He took part in the battles of Vicksburg, Yazoo City, Fort Spanish, and was present at the surrender of Vicksburg. Wounded or ill, he was in the ospital at LaGrange, TN, for a short time in 1863. In 1868 he followed his father to Arkansas, where he farmed for a time, then opened a store in Piggott in 1879, becoming Postmaster in 1883. He was Quartermaster of the local post of the GAR.' -- (Jacob), p. 25. between 15 August 1862 and 14 July 1865 at Illinois.5 He was the child of Martin Brown and Samuel Brown and immigrated with them in 1868 to at Clay County, Arkansas; Two brothers, Samuel (1821-1901) and Martin Brown (1816-1905), sons of John and Elizabeth (Hunsaker) Brown, of Union County, Ill. came by covered wagons to Clay County, Ark. by 1868, three years after the Civil War. They came to try their fortunes in a new primitive state. The land had to be cleared and log houses built in the Pollard area. Food had to be raised but there was plenty of fishing and hunting for both fun and livelihood.6 He married Mariah Jane Pollard at Greene County, Arkansas, on 28 December 1868.7 Andrew Jackson Brown lived; IL, AR.1 He witnessed Mariah Jane Pollard's death at Piggott, Clay County, Arkansas, on 7 February 1899.7 Andrew Jackson Brown married Nancy Ellen Bruce on 18 September 1899 at Arkansas.8 Andrew died on 14 September 1923 at Piggott, Clay County, Arkansas, at age 80.2,8 He was buried on 15 September 1925 at New Hope Cemetery, Pollard, Clay County, Arkansas.1,9
