Onthe 20th of Oct at Big Springs School House Rev A Cressey preached tghe funeral sermon for Mr. James Rolfe, and afterward laid away the body in the cemetery there. A large gathering of friends attended the services, although the day was inclement. James Rolfe was born on the 21st of September 1798 in Jersey City, state of New Jersey. He moved to the state of New york when he was three years old, and settled in Cayuga County, Town of Locke, where he lived till he was 19 years of age. He went to Green County [sic] town of Elba, where he lived with his sister and her husband. While living here he was convinced of his need of salvation and as such he pledged himself to be a servant of God. He united with the M.E. Church and remained a member till the time of his death. At the age of 20 he married Phoebe Ensign, the daughter of a local preacher with whom he lived for about 30 [sic] years. He afterward married Maria Lane, who after 3 years was left a widower. Sometime afterward he married Amy Truesdale with whom he lived about 10 years. He had 12 children in all -- 6 boys and 6 girls, of whom now half of them are now living. His parents were members of the Church of England. He served the M.E. Church during a large portion of his entire life as close leader.
Subsequently he moved to the state of Michigan, where he lived nearly 20 years, engaging most of his time in blacksmithing. In 1855 he moved to Minnesota and settled near Big Springs, where he spent the remaining part of his life. He lived with his son E. M. Rolfe 25 years previous to his death. He died on Sunday October 18 1885 at 7:30 am. Like a shock of corn, ready for the Master's granary. He had been a member for about 63 years. He died as he had desired to do, without much suffering and without a struggle. "Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like unto Him.".1

Moses Rolfe1

M, b. 3 October 1778, d. 1860
FatherJonathan Rolfe1 b. 1754, d. 13 Feb 1830
MotherPatience Coon1 b. c 1756, d. bt 1788 - 1789
The Biographical Album of Otoe & Cass Counties Nebraska published 1889 by Chapman Brothers has an entry for Deforest P. Rolfe. It includes the following:
“His father, Joseph Rolfe, was a native of Monmouth County, N. J., born May 12, 1800, and was a son of Moses Rolfe, who was born in Virginia, and a descendant of an old English family. The grandfather of our subject removed to Monmonth, N. J., and later to Ovid, Seneca Co., N. Y., and was one of the early settlers of the county. He subsequently moved from there to Steuben County, where he spent the remainder of his life.”
(Note from Scott: This story matches up with other data sources except for the Virginia reference. That reference may or may not be true. These county-based biographical sketch books were common in the 1880s and 1890s and were generally accurate, but not always 100% accurate.)2 Moses Rolfe was born on 3 October 1778 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.1 He was born in 1783 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.3 He was born in 1792 at Middlesex County, New Jersey; 1850 census has 1792 NY.1,4 He married Mary Coon say 1799 at New Jersey.2 They emigrated, in 1805. Point of origin: an unknown place .5 Moses was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census at Romulus, Seneca County, New York, 1810 US Census for town of Romulus, Seneca County New York shows:
Moss Rolfe household with 1 male 26-44 [Moses 32]
2 males 0-9 [Joseph 9, Moses just born?]
1 female 26-44 [Mary Coon]
2 females 10-15 [?] ,
1 female 0-9 [Patience]
About 10 doors down is the household of Jonathan Rolfe with a male 45 plus...6 He Moses served in the NY militia during the War of 1812. The service records obtained from the New York Archives are faint and hard to read. Looks like he served for four months at Fort Niagara starting on Nov 15, 1812. Then served at Fort George for three months starting on Sept 9, 1813. (Fort George was a British fort on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. The Americans captured the fort and controled it for part of the war.) Moses served under Captain John Whitney and Colonel Henry Bloom and initially enlisted at Romulus NY. (You can see Moses living in Romulus in the 1810 US Census.) Both service records show him being born in 1778. After the war he was awarded 120 acres and $62.75 for the first term and 40 acres and $42 for the second term.3 Moses was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census at Jersey, Steuben County, New York. 1820 United States Federal Census

Patience Rolfe1

F, b. 13 August 1793, d. between 1854 and 1860
FatherJonathan Rolfe1 b. 1754, d. 13 Feb 1830
MotherElsie Coon1 b. c 1760, d. 29 May 1848
Patience Rolfe was also known as Patience Wilcox Most Ancestry Trees do not have Ransom Coats marrying Patience Rolfe, b ut instead marrying Patience Wilcox.2 She and Patience Rolfe Some Details
I have seen family tree websites that confuse the two Patience Rolfes.
- Jonathan’s daughter Patience (named after his first wife) was born in 1793 as shown in the Rolfe family Bible. That clearly can not be “my Patience” - too old. My best guess is that this Patience married Ransom Coats - the 1850 US census for town of Bradford, Steuben County, NY lists her birth as 1793 in New Jersey, a perfect match in term of first name, current residence, year of birth and place of birth.
- Also the Ottawa County Bio on David Wood says his wife Patience died in 1848 versus the Rolutionary War Pension Apllication for Jonathan Rolfe says his daughter Patience was still alive in 1853.
- Moses is the only Rolfe living in the Bradford (FKA town of Jersey, Steuben County, NY) to be the right age to have a daughter born in 1806. All other Rolfe men were too young. More specifically Moses does show a daughter in the right age category in both the 1810 and 1820 US Censuses. So Moses named a daughter after his deceased mother, Patience Coon.
- In the 1820 US Census the households of Moses Rolfe and Samuel T. Wood are only a couple doors apart so David and Patience knew each other as neighbors.3 Patience Rolfe was born on 13 August 1793 at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.1 As of say 1817,her married name was Coats.2 She married Ransom Coats say 1817 at New York.2 Jonathan Rolfe mentioned Patience Rolfe in a will on 5 October 1826 at Bath, Steuben County, New York; The will of Jonathan Rolfe was found in the Bath NY courthouse. It was dated 5 Oct 1826 and named his sons Ephraim and Joseph as executors. His listed heirs were his wife Elsie, sons Joseph, Moses, Jonathan, and Ephraim, daughters Mercy and Patience; granddaughter Patience Tilton; and Polly (Rolfe) Tilton who was noted to be the wife of John Tilton. This last named heir was undoubtedly Mary (Polly) Rolfe.
Patience Tilton, noted as Jonathan's granddaughter, could have been the daughter of either Mary (Polly) Rolfe or Marriam Rolfe. Since she is of the 7th generation, she is also listed with that generation.1 She died between 1854 and 1860 at Steuben County, New York.1

Lydia Pearson1

F, b. 25 September 1732, d. between 1774 and 1822
Lydia Pearson was born on 25 September 1732 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.1 As of 25 December 1760,her married name was Rolfe.1 She married Benjamin Rolfe, son of John Rolfe and Judith Dole, on 25 December 1760 at Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.1 Soon after the close of the old French war, my grandfather, Benjamin Rolfe, came to Boscawen from Newbury, Mass and built his "bark cabin" in the primeval forests, on the highest swell of land in the township. His wife, Lydia Pierson Rolfe, accompanied him on horseback to the intervale in Fisherville, soon to be known as Penacook. On a single horse both rode, and carried the axe, the shave, the pod-auger, the gouge, the hoe, and several other tools, and certain domestic utensils. . .My grandmother returned alone on horseback, going through Chester to Newbury, and joined her family of five children; and my grandfather took his axe, his camp-kettle, and such other articles as he could carry on his back, sought out his future home in the lone, dense forests, four miles north-westerly of where we now stand, on what was afterwards called High Street, and was for a time the frontier settler in the town, as Daniel Webster's father was the frontier settler in the town of Salisbury. During the summer and fall he stayed alone, and heard no sound in his "clearing" save the birds and the wild beasts, his axe, and his own musical voice. His wife and children remained in Newbury.
Late in the fall of the year his wife came up for him alone on horseback, visited him in his cabin, and he returned with her to Newbury, where he worked in a ship-yard, being by trade a ship's carpenter. In the spring he returned to his cabin in the woods, his wife accompanying him on horseback, and returning again alone. In course of time he cleared away the forests, built himself a house and barn, the first frame house in the town, dug a well, sowed and planted his land, and made the wilderness smile. Thither he eventually moved his wife and five children, in the spring of 1772.2
