His scapegrace son Joshua, aged twenty-four, had already been convicted of window-breaking and had been to Rhode Island where he continued his disobedience among the Quakers. He was a devotee of horse coursing and racing and had followed 'idle and expensive courses at Groton, Concord, etc.' He failed to attend church meetings when in Chelmsford. It was his nocturnal escpades, however, which brought him before the court and the church. He acknowledged: 'that three nights, after bedtime, he went into Mr. Fiskes (the ministers) Dwelling house at Chelmsford, at an open window by a ladder that he brought with him; the said window opening into a chamber, where was the lodging place of Grissell Juell servant to Mr. Fiske' Fiske's notebook adds the information that Joshua and Grizel, who was ony fifteen, spent whole nights together, though on one occasion John Waldo was also present. Fiske was particularly scandalized that Joshua 'boasted of his exploits to the younger ones to corrupt them and make them like himself in shameless wickedness.' He had obviously attracted to himself a group of acolytes unhealthily impressed with his sexual adventures. Perhaps Waldo was taken along in order to validate his account.
