McCardle 'The family of Eliza McCardle, wife of President Andrew Johnson, lived very close to the Browns and Starnes. David McCardle was a member of this family and probably related to Eliza McCardle. The name, McCardle, was later changed to McCarty', Jacob, p. 71.1 He died between 1814 and 1880 at Tennessee.2

Killed in the War of 1812, shortly after marriage.2 Rebecca Ball married Daniel Salts, son of Henry Salts and Mary Brown, on 12 October 1817 at Washington County, Tennessee.1 Her married name was McCardle.1 Her married name was Salts.1 Rebecca Ball 'Records of Wash County, TN indicate that Rebecca was the widow of Jacob McCardle who was killed in the war of 1812 (a brother to Eliza McCardle, wife of President Andrew Johnson).', Jacob, p. 126.1 She was a witness Thomas must have been quite a religious man. In his will, after other bequeaths were taken care of, the remaining money was left to purchase Bibles and other religious material to be distributed to his grandchildren.389

He is the fifthe of five sons and three daughters born of John and Nancy (Combs) McCrery, who were born in Ireland and Botetourt County, VA, respectively. John McCrery was a carpenter by trade. About 1831 emigrated to Montomgery County, IN, where he entered and improved about 550 acres, and on which he lived till his death in 1839. He was about fifty years old, and a son of James McCrery, of Ireland, who immigrated to the United States about 1795, and immediately settled in Botetourt County, VA, on a farm, and remained during the rest of his life. Our subject's mother died about 1840, at the age of forty-two years. Her parents were born and reared in Germany, immigragted to the United States and settled on a farm in Virginia. After the death of his parents Jorhn R. went to live with his uncles in Monroe County, KY; remained three years, when he was sent to Simpson County, where he attended the common schools for six months. He received a plain English education, and married, July 3,1842, at the age of 18 years, Nancy De White [sic], of Simpson County, KY, a daughter of William and Nancy (McQuorter) De White, of Scotch descent, natives of Virginia, and who first immigrated to Macon County, TN, then ce to Simpson County, KY. William De White was a soldier of 1812; was in the battle of New Orleans. By occupation he was a farmer and brick-mason. Mr. and Mrs. McC. had three children Nancy H. (deceased), Sarah E. Stanley and John McCrery. Mrs. McC died in August, 1854, aged thirty-six, a member of the Christian Church. Mr. McCrery married his second wife, Mary E. Saunders, of Logan County,KY, in May 1857. She was a daughter of James and Lucy Mimms Saunders, natives of Goochland County, VA. Four children were born to this union James Thomas (deceased), Charles A. (deceased), Eugene J. and Rob Lee (deceased). Mr. McC. and wife are members of the Baptist Church. After his marriage he moved ten times in nine years, and located, where he now resides, five miles east of Franklin, in 1855, on 107 acres, which he has improved with comfortable buildings; has also furnished his children with good homes. Mr. McC. started in life without capital, but has been very successful in all his business transactions. He has always taken an interest in charitable and benevolent institutions, and will not spare any means to enhance the interests of his community. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. In politics is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for James K. Polk.
