Zaccheus Gould1

M, b. October 1589, d. 30 March 1668
FatherRichard Gould1 b. c 1553, d. 25 May 1597
MotherMary Colder1 b. c 1555, d. 1589
Zaccheus Gould was born in October 1589 at Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England.2 He married Phoebe Deacon, daughter of Thomas Deacon and Martha Field, circa 1618 at Hertfordshire, England.1 Zaccheus Gould lived; England, MA.1 He was a witness 'Priscilla, Wife of John Putnam,' by Read H. Putnam, NEHGR, July, 1965, pgs. 174-175. For many years those interested in the distinguished and widely spread family of Putnam, descended from John Putnam, who came from Aston Abbots co., Bucks., England, to Salem, Mass., in the fourth decade of the seventeenth century, have sought in vain for the maiden name of his wife Priscilla, the mother of his children. It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, a reasonable assumption since Zacceus Gould, who is known to have married Phebe Deacon, the eldest daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, refers to the emigrant's son, John Putnam the younger, as 'my Cousin'-- a term which at this period usually implied a nephew--when he made him his attorney on 30 Sept 1658(1). The difficulty has been to determine in what way the term 'Cousin' applied in this case. Over the past several years Mr. A. Vere Woodman, F.S.A., noted antiquarian and descendant of the Putnams of Wing. co. Bucks., England, hs made an exhaustive search in the Hemel Hempstead parish register which has failed to reveal the baptism of Priscilla Deacon(2). In the composition of this paper, the author has drawn heavily upon the report of Mr. Woodman and the writings of G. Andrews Moriarty, F.S.A., who is descended from all three of John Putnam's sons and without whose assistance this paper would be impossible. Mr. Woodman informs me there is no record of the baptsm of Priscilla among the children of a contemporary Thomas Deacon, no doubt a distanc kinsman of some degree who was living in Ivinghoe toward the end of the sixteenth century(3). After this intensive study of the Deacon family failed to reveal the solution to the problem Mr. Woodman then turned to the Gould family(4) and discovered that the name Priscilla, although not used by the Deacon family, was very much in evidence among the Goulds, a family long settled in Bovington midway between Hemel Hempstead and Chesham. The will of John Gould of Bovington, dated and proved in 1602(5), mentions among other children his daughters Rebecca(6) and Priscilla(7). His eldest son, Nathan Gould of Tring , whose will was dated and proved in 1611/12(8) mentions his brother Jeremy's daughters Sara and Priscilla, both under eighteen years of age, and his sister Priscilla Grover's two children, John and Priscilla. He makes his cousin Jeremy Gould an overseer. This cousin was probably identical with Jeremy, son of Richard Gould of Bovington, deceased, who married in Chesham, 27 Nov 1604, Priscilla, daughter of William and Margaret Grover of Codmore. Priscilla Grover was baptized in Chesham 3 June 1582. The baptism of a son Henry Gould, 12 July 1631, son of Jeremy and Priscilla Gould, is recorded in Aston Abbots, where Jeremy may have been dwelling for a time with, or near, John Putnam. These facts suggest that Richard Gould of Bovington may have had a daughter or daughters in addition to the sons mentioned in the known works of this family. But since the early register of Bovington has disappeared and Richard Gould's will has not been found this was a matter of conjecture until the recent discovery of the following case concerning the administration of Richard Gould's estate in the records of the Archdeaconry of Huntingdon(9). Court held in Baldok Parish church 25th May 1597. The Lords official against Elizabeth Goulde widow of Bovingdon, administratix of the goods of Richard Goulde of the same deceased in a matter of the account. The citation is issued on which day appeared Wiliam the apparitor and exhibited the aforesaid citation and took his oath that he cited the same Elizabeth on the 5th May 1597 to appear on this day to answer the said citation. Then, proclamation having been made for the said Elizabeth, Richard Easte Notary Public appeared and exibited[sic] his proxy in writing for the said Elizabeth and took his oath. At whose petition the Lord [Judge] decreeed that Sara (10) and Priscilla Gould of Bovington, the natural and lawful daughters of the deceased in particular be cited to be at the next court and that notice be given to all others in general having, or pretending to have, a right, title, or interest in the goods of the same deceased To be in the parish church at Bovingdon to see the account of the said Elizabeth exhibited and to object if they think fit. And the Lord appointed the said Easte to render an account of the administration of the aforesaid goods at the next court. The matter was finally settled at the court held in the parish church of Berkhamstead St. Peter, 1 July 1597, when the account was presented. No one objected so a letter of acquittance called 'a quietus' was issued under the seal of the Lord [Judge]. In view of the above discovery ther can be no doubt that Priscilla, wife of John Putnam, was the daughter of Richard Gould of Bovingdon, and sister of Zaccheus. In this way her son John was a blood 'cousin', that is nephew, of Zaccheus Gould, through his mother rather than as nephew of Zaccheus' wife as had been thought heretofore. Notes 1 Essex Quarterly Cout files, Essex Institute, 1912, vol. 6, p. 126. See also Benjamin Apthorp Gould, The Family of Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield, 1895, p. 34. 2. Thomas Deacon married in Hemel Hempstead, 15 June 1596, Martha Field. Their daughter Phoebe, wife of Zacceus Gould, was baptized there 3 April 1597. 3. Thomas Deacon of Ivanghoe married there, 11 Feb. 1578/79, Elizabeth Young. 4. The ancestry of Richard Gould has long been known. The late Benjamin Apthorp Gould published a summary of it, based on the research of Horatio Gates Somerby, in the Esex Institute Historical Collectons, vol. 11, p. 115-221, July-October 1871 (reprinted as a pamphlet, 1872). This formed the basis of his more extensive genealogy, The Family of Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield, 1895, which is still the standard history of the family. He printed in it abstracts of many of the Gould wills found in English repositories. In the light of Mr. Woodman's research, it is obvious that the record of Richard Gould's children (p. 18, under no. 49--Mr. Gould's book) should be amended to read i. Richard, b. about 1578;m. 16 May 1625 Mary Golden. ii. Jeremy, b. about 1581; m. 25 Nov. 1604 Priscilla Grover; iii. Sara, b. about 1583; iv. Priscilla, b. about 1585; m. in 1611 John Putnam. v. John, b. about 1587; m. Judith -----. vi. Zaccheus, b. about 1589, m. Phoebe Deacon. In addition, Mr. Woodman states, in a letter addressed to Mr. Moriarty, dated 7 Oct. 1964, that he has found in the Bishop's transcript of the parish register of Great Misendon, the baptisms of two children of Zaccheus Gould Priscilla, 7 Sep 1628 and John 29 Jun 1635 5.
