Ben was raised inthe country, and attended a one-room schoolhouse called "Jump-Off," located in Pulaski Co about a mile frm his home and across Mill Creek. The school got its name from the fact that there was only one bathroom, an "outhouse," which was reserved for the girls. The boys had to "jump-off" the ridge behind the schoolhouse, andhide in the bushes.
At about age five or six, Ben accompanied his father to get limestone from what is now called Crusher Hill, outisde of Ullin, where it had beenmined since the early 1840's. At that time, several kilns were in operation, and African-American men were hired to clean them. Ben remembered looking down in one of the kilns and seeing the men with faces covered with lime and ashes, and recalled that he thought they must have been in hell.
When about fifteen, Ben and Ernest Mowery skipped Sunday School one morning to visit an old Cherokee Indian who lived in the area, Chief Redcloud, who at one time had traveled with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The chief was a palm reader, and read those of Ben and Ernest. He told Ben that he would live a long life, marry a rich woman, and become a famous musician. He did live a long life.3 He died on 30 September 1984 at Ullin, Pulaski County, Illinois, at age 93.4
