Philburd Wright is included in the biography of Amos Wright and Elizabeth Lowe; family resided in Powell's Valley Virginia for a few years, prior to moving to Wayne Co KY where Elizabeth (Lowe) WRIGHT died at age 41; Amos and 2nd wife Margaret moved to Clark's Grant in Indiana Territory in 1807, and in 1809 settled just east of Beck's Mills in what became Washington County Indiana. Amos Sr's brother Philbert and eldest son John and families joined Amos in settling this region of Indiana about 1808-09. During the War of 1812, fear of Indian raids caused the Wright families to temporarily live within Fort Hill (which they built with other nearby families), where Rev. John Wright's eldest daughter, Lavina was born in 1813.      Rev Richard Wright was born on 15 June 1783 at Randolph County, North Carolina.2 He was blacksmith, farmer, minister.2 Jesse, James and Richard was probably a free white male, under 16 years old, in Benjamin Wright's household on the 1790 Census at Randolph County, North Carolina; Benjamin Wright 1 male over 16 3 males under 16, 6 females total 10.3 Rev Richard Wright lived; NC, IN (see notes.)2 He married Elizabeth Hughes at North Carolina on 1 November 1800.1 Rev Richard Wright , 93 - 'They moved to Clark Co, IN in 1807; to Washington County for two years, then to Monroe Co. Then to Smith Twp, Green Co. in 1826. Among the first weddings in that township (Smith) was that of their daughter Celia Wright to Samuel Wilks. Wright Township was named for Richard Wright. Petition for Wright Township was made in 1838. Other pioneers in Wright twp, besides Rev. Richard Wright included Peter Wright, William Wright, Isom Farris. The first school in the twp was taught about 1823 or 1824 by one of the Wright -- some think, by a man named Poe. Richard Wright enlisted in the War of 1812 and served the entire time. He was slightly wounded while working at Fort Harrison. Richard Wright settled on a farm and built a blacksmith shop. This was a Lone Tree Prairie in Smith Twp. Wright sold this to Richard Lambert. Old Uncle Richard Wright was Justice of Peace, he was also Justice of Peace in Monroe Co, IN. He married in Monroe Co West Lee Wright to nancy Wright, Sept 29, 1824, Susan Wright to James Nickels Jan. 19, 1825, William S. Wright to Marguaret Hite Feb 28 1825, P. Wright to Nancy Williams April 26, 1825, Nathonel Bell to Celia Wright April 26, 1825, Elias ARthur to Sarah WRight April 18, 1825, Abslom Morgan to Elizabeth May July 2, 1925 [sic], Solomon Morgan to Lydia Goodwin Oct 1825, Eligah Wright to Elizabeth Conder April 16, 1826, David Wright to Caroline Kutch Feb 1, (Sept 14, 1827 DAR), Elizabeth King to Thomas Bailey March 14, 1827, Jamima Morgan to Lewis Ritter May 28, 1827, and many others. Copied from Monroe Co. records. Richard was a good citizen. He died from a starnge accidental gun shot while working in his blacksmith shop. Mr. Hornbaker of Bloomington, a great grandson of the above Rev. Richard Wright, told of Richard making his son Jerry a gun. It got choked with a lode fast, so he pluged up the gun and thought he would boil it to get the powder wet so he could work with it. He put it to his ear to see if it was boiling, and it went off and killed him. Mr. Hornbaker also said he had been told by his mother that Rev. Richard Wright often went to preach away from home. Before he left he assigned taskts to each child, and if they had not done the work when he returned, they were sevely punishd by the common method of that time, 'whipping.' Monroe Co record, Richard entered land in Indian Creek Twp, Monroe Co, IN Sec 23 W, 1/2 SE 80 A on Nov 7, 1818. in 1807 at Indiana.4 He witnessed Elizabeth Hughes's death at Greene County, Indiana, in 1833.1 Rev Richard Wright married Judith Gowan on 22 May 1834 at Greene County, Indiana.5 Rev Richard Wright died in November 1843 at Greene County, Indiana, at age 60; Old Uncle Richard Wright was a Justice of the Peace and a good citizen in his neighborhood, and passed from this world to the next by a very strange accidental gunshot through his head while he was well and hearty, and was at work in his blacksmith shop. Harden Walker, his step-son, had been out hunting, and had shot a squirrel, and in reloading his gun the gun got choked, and the boy came to the shop to get his old step-father to fix the gun, or to get the bullet down. After trying many ways to move the bullet down, the old man took the gun barrel out of the stock, unbreeched her, poured water in the gun barrel, and laid the barrel across the fire, and while it was heating, so as to make the water fry, old Uncle Richard put down his ear to the gun, where he had taken out the breech pin, the gun went off, the bullet entering the old man's ear, and killing him instantly, in the presence of several persons. We will give our opinion of that sad accident: When the boy shot at the squirrel, the gun flashed, or did not fire, and left the bullet in the gun barrel, up a foot or two from the breech, and when the boy poured down the powder, it lodged on the first bullet, and then he put down the other bullet on top of the powder, thus leaving two bullets in the gun, and a charge of powder between the bullets.Information found at http://www.millersofwas hingtoncounty.org/Greene/Greene-Ch22.html.1

Richard Wright Jr. was occup1 Primitive Baptist Preacher.1 105 - Richard Wright Jr was a Baptist minister and a rather unusual man for his time. We find many, many ministers in his descendants. He did not sign his will but rather made his mark. He did, however, sign his name as a witness to his father's will many years before. This testifies that he must have been able to read and write.2 He was born on 4 July 1757 at Halifax County, Virginia.1,3 He was Rev War Soldier, #965; Pvt NC militia.4,2 He married Nancy Morgan, daughter of James Morgan Sr and Mary Mollie Davis, in 1780 at Rowan County, North Carolina.1 Richard Wright Jr. Private Rowan County Militia, Rev War. Shortly after the birth of her last daughter Susannah.6,3 He married Caroline Cary Kittrell at North Carolina say 1800.2,3 Richard Wright Jr. lived at Indiana; Richard Wright descendants says that Richard Jr. "moved to Indiana." When? Did he then move back to North Carolina?1 He made a will at Davidson County, North Carolina, on 12 May 1833.2 He died in June 1833 at Davidson County, North Carolina, at age 75; Richard Wright Jr., son of Richard Wright Sr. and wife Ann, was born in what is now considered to be Halifax County, Virginia on 4 Jun 1757. [Information is based on fact that his parents were in southwestern Virginia during that time and substantiated by a land deed found for Richard, Sr.]

Richard Wright, Jr. died in Davison Co., N. C. in 1833. He is buried in an old cemetery where we believe his father also lies (about two miles from the Silver Valley Crossroads-on U.S. highway 64-and about ten miles east of Lexington, N. C. This cemetery was at one time on the Wright family farm.

NOTE: the headstones to the right are a misrepresentation of facts. THERE ARE NO HEADSTONES EVIDENT HERE IN THE CEMETERY FOR ANY WRIGHT FAMILY MEMBER. The area where the cemetery is supposed to be is now on private land and is part of a cow pasture

Richard Wright Jr. was a private in Rowan Co., NC and fought at the Battle of Guilford County Court House, in the War for Independence. General Nathaniel Green was the commander of the American forces. According to a daughter, Richard was a Primitive Baptist minister. Many ministers and Justices of the Peace are found in his numerous descendants.

Richard signed his will [and other legal documents] with a slightly backward slanted ‘R' that is is considered his 'mark'. This appears to be a family trait, possibly indicating that he may have been left-handed. Through other legal documents bearing his signatures, it's been well established that he could read and write.

Richard was first married in 1780 to Nancy Morgan, b. 1750. No record of her death has been fully established; however, it's believed that she died abt 1798 - shortly after the birth of the last daughter, Susannah. Nancy Morgan Wright was a sister to Martha and Barbara Morgan [they married Wright brothers] whose parents were James and Mary Morgan..1,3
He was buried at Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina; cem on US Hiway 64 abt 10 miles e of Lexington.2,3 He and Ruth Gallimor Acc to Mrs. Ruth Gallimore's obit, each wife had 12 ch, 6 boys and 6 girls, and each had a set of twins. In 1911 at time of Mrs. Gallimore's death, none of the other ch were living. Obit describes Mrs. Gallimore's father as Primitive Baptist Minister, a prom and well to do man in his day. in 1911 at North Carolina.2
