Samuel Greeley was also known as Samuel Greele.3 Samuel Greeley was also known as Capt Samuel Greeley.2 He was born on 29 September 1752 at Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.2,3,1 He married Olive Read at Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, on 8 November 1779.2,1 Samuel Greeley lived; NH.2 Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census at Wilton, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Samuel Greeley Jr. 1 male over 16; 4 under 16; 3 females
4 under 16 could be Samuel (7), Augustus (3), William (just born) and perhaps one more unknown; 3 females would include wife Olive and daughters Nancy and an unnamed one..4 He died on 25 September 1798 at Wilton, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, at age 45.2,1 He prob the Samuel Jr in NH State Census 1776, Greele, Samuel, Jr. Hudson Hillsboro, (signer), NH State Papers, Vl XXX, p. 71 (same page as Samuel Sr.) Greeley Genealogy, p. 147 - 'He and his father lived on and occupied the same farm in Wilton. He was a very prominent and influential man in the town. He signed the Association test June 3, 1776. He built the first gristmill in Wilton on the same place whre one stood in 1839 The muster roll of the company who turned out as volunteers from Nottingham West at the time of the Battle of Lexington has the names of Samuel Greeley as captain and Joseph Greeley, private. In Wilton he was always called Captain Samuel and his s father Major Samuel. In 1796 a cavalry company was formed at New Ipswich, NH and he was one of the commanders. At a celebration in Wilton, in answer to the toast, 'The Clergy of Wilton,' Rev. N Whitman said - 'This day is the anniversary of an event which forty one years ago filled this town with sudden and deep mourning. As Capt Samuel Greeley was on his way to attend town meeting, a decayed tree by the roadside struck by a poweful gust of wind, fell an precipitated him from his horse to the ground, a corpse. By this providence his family and the whole community were called to mourn the loss of one who was highly respected and greatly beloved. Captain Greeley was a man of public spirit. On the memorable spot where he fell there now stands a beautiful marble monument. It is a monument of filial piety and parental worth. I offer the following sentimnt - The Greeley monument - it eloquently proclaims the glory of Wilton - the devotion of the parents to the best welfare of their children, and the gratitude of the children to venerable and beloved parents.' His tombstone is in the old graveyard at Wilton, and reads
"In
memory of Capt
Samuel Greele
who was suddenly killed
by the fall of a tree on
the 25th of Sept 1798 in
the 46th year of his age
Suddenly and awful was the stroke
The thread of life asunder broke
Think reader can thy heart endure
A summons to a bar so pure.2,5
