1800 (p. 135), 'Rolf, Stephen, 01201-00001-00). This Stephen Rolf is prob the Stephen Rolfe, son of Daniel Rolfe & Martha, chr 1750 in Middlesex, Reading (IGI C501261). Washington County, NY -- its History to the Close of the 19th C (ed in chief William L. Storr) NY Hist Co, 1901 -- p. 3 -- 7 Feb 1791 - towns of Cambridge and Easton, in the county of Albany, be annexed to Washington County; p. 298 'that part of the towns of Saratoga and Stillwater, lying east of the Hudson, was formed into a new town, by the name of Easton, and was also annexed to Washington, bounded north by Greenwich, east by Jackson and Cambridge, south by Rensselaer County, w by Hudson River; orig part of Saratoga Patent of 1684; afterwards parts of Stillwater and Saratoga; 12 Mar 1813, the County of Warren was established this reduced the area of Washington County to the limits which it has ever since retained. 1771 census VT -- Residences: MA, NY; Stephen would have turned 21 in 1768. Could he have married in Shrewsbury, MA, then gone to Marlboro, VT by 1771? In Marlboro, VT census of that date. Abigail Rolph supposedly born in New York State. Marlboro VT considered part of NY state 1770-1778. Abigail b 1772. Moved to Deerfield, Hampshire County, MA, before 1778? 1636-Pocumtuck-1886, by Geo Sheldon, Vol II, 1893, p. 737, is the same list of men detached to serve with Thomas W. Dickinson. He would have been 33 (not 31) in 1780. Could he continued as a resident in VT, but simply enlisted with men of Deerfield? Weight is added to Stephen's possible residence in Windham County, VT during this time because Jonas Leonard and Abigail Rolph may have married in Windsor County, VT or Hampshire County, MA. Could Stephen still be in Windham County, VT and not listed for some reason in 1790 census? The Stephen Rolff [sic] of Reading, Middlesex, MA has 1 male 16+, 4 males under 16, 3 free white females. Seems large for a family that should only have 3 children in 1793, unless Stephen re-married, and most of these children are hers, not his. Did Stephen Rolph go back to Vermont before father died, then return to Reading? On 1800 Reading, Middlesex, census, Stephen could be the 1 male 45 + and Abigail (or second wife) the 1 free white female 45 and over. Benjamin and son Stephen could be two sons 16-26. Who then is 1 son 10-16? Did the other son get married in Reading or somewhere or die? What do Reading VR have to offer? Benjamin Temple not in VT 1790, but in MA Concord Town, 2 males 16+, 1 female. Middlesex Probate Index has no Rolf, Stephen, or Ralf, Stephen. Corinth, Saratoga County, NY 1820 census lists a Stephen Rolph (p. 163) -- 4 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45 +; 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 0 f 45+. . Could this be our Stephen? If so, who are all the 'extra' children? VT Revolutionary Rolls, 1775-1783, by John M Goodrich (Rutland VT 1904) - 1781 Capt Lemuel Carey (VT Militia); Stephen Rolph 24 miles, 3 days.1
