Allen Wakefield Dewitt was born in 1820 at Russellville, Monroe County, Kentucky; Tulare Reg Vl 1, No 266.2 He was Elder-Minister, Christian Church.1 Allen was probably a free white male, age 5 and under 10, in William French DeWitt's household, on the 1830 Census at Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky; William DeWitt

DeWitt came to CA in 1859 in 1859 at Red Bluff, Tehama County, California.5 Allen Wakefield Dewitt was census 1880 on 9 June 1880 at Tulare Township, Tulare County, California; 19, 19 Dewitt, A. Last evening a dispatch arrived from Fresno stating that elder A.W. Dewitt had died at Big Sandy east of Auberry Valley in that county, at 8 oclock that morning. It was a sad surprise to the many friends of the deceased in this city. From Mark DeWitt, who had been with him, and who returned to this city with the remains this morning, we learn that on Sunday last deceased was feeling quite well, and that on that day he preached two sermons and baptized three persons. Mark says he never knew his father's voice to be so clear and distinct as in the delivery of his last sermon. It was his intention to start for Fresno on his way home the next day, but on Sunday evening he was taken ill and got much worse by Monday. ON Tuesday Dr. Pace of this city was sent for but did not arrive until after Mr. DeWitt's death. Elder DeWitt was known widely throughout this valley. There is hardly a city or hamlet in Tulare and Fresno Counties, in the mountains or on the plain, whose people, old and young, did not know the kindly face of the old gentlemen who had gone his simple, unobtrusive way among them. His life work has been preaching and always he has gone out into the smaller communities where a regular pastor could not be maintained. He was born in KY in 1820 and began preaching in 1846. IN 1853 he moved to IL and in 1859 came to CA, settling in the upper Sacramento Valley. He came from Colusa to Tulare in 1877 and his labors here are familiar to all. His estimable wife, with whom he had walked life's journey for 54 years, died near this city on the 4th of last July. 'Grandpa' DeWitt was loved by all. His daily conduct was the service of his Master and his was as nearly the perfect Christian life as mortal can reach. Deceased leaves 4 children, namely, Mrs. J. B. Zumwalt, S. H., W.M., and E. DeWitt. Mrs. Zumwalt will arrive from Irvington tonight. The remains will be laid to rest tomorrow, services being held at the Christian church at 10 am. in 1888.1 He appeared on the census of 16 October 1890 at Enterprise, Tulare County, California; DeWitt, Allen Wakefield, age 70, Kentucky, Enterprise, p. 23, Oct 16.7 He appeared on the census of 26 September 1892 at Tulare, Tulare County, California; Great Register of Tulare County, #1681 (p. 22), age 72, height 5 ft 9 1/2 in, light complexion, hazel eyes, grey hair, right hand crippled, native of KY, resident of Tulare, PO address Tulare, date of registration Sep 26, 1892.1 He was buried at Tulare, Tulare County, California; Tulare Cemetery.1 He was Christian Church.1 He died on 31 May 1897 at Big Sandy, Fresno County, California; "AW died the next year, 31 May 1897, while visiting in Big Sandy, Fresno County, CA."
