Moses McWHORTER1

M, b. circa 1700, d. 1756
Moses McWHORTER was born circa 1700 at Ulster, Ireland; now Northern Ireland; Fowler, Blake says 1700-1710 but, if William b bef 1720, then Moses would be more likely born c 1700.2,3 He married Margery Marlin circa 1719 at Ireland.4 Moses McWHORTER died in 1756 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Martinson has 1770; Bowman has c 1756.2,3 May have landed in New Castle County, Deleware; lived in Cecil County MD, Chester and Lancaster Cos PA prior to 1750. He obtained a land grant in Colorain Township, Lancaster County PA between 1750 and 1752, located on Octoraro Creek (McWherters and Claytons of Tennessee, A Printout of the Descendants of John McWhorter et al 3/1/1993 from Jerry Kennedy, McLean, VA; Descendants of Moses McWhorter and Related Families, compiled by Anna Harman Bowman, All Printing Co Oklahoma City OK 1987, p. 1, 131). "Moses and his son Henry fought in the French and Indian War which began in 1754. They served in a company of militia formed in Colorain Township. Moses died during the war and may have died as a result of this service. No records of him have been found after 1756. His occupation was that of farmer. There are no records to prove that Moses married a Marlin, but PA records show a kinship to the Marlins and the name Marlin appears in the given names of McWhorter children of later generations. The will of Margery Marlin (Chester Co PA) dated and probated 1769, left a bequest to Elizabeth, wife of William McWhorter (son of Moses)." (Bowman, Descendants of Moses McWhorter). "Lancaster Co PA may have been in Cecil Co MD before that time. He fought in the French and Indian War, may have been killed, no recoreds after 1754. Probably married a French Huguenot --- Marlin. He appears to have had these children: Henry, George, William, Aaron 1st, Moses 2nd, James and three daughters" (George McWhorter Sr and Descendants of Union County NC 1735-1988, compiled and published by Mrs. Frances Richardson Small and Mrs. Mary Tyson Starnes, printed by Direct Quick Copy Inc Monroe NC 1988, p. ii.)5 He from http://homepages.rootsweb.com/ ~mcwgen/mosespa.htm McWhorter web page, 'North American Progenitors' ' Each of the following 18th century McWh*rter immigrants to North America has been, or will be, the subject of an article in the McWh*rter Genealogy Newsletter. Each article is accompanied by a 3-generation register report. As each article and register report is published they will be made available here on the web site. John McWhorter (cir1710-1757) of Albemarle County, Virginia. John was in Albemarle county, Virginia as early as 1745 and settled in that part of the county which became part of of Amherst county in 1761 and is now part of Nelson co., Virginia. (winter 1997 article  |  register report) Hugh McWhorter (cir1690-1750) of Pencader Hundred, New Castle, County, DE. Hugh was a linen merchant from County Armagh, Ireland who about 1730 immigrated to New Castle County, Delaware where he became a farmer.  (available spring 1997) David McWhorter (1741-1789) of Lancaster County, PA; Rutherford County, NC; and Abbeville County, SC. David was a blacksmith who married Mary Poston in Lancaster County, Pennyslyvania before removing his family south to North Carolina and eventually settling along Hurricane Creek in Abbeville County, South Carolina. (available summer 1997) Hugh McWhorter (1757-1837) of York County, SC. About 1795 Hugh brought his wife, Mary, and at least five children from Ireland to York County, South Carolina. Within a generation some of his family had 'gone to Texas'. (available fall of 1997) Others to come include: r  Moses McWhorter of Lancaster co., PA r  Hugh E. 'Hughey' McWhorter of PA and DE r  Mathew McWhorter of Washington co., NY' Jean Rolph has found descendants of Hugh (circa 1690-1750), David (1741-1789), Hugh (1757-1837), and Moses (of Lancaster County, PA), all living in North Carolina and South Carolina at about the same time. Glenda McWhorter Todd wrote: 'Some researchers think our William McWhorter was a son of Hugh and brother of Rev. Alexander McWhorter. Hugh was a linen merchant in Armagh Ireland and its is thought Moses was also from Armagh. Hugh and his family landed in New Castle County DE about 1734/35. It is thought Moses also landed in New Castle County about the same time, however a Wilson County History Book giving details about George Marlin McWhirter stated that his father, William, was born in South Carolina and that his family came to America in the latter part of the 17th century.' . . .'Moses and his family lived in Cecil Co MD and Chester/Lancaster Co PA prior to 1750. He obtained a land grant in Colorain Township, Lancaster Co PA between 1750 and 1752. This land grant was located on Octoraro Creek. . .No records have been located to prove Moses married a Marlin, but PA records show a kinship to the Marlins and the name Marlin apears in the given names of McWhorter/McWhirter childrenr of later generations including William's son, George Marlin McWhirter. . .Lancaster Co PA history records show that Moses and his son, Henry, fought in the French and Indian War which began in 1754. They served in a company of militia formed in Colorain Township. Moses died during the war and may have died as a result of this service. No records have been found since 1756, nor have any records been found to show what happened to his wife or daughters. The history of Lancaster shows Moses to be a farmer.' Moses McWhorter of Lancaster co., PA (cir1700-cir1756) Moses McWhorter [db#3677] was born probably in Ireland around 1700. He is said to have obtained a land grant located on Octoraro Creek in Colerain township, Lancaster County, PA between 1750 and 1752. The most well known source of information on this family [see reference #1] states that 'Moses and his son Henry fought in the French and Indian War which began in 1754. They served in a company of militia formed in Colerain Township. Moses died during the war and may have died as a result of this service. No records of him have been found after 1756'. The name of his wife is not known with any certainty, but noted McWhorter researcher, Davis L. McWhorter [db#6234] has suggested that her last name may have been MARLIN. The name appears in the family for several generations and a Margery Marlin of Chester co., PA in her will dated and probated in 1769 left a bequest to Elizabeth Ferrier [db#3779] the wife of William McWhorter [db#3768], son of Moses. Whether or not all of the children presently assigned to Moses are indeed his is still not certain. Although Anna Harman Bowman [see reference #1] concludes they are, Davis L. McWhorter as well as Frances Small and Mary Starnes [see reference #2] are less emphatic. In Davis' words 'He appears to have had these children: Henry, George,William Aaron 1st, Moses 2nd, James and three daughters'. It also appears almost certain that there existed a familial relationship between the family of Moses and that of David McWhorter [db#118] who removed first from Lancaster co., PA to Rutherford co., NC and later, after the Revolutionary War, to western South Carolina. [See McWh*rter Genealogy Newsletter, Vol. 1, Issue 3, Summer 1997, p. 5-10] Two of the grandchildren of Henry McWhorter [db#3678], son of Moses, married children of David. If past researchers are correct Moses had at least nine children, six sons and three daughters. These children resulted in at least twenty-four grandchildren, fourteen of them grandsons to carry on the surname. The descendants of Moses comprise the largest family in the McWh*rter Database with over 3000 persons connected therein including some 1885 direct descendants of Moses.
