A family tradition says that a deserter from the Union Army was hidden in the barn there, and fed by the family during the Civil War, a serious and punishable offense had they been caught. Although the story does not reveal the name of the soldier, it could have been Catherine's nephew, Eli Meisenheimer, who deserted in 1863 from the 109th Regiment."8 He Misenheimer manuscript says that [Eli?] died 'when Jasper was a small child.' I (Gary) am assuming that Mary E. Meisenheimer, b. 15 Jan 1845, is the 'Marian' b. 1843 according to the 1850 census-- but could be two different people. I don't know from what source I got that Mary E. was the daughter of Eli Meisenheimer and May. has marriage as 1832, but I have changed to 1838 based on children's birth dates and the fact that Eli would have been only 13 years old when married if 1832 correct! In 1869.7 As of June 1869, Eli Alfred Meisenheimer Sr was also known as Eli Misenhimer.5 He died in June 1869 at Misenheimer, Union County, Illinois, at age 36; Eli Misenhimer
