neighbor Jacob Lingle 84.5 Jacob J. Lingle Sr died on 18 February 1852 at Union County, Illinois, at age 85.1 He was buried at Casper Cemetery, Anna, Union County, Illinois.1 He Jacob Lingle was the son of Lorentz and Eva Catherina Lingle and descended from Johanne Jacob Lingle and his wife Paulus, Germans, who came from Rotterdam, Holland, arriving in Philadelphia 26 Sep 1737. Jacob Lingle was one of the Revolutionary Patriots. He served during the latter years of the struggle for Independence in the North Carolina volunteers. He was in the battles of King's Mountain and Eutaw Springs, and several of minor note. At the battle of Eutaw, he was in the ranks a part of the time without a gun. So poorly were the troops of his division armed that only one gun for two men could be furnished, and of course he had to wait until chance enabled him to arm with the gun of a dead comrade, or get one from some unlucky or cowardly foeman. In 1803 Jacob and his wyoung wife, Mary, and several small children in company with two other families left Cabrrus County, NC went down the Ohio River in Batteaus to Butler County, OH and thence to Posey County, IN and on the Johnson (now Union) County, IL about 1807. IN Union County Jacob and Mary settled in a dense forest and cleared a place for their home about three miles north of Jonesboro and two miles south of Cobden where they resided until their deaths. Their son, Paul, and his wife, Rachel (Cruse) Lingle, lived on the farm after their deaths. The country in Illinois in 1807 abounded in wild game -- the deer, bear, panther and wildcat, to say nothing of turkeys, in any quantity. Jacob Lingle, though a hard-working farmer who made use of his time, was fond of his gun and well knew how to use it to the destruction of these unprofitable denizens of the forest, which ofen made sad havoc upon his monor by pouncing upon his pigs, calves and young colts. He found the deer so plentiful that one fall he killed sixteen and not one was killed a grater distance from his house than half a mile. IN fact, the forest was the source from which the early settlers drew their rations of meat for a time. Jacob LIngle was a highly esteemed citizen, opened a large farm and raised a large family. He was a regular communicant of the church for many years. NO better man or kinder citizen ever lived in Union County than Jacob Lingle. His sons and daughters are among the best of our citizens (From an 1870 newspaper article repriinted in the Saga of Southern Illinois, Spring 1984). Three other Lingle children may belong to this family, but they were not listed in the probate of Jacob J. Lingle's will. They are Anna Mary, born July 15, 1798, in Rowan County, NC; Joseph, born March 19, 1805 in Rowan County, NC, and Tebetha who married John Hall, October 19, 1834.
